Yesterday I compared seven different recordings on YouTube of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No 27, op 90. It is one of only two sonatas Beethoven wrote that have two movements, and the first is typical of Beethoven: a restless, even conflict driven statement with a soothing, gentle melody that Schubert would copy to great effect in his sonata D784.

The point of interest is the stark difference in the playing if one compares Barenboim to Ivo Pogorelich, though to me Pogorelich takes liberties that ruin the flow of the music. Even if you don't like Beethove, born 250 years ago this week, it won't take too long for you to hear two such radically different interpretations of the same piece of music.

I've heard a lot about the young pianist Igor Levit and I was wondering about your opinion of him. I like the music of Busoni so here is a clip of Levit playing Busoni.

I have heard Levit on the radio, and he is one of many fine pianists we are blessed with these days. Of the younger group, I have seen a lot of Daniil Trifomov on YouTube and he is a very special player, as you can see from the link, I hope! I recently soldiered through parts of the film Hustlers, which for an unknown reason features the Etude in the link and more Chopin in the film. On the basis of recent revelations, it might be the case that Chopin was first attracted to the writer George Sand because she dressed as a boy. It is also alleged that he once told her that he could not compose after they had had sex, and that he probably preferred composing to sex for that reason. Or maybe she didn't have all the right 'equiment' to satisfy this egocentric, Jew-hating louche?

Busoni is an example of someone who was a powerhouse in his day -performer, composer, writer- whose music was much admired that is now mostly neglected. Years ago in London I saw a concert performance of his opera, Doktor Faust and the best one can say is that it is 'interesting'. and as with your clip, his piano transcriptions of other composer's works seems to be his enduring legacy. I have a collection of essays and articles in called The Essence of Music, which was first published in 1957, I think, and they are certainly interesting to read. In particular the essays on Beethoven, whom he called 'the first great democrat in music' -while he also makes pertinent remarks about where Beethovem fails in comparison to Bach and Mozart, so that there is no pseudo-religious worship of Ludwig, who like Chopin and Schubert had problems with women, or in Schubert's case 'the Peacocks of Benvenuti Cellini'...

Enjoy!

Hmmm...if anything it is Barenboim who, by staying close to the score is 'academic', where Pogorelich is just eccentric. Mitsuko Uchida in some of her recordings of the Schubert sonatas speeds up or slows down tempi, often stretching pauses as Pogorelich does in the first movement of the Beethoven, but she manages to pull it off, though in a recital I went to I think two years ago, her fiddling with tempi and pauses was too personal, like she was playing for herself, not to an audience, and I was relieved to leave the concert hall at the end, and quite disappointed with her as a musician.

On Palm Sunday, Bach's Mass in B Minor. Although I am listening to it on CD it is available on YouTube. Coming back to this recording after a few years and the experience of listening to the Bach-Stiftung based in St Gallen under the direction of Rudolf Lutz (their church Cantatas on YouTube are the best I ever heard) makes me realize how slow Harnoncourt now sounds. He manages the chamber sections better than the chorus, which is too large these days. Nevertheless, it has its moments, thanks to the genius of JSB.

Not so much special pleading, as desperate pleading. For over 100 years people in the streets of Italy were singing Verdi, and even if one discounts the songs of Schubert, Mahler, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov (and why would one do that?), there are plenty of pop singers who were and are far superior to Battisti, who on the evidence you provide, is an inferior version of either Georges Brassens or Jaques Brel. Italian pop is part of a continental Europen niche, not a universal one, hence Battisti's provincial status

I love IGGY's energy and his conviction in what he believes in - thats what makes good music real to me - you can tell the ones who are just shuffling through the motions --- cats that go in and record one band member at a time and never even see each other or hear the result till the album comes out - I dont care how much talent you have it becomes mechanical at a point and takes the life out of it.

I have been watching Cardiff Singer of the World on the BBC, and a Chinese soprano offered a charming rendition of an aria from Donizetti's opera Don Pasquale, which with L'Elisir d'Amore is one of his most engaging operas. Of the YouTube version, there is a splendid live one from Sumi Jo in the 1990s, but this one might be the best.

Of the Cardiff roster, a disappointing year, with the exception of Scottish mezzo Beth Taylor who has a ravishing voice, I hope she wins.

A famous Scottish song, given more of a heavier version here than, say, a folk duo like The Corries would, but what a voice! She is also in the Cardiff Singer of the World, and I think will win it.

Dvorak conducted the premiere of his 'New World' Symphony in Carnegie Hall in December 1893 and it has been a huge success since that evening. It is a perfectly formed symphony, with a divine melody in the Largo played on the English Horn, or Cor Anglais, that most plaintive of the Reed instruments. A fine performance from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, whose YouTube videos are mostly wonderful, as is the Alte Oper where they perform.

A splendid version of Strauss's Aridane auf Naxod from the Garsington festival, though there are some moments when the singers and the orchestra threaten to head off in different directions. Spot the singer who was on Britain's Got Talent, employed as an opera singer.

I don't know, musical taste is subjective, a song may speak to someone and another may not get it.
Probably why there are so many different genres and styles so there's something for everyone.

Rick Beato on the state of music and technology -it's not really my thing but his illustration of how technology deals with John Bonham's drums compared to the real thing is astonishing. It could be a depressing thing if AI were to replace real musicians and above all, spontaneity, though I think most people are happy plugging in to their music through the internet rather than other means -is it nostalgia alone that holds on to records, record players/sound systems, and dare one mention it -live music?

Interestingly, vinyl records have been making a comeback, so many people clearly do find today's technology unsatisfying. Recently my CD player stopped working, so I went to various electrical goods stores looking for a replacement. I was surprised to find that stand-alone CD players have almost disappeared, but there were several turntables in stock.

The paradox of technology seems to be that the easier it is to access stuff, the less we value it.

If you mean Sony Walkman players or similar, they can be purchased online as they don't seem to be sold in shops, though the independent CD/DVD/Vinyl shop in my town used to and not so long ago -but they also sell the decks to go with their vinyl. Shops here like Currys/PCWorld also sell stereo systems, some may even have a cassette player though I am not sure about that, and I do have an external DVD/CD drive which I use on my computer. I also have a radio/cd player in the kitchen though the quality of sound is not great -indeed, I think the record decks and super-expensive stylii now mean you get better sound out of them than in the past, though I think it also depends on the speakers you have. So yes the technology in all areas is better, yet people prefer online content, on average I expect. Where the danger lies, and this is what I think Rick was aiming at, is the source material -the people who choose to make original music, how, and then how it gets played. The dystopian future fear is that everything will be homogenized, that people's brains will follow suit, that Elon Musk will change his name to Tyrrell, and you won't know if your neighbour is human or android. And the sheep are electric.

I mean a CD player that plugs into an amplifier as part of a stereo system. I did manage to find one in an old-fashioned hi fi store, though I had to drive across town. I guess a few people can still make a living servicing niches that the big chains ignore.
