Dougie Maclean singing "Caledonia", the original and finest version of a song that has transcended its humble origins to become an alternative and imo far better Scots anthem than the truly awful "Flower of Scotland".

He sang it at the Stables in Milton Keynes last week and I wasn't the only one fighting the tears by the end. It says in a very gentle way all that needs to be said about exile and the yearning for a dear homeland.

We shared a dram afterwards - we started out in rival bands in the way back - and with a bit of luck I might be playing his festival in Perthshire next year which will be an honour and a treat.

I discovered yesterday that the reason David Bowie quit making records and doing concerts was that, in 2003 he had a massive heat attack and sodecided to curtail all of that. Now lives quietly with his wife Imam and little daughter. Has a book coming out later this year though.

I like this. Good power-pop, and it swipes the guitar riff from The Clash's "London's Burning." Is the rest of the album worthwhile? I assume it's a few years old. West Side Story totally transcends the genre of the musical. it is a sort of opera really. But when real opera stars perform it they lose something of it's essence. Leonard Bernstein's Candide is also good - but cannot compare to West Side Story.

Ironically enough, the two leads in the film mime to the vocals of others. And I've always felt that Richard Beymer was miscast and, well, wet, as Tony. But the rest of the film, from the stunning and highly innovative visuals to the choreography and the singing, never misses a beat.

There was an interesting interview in The Guardian a short while ago with Russ Tamblyn who played Riff, which lifted the lid on some of the myths around the film.

The album cover design was by Andy Warhol and the original plan was to have a pink balloon which flopped out when you pulled down the zip. Meanwhile that zip damaged any record cover you stacked it with.

They also wrote this, which, covered by Nilsson, reached no 1 in the UK.

He was a wonderful songwriter with a supreme gift for both lyrics and melody, so it's ironic that his biggest hits were covers of other writers' songs (Everybody's Talkin' was by Fred Neill).
