The last 6 minutes of Mountain Jam by the Allman Brothers Band from Macon, GA. recorded on the closing night of the Fillmore East NY ( June 27, 1971) affectionately known as “the Church of Rock and Roll” which gave rise to such acts as Joplin, Hendrix, Frank Zappa and countless others. This album is widely accepted as one of the greatest live recordings of all time because of its tight guitar and drum work. Rolling Stone rates it in the Top 50 Albums of all time. Many who witnessed it say not since John Coltrane has an ensemble preformed so precisely. The concert went on the early morning hours , only stopping for the boys to swig more Kentucky Bourbon....and the once great rock n roll theater, The Fillmore was turned into a gay club, and is now a bank. The only thing remaining from that now gone forever era is the recordings such as this. Not only is the Fillmore gone, but several months after this epic performance, guitar virtuoso Duane Allman was killed as his Harley was cut off by a truck .
The music is uniquely black American guitar Blues brought to a level that won't be seen again.

Paul Simon lost the plot a few albums ago IMHO. The odd brilliant song but a lot of thinner stuff.



I agree. Graceland was the last truly great album. IMHO his achievement with the trilogy of songs about the American Dream - America, from Bookends, American Tune from Kodachrome, and Graceland, from the eponymous album, are the musical equivalent of Steinbeck's finest prose. Carved in granite.
