I had a suspicion Stavros was going to say at least one Monty Python film, however Airplane even while drunk is a welcome surprise!
One of my favority comedies is Fletch. Forgot to mention that one.
on an individual basis, there are a lot of funny movies out there. I thought movies like "Anchorman-The legend of Ron Burgundy" ...and "The Forty Year Old Virgin" (especially with the DVD out takes) were hilarious.

I mentioned newscaster John Beard used to get thoroughly wasted in a place I worked at immediately after reading the 10 O'Clock News. He'd come outside and chew on my ear about Anchorman being about him and how those fuckers ripped him off.

Shit, I hope he's not a lurker here. If any anchorman is, it's Johnny.

The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence) (2013) - IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1883367/)
Mess sounds like the right word here is the news about THC3...
As those who've seen the first two instalments in Tom Six's horror series will know, there isn't much wriggle room in The Human Centipede. And so it seems to be proving behind the scenes, too, with an impasse between Six and actor Dieter Laser threatening to hold up filming on the third film in the franchise, which had been scheduled to start in June.
Laser had long been rumoured to return in the new film, reprising his role as the dastardly doctor who first has a crack at sewing together three kidnap victims mouth-to-anus, despite his character receiving a bullet to the head in the first film's final reel. The fate of his opposite number in the second film, however, was less ambiguous: Laurence Harvey's obese car-park attendant, an avid fan of the first film, who successfully cobbled together a dozen-strong tribute centipede, was last seen alive and well – he, too, will return for the final film.
But an email sent by producer Ilona Six to bestmoviesevernews.com suggest that last-minute objections by Laser to the script are so severe as to not only push back the shoot but also prompt the producers to begin legal action against him. Six wrote:
Because of the success of The Human Centipede, it seems that Mr Dieter Laser's ego has grown to laughably big proportions. First signing the contract and rating the THC3 script as fantastic, and then demanding his own unacceptable script changes, and now refusing to play the part only seven weeks prior to shooting. Six Entertainment Company will start legal action against Dieter Laser. Tom Six says not to worry – principal photography will be postponed and will take place later this year.
The actor then hit back with his own clarification of the wrangle, which he blames on late delivery of a script he felt bore little relation to the plot as earlier outlined. As a "method actor" Laser describes his difficulties swallowing a premise he felt inconsistent with his character's personality. Laser said:
It's very simple: I loved the story when it was told, got the contract and the promise to have the script in four-to-six weeks. When it arrived – half a year later and only after the official announcement – I didn't like the realization at all, couldn't identify with the character the way it was written and developed immediately and enthusiastically in a day and night marathon a version full of concrete and practical suggestions which would enable me to play the lead full throttle – same procedure as with Dr Heiter – but this time it also would have had some unavoidable effects to the dramatic structure. That was too much for Tom and since he couldn't live with my suggestions and I, as a method actor, couldn't identify with his version, I told him that I couldn't see any other way than that he would have to "change horses". That's it.
Plot details of the new film are still uncertain, but a tweet from Tom Six earlier this year suggested that he might extend the number of people in the chain to more than 500.

Lola (Brillante Mendoza, 2009)
After watching Kinatay (which I reviewed last week)-Mendoza's merciless account of the lack (or loss) of integrity in the Manila police service, Lola contrasts the difference between price and value in Manila, and with controlled savagery exposes the greater importance of money over life. The attempt by one grandmother ('Lola') to maintain her dignity while the other Lola wheels and deals, and tells as many lies to her own family in order to extract money, fails to deal with the core problem in which the flow of water that has so aggravated the already over-burdened residents of Manila (the film was made in Mandaluyong not long after a major flood), is as evanescent as the flow of money. Even when the resolution of the film is conferred with a payment some would see as 'blood money', nobody is better off. The depiction of Manila is dismally normal: traffic chaos, bag snatchers in jeepneys, random search and destroy missions by the police on unlicensed street traders, someone always trying to sell someone else -anyone else- whatever they have. The Philippines has not been part of the Asian economic miracle, it probably needs a miracle or ten to get out of its vicious cycle of poverty and debt. Spare in dialogue and its use of music, Mendoza is emerging as the most important film-maker from the Philippines since Lina Brocka, and I prefer his films too.

Went to a preview of "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", forthcoming film by the wonderful director Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) based on the book by Mohsin Hamid. The Friends of Eddie Coyle
Entertaining movie. Involves a main character trying to avoid a prison stint he has awaiting him. He is an older low level criminal who possesses a sort of time-worn wisdom. He wants to avoid doing time at all costs and the movie traces his dealings with all sorts of dangerous characters, from former associates to deal-making detectives. The dialogue is well written, the story believable, and the interactions authentic seeming.

Soy Cuba (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1964).
I have been watching Cuban films in a box set, Strawberry and Chocolate, the brilliant Lucia, and the so-so Memories of Underdevelopment. I Am Cuba by the director of the truly awful Russian slosh [I]The Cranes are Flying, has moments of technical and artistic brilliance, but for the most part is a dollop of Soviet propaganda at times so embarrassing in its depiction of life under the bloodthirsty tyrant Batista and those corrupt Yanqui imperialists, it is unworthy of an intelligent audience. Watch Lucia and see the difference between thinking and feeling, and a message from the Central Committee.

Amour (Michael Haneke, 2012)
Haneke recreated his parent's apartment, and based this film in part on the death of his Aunt. The acting from Trintignant, Riva and Huppert is superb, and if you do not stray too far outside the confines of the film this is one of Haneke's best. The problem is that it raises a moral question and as he has done before, Haneke manipulates the moral feelings of his audience while claiming to be neutral. For this reason a compelling film, if only for the stunning performance by Emmanuelle Riva. The film does not tell the whole truth about looking after someone as ill as the Riva character, but that doesn't matter. The film pays homage to Tarkovski with the music of Bach (the chorale prelude that is also used in Solaris, Wir Ruft zu dir, Herr Jesus Christ).

Blind Chance (Krysztof Kieslowski, 1981)
Kieslowski made this film film in 1980 but it wasn't shown until 1987 for political reasons. The film begins on an aeroplane that is seen at the very end, and offers three narratives of a man running after a train from Poznan to Warsaw, and either catching it or not -leading into three different stories all of which end with the possibility of that plane journey from Warsaw to Paris. I can't quite put my finger on it but there is something cold about Kieslowski's films which prevents me from loving them; they are great to watch, good scripts, good acting, but I wonder if he is too intellectual a film-maker-? His third feature after Scars, and Camera Buff, and one of his best films.

The Station Agent? Really?????? I've never like Peter Dinklage in anything. In every movie, he just seems like an unpleasant guy who is waiting for someone to notice his stature so he can silently judge how shallow they are. Watched 'The Great and Powerful Oz' last weekend w/James Franco, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams. They did a real nice job trying to make it a pre-quel and according to a NY Times article there were many iconic Wizard of Oz references they werent allowed to use due to legal battles over who owns what so that must not have been easy. The fact is, the movie was just tooooooo long. Two hours in and James Franco is still trying to convince everyone that he isnt a real wizard. If they gutted 45 minutes from the middle of this film I'd give it a possible 6 stars.

Oblivion (Joseph Kosinski, 2013)
The kindest thing I can say is that if this film is consigned to oblivion nobody will notice. As so often with films about earth after a nuclear holocaust, there are still little patches of green where you can get fresh drinking water, grow tomatoes, and get out the vinyl, relax and listen to Procul Harum in 2077 as the sun sets. But all is not what it seems, and only one man can rescue the remains of humanity from the deathly campaign of the TET (no, not the Thetans, the TET). Yes, of course there is a wise old man among the rebellious human survivors, and yes, he does say of Jack Harper 'He's the one'; then upgrade him to Commander. In fact, they like Jack Harper so much there are multiple copies. And yes, the music is made up of four notes repeated endlessly to marching drums, then whooshh....silence....crash! Or snap, crackle and pop. The biggest let down is in not seeing as much of Andrea Riseborough's naked body as I would like, there was nothing else of interest in this garbled nonsense.

Hey Sukumvit, thanks for reminding me about Alone In the Wilderness. To those who have no idea, I saw it in NY on public television a few years ago and it is perhaps the most remarkable document of an independent spirit I have ever seen. NO bullshit, no fanfare...I need a shovel so I'll make one, I need a house so I'll make one, I need food so I'll make some. I can't win; if I watch Tom Cruise or get down with the penguins in Madagascar the response is disbelief, if I watch Satanango or anything by Bergman or Ozu I am told to chill...I have a wide range of tastes. And as I had not read a review of Oblivion I thought I would give it a try -I don't watch all the sci-fi films that come out but it is one of the genres that interests me, unlike vampies and zombies which I have never understood or enjoyed.

"Mean Streets" - revisiting the wonderful old Martin Scorsese movie with one of the earliest screen apearences by Robert Di Niro. Wears its age well.

Last show - I post it here though it isn't a movie - was "The book Of Mormon" - new to the london stage after becoming a huge hit on Broadway. It is written by the guys behind South Park. Very ribald, very disrespectful of Mormonism, but not necessarily of religion per se, and really quite childish. (Some accuse it of racism too. I let them off on that since everyone is totally ridiculed and disrespected.) If you enjoy the total rudeness of South park, you'll love this. I recently watched the South Park movie and thought it just too dumb. This show is great fun.

"Flying Blind" a low key and rather predictable little film about an aeronautical engineer Helen McRory who meets and gets involved with an Algerian "student." The romance is not credible and the storyrline and its outcome very predictable. Good acting though.

And "Promised Land" an overly sentimentalised story about a company coming to a tiny town in rural American (Pennsylvania I think) to try and sell the community the idea of how rich they'll become if they sell the rights to allow fracking. A nice story well told - with a good twist. Directed by Gus Van Sant with Matt Damon and Francis McDormand.

The Bank Job (Roger Donaldson, 2008)
The real life robbery at Lloyd's Bank in 1971 is ranked as one of the most lucrative and enigmatic crimes of the era. The thieves targeted the safety deposit boxes many of whose owners declined to make a claim or reveal what they had inside them. Because it is alleged a 'D' Notice (a govt request to the press not to publish a story for reasons of 'national security') was issued that stopped the press from reporting the incident, a mystique has grown up, fuelled by suspicions that there were incriminating photos of Princess Margaret taking part in a Caribbean orgy in one of the boxes. Donaldson has therefore wrapped up the core robbery with a spooky plot in which the slum landlord, pimp and drug runner Michael X has the photos in the safety deposit box, MI5 or MI6 induce the petty thieves to do a bank job to get hold of the photos through their contact with the gang, without realising the backstory, and so on. The film would have been just as good without the Michael X plot, given that he could have a film to himself (he was hanged in Trinidad in 1975). Acting is pretty good all round.

Revolver (Guy Ritchie 2005)
It would be an understatement to describe this film as pretentious rubbish, after all it does come with an association with Luc Besson, which should be a warning. References to The Usual Suspects merely expose further the weakness of this film which tries to fold in on itself to confuse the audience as to what is real or fake or who is ripping off whom. There is no real philosophy behind this. I worked out who the arch-manipulators were about half way through, the film is that lame. If anything, this is a film about the film industry, the egos involved, and the way money is moved around to create a product that only a few profit from, if at all. I just didn't care.

Not a movie but a play....a disappointing visit to The Royal Court to see "The Low Road" by Dominic Cooke whose play "Clybourne Park" was so terrific. This American satire on free market capitalism had its heart in the right place but was, otherwise, simplistic, overlong, clumsy and chaotic. Where "Clybourne Park" was political but focused this via real believable people, "The Low Road" was just a crude cartoon.

I watched three British films this week: a filmed version on Alan Bennett's play The History Boys which was on tv - this play/film is a tedious rehash of Bennett's inverted snobbery and another desperate attempt to write about his own homosexuality, not even worth the licence fee. The second film, Terence Davies Distant Voices, Still Lives, is a brilliantly filmed but characteristically sour piece of self-reflection that to me was too episodic to be anything but of passing interest; the songs were particularly second-rate, if popular in their day.
The Devils (Ken Russell, 1971)
Undoubtedly Russell's finest achievement, with a vivid set by Derek Jarman, music by Peter Maxwell-Davies, and based on real events in Loudon in 1634 -for some reason I didn't see the film when it was released, probably because I detested The Music Lovers (1970); but I read Huxley's book and was fascinated by it.
What is not referred to once in the documetary made by Mark Kermode on the two-DVD set I have (linked below), is the recurrence of gender-bending/transgendered characters in Russell's films: The Devils opens with the King of France (Louis 13th) appearing on stage in a pageant in which he plays Venus rising from the sea, in full drag, with most of his courtiers cross-dressed -the scene establishes a sense of corruption at the highest level of the state -Cardinal Richelieu is in attendance-, and is thus a key part of the narrative in which the same forces of the state seek to impose a 'pure' Catholic faith on independent towns like Loudon supposedly taken over by satanic forces- where the Catholic priest, Urbain Grandier refuses to purge Protestants or remove the city walls which symbolise the town's independence. The consequent descent into devil-worship and debauchery -manufactured by the Catholic Church- became the pivot of the collapse of provincial independence and a demonstration of the powers of a state ruled from Paris.
The film was censored before its release, the climactic 'the rape of Christ' by the Ursuline nuns in the church being considered too extreme at the time and since, although I believe there is a pirate copy with the scene restored. The film's weakness, common in Russell's oeuvre, is a lack of subtlety, it is full-on -and one reason why the film attracted such hostile publicity, at a time when Mrs Whitehouse in the UK (similar to Anita Bryant in the US) was campaigning for 'public morals' against 'filth, pornography' and so on.
Vanessa Redgrave is outstanding throughout in a brave and bravura exhibition of acting prowess.

I went to see Iron Man 3 in 3D -I think I have said before that there is something about Robery Downey Jr that makes him compulsive viewing -an unconventional conventional hero if there is such a thing. The film is entertaining tosh with a delightful cameo from his eminence, Sir Ben Kingsley.
Probably said this before too: what is the point of 3D? I don't think it made that much difference in this film. In whichever dimension you see it, Ms Paltrow doesn't have appealing curves on her rear end.

Haven't seen the film yet, but I think I know what you mean about Downey Jr. He's got plenty of charisma - as do many top actors - but he can also act. He's not going to make me want to see his Holmes films...but he does give weight to a movie.
One other thing he has over a lot of people - he comes across as very likeable. From what I've read, he is a very nice person in real life.

Totally agree, Prospero! It's one of the most unrecognised film I can think of. Botticelli's angels in a sublime setting. Just a breathtaking flick! Long and meditative film. I loved it. Weir showed how great he is there. Unfortunately, he was then recruted by Hollywood with "Witness" (am I drunk? it was him, wansn't it?). Thanks, Ben! Yes, I can’t help defending this one, because it’s like few people have paid attention… Seems like just another thriller type of essay film, but it’s about identity, how we create it, how changing and moving it is, how we constantly retouch who and what we are by telling ourselves our own story. And so brilliantly made! Not easy to follow, but wow! it just leave you in awe.

"Shame", by Michael Fassbender, with Steve McQueen and Carey Mulligan. Second viewing. I modified my judgement on it, although it was already positive. Beautifully filmed. Slow, very meditative rythm for a film with such a subject. Economical but absolutly brilliant scenario. The photography is often breathtaking. I love this movie. Tough though, very tough. And McQueen as excellent as always.

The strength of the film is in its acting and dialogue; there is a lot of sex in films, but very few films about sex, which is what this film deals with so intelligently. I think it is one of the best films made in recent years, and Fassbender is emerging as one of the most interesting actors too, and puts into shade a tedious bore like Jack Nicholson described in today's Telegraph as 'The King of Acting' --!!

I've seen this one a little while back, but I don't think anyone has mentioned it here. The "Palme d'Or" at Cannes in 2011, "Drive", by Nicolas Winding Refn, with Ryan Goslin and Carey Mulligan. Another slow, meditative movie, but in this case, much lighter in terms of content. Yet, the photography is amazing, especially the urban night scenes, and the thin anecdote is told brilliantly. Not in my book of great films, but I liked it a lot nontheless. Worth seeing it.

I agree that it is an intelligent film, a good film about sex and that Jack Nicholson is - at least on the strength of anything he has done for the past 25 years - a hugely overated actor who thinks leering substitutes for just about anything in his acting.
Don't think it one of the best films of recent years though by a long chalk.

I was surprised by this one, an animated feature from Israel, by Ari Folman, "Waltz with Bashir" (2008). This movie is strangely made exactly the same way it could have been in a regular production, despite being an animation film, which is the first striking thing about it. It's the story of an Israeli soldier who participated to the invasion of Lebanon in 1982, and who can't possibly recall events he has some images of, and keep dreaming of. Seems so innocent, oniric, and yet is such a powerful evocation of the conflicts that destroyed this beautiful country. And as the film progresses, you have the feeling you understand the reason why it was made as animation; it's too hard to tell, just exactly as it is too hard for the character to remember. No huge violence scene, no wild "action", just accounts given by people who were there as invaders, and try to put the puzzle back togheter. The voices are authentically those of the former soldiers presented in the movie. Very compelling, as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting thematic link to the truly superb "Incendies" which I posted about a few postings back - the war that ravag the lives of the lebanese. Israel is only a back drop in "Incendies'. "Waltz with bashir" was indeed excellent.
We van only hope for the time when film maker can look back at the present hatred ravaging Syria and make movies about it.

It's always with some reluctence that I get myself to see movies with such difficult subject matters. Guess I'm a bit of a "pussy". But I'll get to this one as I always eventually get to all interresting films like it. :)
As to Syria, yes, you're right, Prospero. It seems like such a remote possibility right now...

Last night I saw what I suspect may be next year's Oscar and Bafta winner for best foreign film. It's a wholly enchanting french comedy called "Populaire" (a brand of French typewriter) which is about typewriters and relationships. Set in 1958/59 in Lisieux in France. Utterly charming. It has Berenice Bejo (female lead in The Artist) but the two main characters are played by an actress i'd not seen before - Deborah Francois - and Romain Duris.
it's the first film from a director called Regis Roinsard.
A seasoned audience from the film and television industry burst into spontaneous applause at its conclusion at an industry screening in London last night.

Outskirts (Boris Barnet, 1933)
An early example of Russian sound, rather crude, but curious film which seems to be a mixture of the tragic and the comic, possibly satirical. Set between the outbreak of World War 1 and the Revolution of 1917 in a remote town of Tsarist Russia, mostly revolves around the life of shoemakers, one with two sons who die in the war, the other with a young daughter who befriends a German POW. The film lacks substance, but I recall there was a Barnet retrospective at the National Film Theatre in I think the 1980s so his later films might have been better.
There must be hundreds of Russian films that have never been shown in the English-speaking world.

I have never seen the whole of this film before, so now having done so and also watched it twice with Brian Cox's narration I think it is quite outstanding; there are flaws, and I am not sure about Pinbacker, but it is an accomplished film which doesn't take the imagination too far away from reality, as Cox points out for example, the outer surface/layers of the Sun at 6,000C is cooler than the heat generated by re-entry into earth which can had up to 20,000C and so on. Acting is formidable too, and let's face it SciFi movies (Star Wars and Star Trek being obvious) can often be so beyond belief they are not worth watching at all.

Star Trek 2.... Imax, 3D.... predictable, unoriginal, uninventive and the same visual elements, with some extra polish, that have filled mass audience sci-fi since Stars Wars (and how long ago was that!). Dull and stupidly crass and only intermittently bearable. The originality of the first new Stars Trek film has evaporated leaving cliched nods to character and way too much crash bang and cosmic wallop. This is cinema for kids not adults - even those who enjoy some silly entertainment. It was not entertaining.

About Star Trek 2. I didn't think it was that bad, but I didn't go into it with very high expectations.
Pros: I thought the special effects were great, the guy who plays Kirk is pretty good and I liked Khan.
Cons: The McCoy character is horrible, too many cliches and reverse story situations and the Admiral piloting the super battleship was not very believable.
I know there will never be another Shatner/Nimoy era and I've learned to accept that. Gene Roddenberry is long dead and, for the most part, the general public is a bit too stupid and lacks the attention span for intense, intelligent sci-fi stories. Therefore, I've tried to dumb myself down and enjoy them as much as I can.

My knowledge of Latin American cinema is not extensive -I saw most of Glauber Rocha's films in the 70s, and saw three of them again recently (Black God, White Devil; Land in Anguish; Antonio das Mortes) and was also keen on Sweet Hunters and Os Cafajestes by Ruy Guerra. I think along with Cuban cinema, Lucia (Humberto Solas) in the 60s and 70s they were playing with narrative structure, but it is also something one also notices with Inarritu's films (Amores Perros, Babel), whereas Argentinian films I have seen are often about the underside of life in Buenos Aires and how people struggle to make a living in a precarious economy -Nine Queens, The Secret in their Eyes and Carancho being quite different from say Happy Together (Wong Kar Wai) which is also set in Buenos Aires. Mexico also has Gael Garcia Bernal, good at both acting and directing, his film Deficit stands up to repeated viewing. Have no idea what is happening outside Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and Argentina, these seem to be the main countries regularly producing good films, although I am not an admirer of the recent Brazilian films about prison life. Would appreciate some recommendations.

"The Bling Ring" - Sophia Coppola's new film based on a factual Vanity Fair feature about a group of young California girls, plus one guy, who go on a robbery spree in LA - stealing stuff from the likes of Paris Hiton and Lindsay Lohan. An overlong film which could have thrown some light on the perculiar culture of young kids who are fascinated by the empty fame of people like Hilton and who aspire to the sort of fame that accrues without any visible talent. But it spends too long on the bling and partying little time on probing beneath to offer a glipe of this lost generation.

"Fail Safe" a 1964 movie made at the height of the Cold War. it is a chilling piece about what could have easily happened during the era of MAD... as a fault in the system fails to stop a response to a perceived Soviet nuclear attack on the US. Shot in black and white and low key without any of the ludicrous and unnecessary special effects used in so many modern movies about disasters, it is all the more frightening and plausible for that. Henry Fonda as the US President is brilliant.

Two films by Eric Rohmer -La Femme de l'aviateur (1981) and L'ami de mon amie (1987). Some people can't stand Rohmer's films because it appears to be people chatting for ever about their relationships or perfect idea of one, yet part of the secret to Rohmer is that people often say one thing and do another, while he often plays with colours and settings to offer a commentary, sometimes a contradiction of what the people are doing and thinking; he also uses the most exquisitely beautiful French women.

Just saw with my gf a huge, surrealistic farce, "Ted", with Mark Wahlberg and cutie Mila Kunis. It's the silly and idiotic tale of the friendship between a guy and his talking teddy bear. I know how it sounds, I felt exactly the same way when I read the synopsis: "Please! God! No!" But in the end, I must admit I had fun. It's enormous, of couse, the "meaning", if you want to go as far as calling that, is as thin as a paper sheet, but I had fun. If you watch it and do not in your case, blame it on the whisky -which by the way was a 12 yrs old Glenlivet, and that's enough to deserve forgiveness...

Yes, I saw this one a few times on pay tv. I just didn't want to see it. It's too tough. I'm not tough enough for such a subject. Loosing a child must be draining all life out of you; parent's worst nightmare. There wouldn't be a second of hesitation for me to accept death rather than having my child die. To me, this is simply utter horror, and I can't even get myself to see it on film... I might be a bit nuts...

Just watched All The President's Men followed by Good Night and Good Luck. I thought the former was a much more enjoyable film than the latter. First, there is a trajectory to All the President's Men where they are tracking down the Watergate culprits all the way up the ladder from CRP into the white house.
In Good Night and Good Luck, we follow the story of a brave journalist who makes mincemeat of the small-minded bully Joseph McCarthy. The problem is that it's just a series of speeches around the newsroom. A scurrilous attack by McCarthy and a rebuttal by Murrow. Very important part of history but I think it was an overrated movie. We get the sense of what it's like to be attacked by McCarthy and the courage it took to oppose his tactics but the other characters are not very well developed nor is tension effectively built throughout the film.

I forgot. The most recent was "Leaving" a French film from 2009 with Kristin Scott Thomas. Very emotionally raw film about a woman whose affair destroys her marriage.

Very good movie.
Highly recommended, if you miss it.

EVIL DEAD...it freakin sucked.the original from the 80's is a million times better..funny how a movie from the 80's has better graphics, special effects and WAY better acting than a new production..

If you haven't seen it already, I'd suggest the excellent Akira Kurosawa film Dersu Uzala which is set in the Siberian wilderness

One of the best Latin American films I've seen. Deals very well with the guilty secrets of Argentina's dirty war.
Dark Rose, if you enjoyed Ricardo Darin's performance, get hold of Carancho, very different but he is terrific.

The Gatekeepers - Perspectives from all of the former heads of Shin Bet about the role of the agency and their personal feelings about that role. I think the documentary maker deliberately avoided politics and tried to focus on the personal element.
A very interesting film and not at all what I expected. If you suspend your cynicism and listen and watch carefully I think you can see the machine isn't necessarily always just a machine.

"In The House" wonderful French film with Kristen Scott Thomas directed by francois Ozon. Intriguing tale of a gifted young pupil at a french school, the teacher who helps him develop his talent and the strane entanglement that follows. Very original.

The Big Lebowski- My third or fourth viewing of a movie I had only previously thought was okay. For some reason I found it much funnier than the other viewings. The scene where the nihilists threw the marmot in the bathtub was too funny.
I still think Hudsucker Proxy sucked and won't be giving it another chance, didn't like the Man Who Wasn't There, nor Intolerable Cruelty and Burn After Reading was so-so. The first Coen brothers movie I found funny...I previously liked Fargo and Miller's Crossing but none of their comedies.
Been reading some Jim Thompson books so I'm going to watch The Grifters tonight.

Oblivion
Visually it was great. But the story was a bit boring and the plot seemed to move along too slowly. This lead to the ending being a big meh.

Oh yeah. Yet to watch, but I've heard good things. Haven't seen Barton Fink, Raising Arizona, or Blood Simple. A bit behind:).

Watched High Noon. Thought it was excellent, but think the ending was a bit too positive. Actually think it would have jibed a bit better with the message of the movie if things hadn't worked out so rosy.
