Sorry Ben its not even close to the original -Sean Bean looks mean very well, Rutger Hauer IS a psycho, a man living on the razor blade edge of extinction and daring others to take the trip with him...
I should check it out, I guess. To compare it.
The latest craze in Hollywood is the remake. Whether it's Halloween or The Fog or whatever.
It's kinda annoying when they mess around, as it were, with the original. But then again Hollywood isn't motivated by art -- ha! ha!

Watched the final instalment of Stieg Larsson's brilliant Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest on DVD.
Please see the original before Hollywood totally fucks it up. It amazes me that Noomi Rapace in the title role of Lisbeth Salander has been overlooked for acting awards - she lived in the character for more than two years while they shot the books back to back. As a piece of brilliantly sustained characterisation of an individual on the edge it'w without parallel imho.

I haven't seen any of those, but I really want to! By the way, have you seen the Swedish film Let The Right One In? I've seen the remake Let Me In, and I was really blown away by the acting and the subtext of the movie, and was wondering if, as they usually are, the original is better.

I've seen both versions too. The Hollywood one is not that bad, to be fair, but it lacks the subtlety and intimacy of the original, and the kids are just not in the same ball park as actors. The other thing is that the original has no special effects whatsoever - the suspense and strangeness of the movie is all about the atmosphere; the lighting, editing and also the slow pace add to that.
When it comes to subtle suspense the Asians and the Europeans know how to do it. All too often Hollywood substitutes special effects, loud bangs and extra gore. They just don't get it.

Thanks! I actually thought the acting of the girl in the remake was really good, but the boy was just average.

In the original the kids are just extraordinary. You hardly notice the adults - they are almost incidental.
Let the Right One In was the best film I saw in all of 2010.
Best so far this year has to be the Argentinian thriller The Secret in their Eyes which won the best foreign film oscar last year.
You guys should get over the subtitles hurdle - you miss some great movies otherwise.
I'm lucky that there's a great independent cinema in Cambridge where the best foreign movies come. Otherwise they never make the multiplexes and you have to wait for the DVD.

I personally don't mind subtitles. I enjoyed Apocalypto and The Downfall, which are completely in subtitles. I thought The Passion of The Christ had amazing cinematography, but the dialogue was somewhat incidental to that film, it was much more of a visual experience.

Hey, it's not like subtitles are all that accurate either. A lot of the Asian films have awful subtitles...however, at least you get to hear the emotion in the performers voices instead of some added on dubbing...I prefer subtitles also.
...but it does make me sleepy to have to read when I'm stoned...lol.

You're right about Asian films - around 20 years ago it was as if they deliberately set out to make the subtitles and translation really funny. Did you get the Japanese series Monkey in the US? It was a classic of that type.
However, with European films the translation is pretty faithful - I speak German and French fluently, and the English versions are usually excellent.

Midnight run, pretty good
The Expendables. Or: I tried to watch it. Couldn't get into it. I mean, the dialogue was lame. And I've seen these scenes a million times before: punch ups in the middle of a city (um, where are the police -- ha! ha!), gun fights. Again, where are the police -- ha! ha!
And car chases. Again, where are the police??? ha! ha! ha! I mean, it seems as soon as a Sly Stallone character enters a city the police magically disappear -- ha! ha!
But you gotta hand it to him. He's... what... like 64, 65... and built like a tank.

After Terrence Malick won the Palme d'Or for The Tree of Life I realised I had only seen Badlands, and that was on its release. So I decided to buy the available films, all of them except for his early short film from 1969, Lanton Mills, which I can't find. I watched them out of sequence but am now re-watching them in the sequence in which they were made -Badlands (1973), Days of Heaven(1978), The Thin Red Line (1998), and The New World (2005). Obviously I haven't seen The Tree of Life and don't know when it will be available in the UK. Apparently people either love or hate Malick, he is either a crushing bore or profound -I am not going to comment until I have watched them all at least twice, but I am an enthusiast.
Of the Europeans, I have been very impressed with Jacques Audiard -A Prophet, See How They Fall and The Beat That My Heart Skipped (a remake of Fingers); and although I detest Funny Games and The Piano Teacher, Michael Haneke's other films are outstanding -Code Inconnu in particular, but that's also because Juliette Binoche is at the top of the range -yes, Scott-Thomas was awesome in I've Love You So Long, but she didn't need an award to be recognised for it -Oscars and other gewgaws have no meaning or value, other than the extra cash they generate....

I've Loved You So Long has the best female performance of last year. How Kristin Scott-Thomas doesn't win awards by the bucketful is beyond me. Maybe because she does so few English language films these days
With you on KST - I was a believer since I saw the English Patient. A remarkable actress like so many other actors out of the UK. Quite surprised at some of the less famous ones like those in:

If it's strictly 2011, my pick would be Potiche which I saw last week.
If it's the last twelve months, then I'd go for Julia's Eyes.
Not that I'm trying to influence you in any way, old chap.
I just finished watching Julia's Eyes which I enjoyed particularly the last 3rd of the movie. While stylish, I thought the story was a little weak and if not for the cinematography and the performance by the lead actress and the killer it would have been a bit of a joke.

The Quiet American was on the BBC last night, a different version from the 1958 Joseph Mankiewicz version, and one that apparently is more faithful to the book by Graham Greene, not much of a recommendation in my view. Greene's initially 'amoral' Times Correspondent (Thomas Fowler, played by Michael Caine -an invention as Fowler did not exist in real life) is eventually so disgusted by the lies he has been told by an 'Aid' worker who actually works for the CIA (Brendan Fraser) that he colludes in his murder, not sure where the morals went there. A dreary film with no depth, rather like Graham Greene's dreary books...

The Messenger - newly released in UK, out in the USA for some 18 months. A very downbeat film about war - a soldier in final months is ordered to join the detail who must break news of casualties to the nearest and dearest of the slain. it's a very sobering film and a good antidote to all those dumb ass films like Rambo. It joins The Hurt Locker and Restrepo and Armadillo and Lebanon as sensible films about the complexities and costs of combat.

There is a John Wayne film where, at the end, he goes off to write letters to the families of the men who died in the war -I think its the civil war but I can't recall. A poignant moment, not sure if an entire film on the subject is excessive. I didn't like The Hurt Locker or that other one set in the Emerald City with Matt Damon -the only half-way decent film to come out of the Iraq experience was In The Valley of Elah.
Has anyone seen Tank? I thought Waltzing with Bashir was awesome.
Prospero

The Valley of Elah was one of films of that particular year. Hugely underated and nowhere near as successful as it should have been. Try Armadillo (documentary about a danish unit in Afghanistan) or Lebanon (film about israeli tank team in the Lebanon) and yes Waltzing with Bashir was fabulous. You might also then like Lemon Tree.

Do you mean the Green Zone with Matt Damon? I thought it was a brilliant film. The most poingnant moment was right at the end just before the closing credits where the American troops were driving along the Iraq highways in their humvees and the camera pans & pulls out to show them driving towards all the oil refineries in the distance. Some hidden depth in that shot with regards to America's perceived involvent in the whole affair.
The other good film set in that part of the world I thought was Body of Lies with Leonardo di Caprio & Russel Crowe, again quite thought provoking.

The problem I have with Green Zone is that I read the book on which it was -admittedly loosely- based, and it is far superior to the film. I know the film is a drama with a heavy dose of fiction, but in both Green Zone and The Hurt Locker you have scenes with an American soldier wandering around Baghdad at night on his own -how stupid is that? Also in Green Zone you have the cliche of the idealistic, energetic youth who becomes progressively disillusioned as the weapons of mass destruction fail to appear, and the jaded, cynical CIA agent with one foot in the departure lounge, the cruel heartless bureaucrats, and so on -we are back to all those 'moral' films about Vietnam which rarely featured Vietnamese and were mostly about Amercian angst -so far we haven't had a film on Iraq from an Arab perspective, and Green Zone is just another slice of Hollywood-Goes-to-War. The reality was far worse than anything captured in these films.

True Grit- I found myself turned on by the 14 year old girl at the beginning :( I think its because of her masculine attitude I liked that LMFAO! It's a good movie with a LOVELY soundtrack.
Christopher and His Kind- If you u think the current Dr. WHO, Matt Smith, is hot then that's plenty the reason to watch this flick! Its based on the writer Christopher Isherwood.

Tough call. A lot depends on whether you prefer John Wayne or Jeff Bridges in the role. I favour Jeff. And last year's version was closer to the book, which I read and enjoyed immensely, and had a lot more "grit" (sorry!) and darkness.

Jeff Bridges is a great actor, and he was good in True Grit. I am just one of those who thinks remakes should be outlawed. You want to compare it to the original, and the remake is rarely ever as good as the original. I am a John Wayne fan to the end. Wayne was a unique actor that many have tried to copy, but failed horribly. There are some actors that should never be replaced in remakes. Wayne is one of them.
But that is just my opinion and I could be wrong. (even though I'm not).

I know both movies and I've read the book. The Coen brothers' film wasn't a remake, it was a faithful interpretation of the original novel.
Now, as for their "reinterpretation" of the Ealing classic, The Ladykillers, that was undiluted shite from start to finish, a travesty.

Go to the Martin Beck Theatre and watch Katharine Hepburn run the gamut of emotions from A to B
Dorothy Parker's review of The Lake (1933). The irony is that Parker meant it as a joke as she liked Hepburn, but over-rated Hepburn's talent. I can't think of any other so-called 'actress' who appeared in films, other than Marilyn Monroe, who makes me feel so embarrassed when I see them -and luckily its on tv so I can switch over or off as soon as she appears. Its a pity we can't go through the prints and erase her from history. Parker, incidentally, died in a drunken stupor and left the residue of her estate to Martin Luther King (it was actually passed on to the NAACP).

You must be a masochist then, or a man with a lot of time to kill, I mean, Star Trek!
Anyway here in the UK we had a choice of Miami Vice (Michael Mann) or Arlington Road -I was watching Miami Vice but the reception is poor where I live and I couldn't understand what most of the people were saying, but Arlington Road was so silly. Anyway I like Michael Mann as a director, his films always look good, I don't like the music but can see how it fits; I also think he has a skill at action/drama films, there is no fat, its all very tightly woven, although I believe he either chooses to or has had to re-edit films to make them shorter (eg The Keep). His initial Hanibal Lecktor film (Manhunter) is vastly superior to Silence of the Lambs, and Miami Vice is a film I will watch again on dvd just to se Gong Li...its anyway much better than the tv series except for the two actors who are dire -and I dont know why Americans hire people from the UK to play Americans, they rarely get the accent right and I am sure there are home-grown Americans who can do it.

Yep - I agree Stavros re Bits being hire to play Americans. You say they rarely get the accent right, but the real issue is they think there is such a thing as "an American accent.' There are hundreds if not thousands of different regional accents there and most british actors offer a melange of all of them. I know NYC pretty well and in that city alone class and geography offer up a wide range of variations. The worst UK version of "an American" accent i ever heard though was on stage. Frances Barber in a revival of Night of The Iguana by Tennessee Williams. Her attempts at a Southern" accent sounded like something from The Goon Show.
Re Bridesmaids - sorry Robert louis - I did detect a difference between this and Bergman. Bergman is funnier.

Lucky Louie? Sure did. Everything Louis CK does is golden. I never miss him or Norm MacDonald when they're on Conan.
You guys gotta see Louis C.K: Hilarious. He fucking kills.
Lucky Louie was great on HBO. My favorite show was when his wife asked Louie to look close at her asshole in case he ever had to ID her dead body. Then she sticks her ass up in his face and he just stares at it. I lost it.

I just received the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine complete TV series on DVD. Seven seasons on 48 discs will take 4 to 6 weeks to watch even with marathons.
You must be a masochist then, or a man with a lot of time to kill, I mean, Star Trek!
All of the Star Trek series were great. We Americans love Star Trek. I have always been a Trekkie. I own the original series and all of the movies on BluRay HD. But my favorite was Deep Space Nine, and it hasn't been on TV for a while, so I bought it. DS9 was not your typical Star Trek. It was a novel written for TV. A story mostly about the people instead of the special effects.
I still run my own business but I am semi-retired and have time to watch that kind of stuff. Each disc has 4 episodes, and I can usually get in 1 disc per day, maybe 2 discs per day on a weekend. I can watch it when I want and without commercials. The episodes were only 45 minutes without breaks and interruptions.

I realised when Terrence Malick won the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year that I had only seen one of his films, Badlands. So far he has only made five films, and as The Tree of Life will be released I think this week or next week (but in London probably) I bought all the available films and watched them twice, the one I can't get is Malick's short from 1969, Lanton Mills.
Malick's films are all beautiful to look at -a cynic might say so is National Geographic; but there are times, particularly in The Thin Red Line and The New World, when he has an ability to make you feel this is a world before humans, and there are times when one feels humans are making a mess of it, at other times lost in it, and again times when you feel nature is actually indifferent to people. Most of his films seem to focus on the limits of human behaviour, people who deliberately take themselves over the edge (Badlands, Days of Heaven), or who are driven there by circumstance (Thin Red Line, New World); and all but Days of Heaven are based on real events, although even Days of Heaven is historically specific and the moment before the Great War shapes its background. Malick's films need an essay, and this isn't it, but I look forward to The Tree of Life, although I expect it will disappear soon after its release, but will be on dvd.

Watched Frozen River which is somewhat reminiscent of Winter's Bone- excellent movie. And currently watching Days of Heaven which - aside from the cinematography and music score - isn't as impressive as I thought it would be. Maybe it's the Sam Shepard connection: his 'masterpiece' screenplay Paris, Texas was such a disappointment that I'm now prejudiced towards him.
Next will be Gods and Men.

You need to get the big box set with every Twilight Zone episode. I love mine and think it's worth every penny. It goes on sale super cheap from time to time at Amazon.
Any love for Rod Serling's Night Gallery too? I grew up on it and watched it with my dad all the time as a kid. Seasons 1 & 2 are available. I just need the 3rd and last season.

Does Mildred Pierce the HBO mini series count? I just watched the whole run - about six hours in all. Beautifully realised. Kate Winslet is terrific, Gotta check out the 1945 old movie version with Joan Crawford now. It's presently playing on Sky Atlantic in the UK and they've only aired one episode so plenty of time to play catch UK folks.

I was relaxing after dinner and couldn't remember if I had seen it before -I am not a complete snob with films, I liked Iron Man, Mission Impossible, the Ocean's films even if Don Cheadle's 'English' accent was painful to listen to....in the end I watched Along Came a Spider; and for the record, Satantango is Hungarian and a collective farm -apart from the cows who occupy the first I think 8 minutes of the film, I did not see a single tractor and no, I am not heartbroken...

Tractors in films...there is a PhD topic in there somewhere -and no I don't intend to spend three years if my life doing it. And I now challenge you to watch Satantango, preferably over a wet weekend- it rains for most of the 7+ hours so that would help with the atmosphere... At least try Tarr's Werckmeister Harmonies.
re: Transformers: Is there a genre for fims with robots that isn't 'science fiction' or 'science fantasy'? I am trying to think back and I wonder if Frankenstein was the first 'robot'? Fritz Lang's Metropolis might have the first robot in film, not sure, but its the quantum leap in technology and the games industry that seems to have given robots a bigger profile in films. Doesn't make the films watchable.
Saw The Sum of All Fears last night, at times hysterically funny at other times just hysterical, but well-made for a film of that type and well acted too except for another daft accent: Ciaran Hinds pretending to be Rasshun, Alan Bates -a fine, dignified actor- viff a klotted kreme German akzent...not sure how the people of Baltimore felt when their city was obliterated. At least we will always have The Wire to remind us of it.

Frankenstein's monster could be considered a form of bio-mechanical robot.

The last movie I saw was "Attack the Block", an English sci-fi movie that was released in the U.K. and Ireland on May 13 and will be given limited release in the U.S. on July 29. This movie was shown in June at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was given a special showing last night (Fourth of July) at the New Beverly Theater in Hollywood. The director of the film, Joe Cornish, was there to give a Q&A after the film.
The story takes place in South London, London's roughest neighborhood consisting of housing projects and gangs. A group of teen muggers terrorize a young woman until a giant meteor lands in a car next to them. The woman escapes, the thugs look in the car to see what it is. A strange creature attacks the ringleader of the gang, but he fights him off. The creature scampers into an abandoned shed nearby. They follow it there and kill him, hauling it out of the shed like it's some trophy. They take it back home to their housing project where they show it off to neighbors. Meanwhile, the woman provides description of her attackers to police. The police show up at the project to make arrests. The woman in a nearby van identifies her attackers. Right after the police lock them up in the same van, more creatures attack the police, trapping both the mugging victim and the perps in the same van and the rest of the movie becomes a fight for survival.
"Attack the Block" pays homages to movies like "Assault on Precinct 13", "Die Hard" and "Tremors". The movie is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on July 29, probably in New York, Los Angeles and a few selected cities.
Update: In addition to New York and Los Angeles, "Attack the Block" will also open in Chicago, Austin, San Francisco, Seattle and Toronto.
