There's no doubt that Catholicism has very creepy aspects to it. A hatred of the flesh to start with, hatred of pleasure, traits that all of Christianity share to some extent, and a schizophrenic view of the world as being double; for Christians, you're always yourself and beside yourself, as body and soul... And this is why this stuff interrested me: it's like a fascinating expression of that creepiness, that strange realtion to the flesh and to death as being almost more desirable than life. Really odd...
