I realised when Terrence Malick won the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year that I had only seen one of his films, Badlands. So far he has only made five films, and as The Tree of Life will be released I think this week or next week (but in London probably) I bought all the available films and watched them twice, the one I can't get is Malick's short from 1969, Lanton Mills.

Malick's films are all beautiful to look at -a cynic might say so is National Geographic; but there are times, particularly in The Thin Red Line and The New World, when he has an ability to make you feel this is a world before humans, and there are times when one feels humans are making a mess of it, at other times lost in it, and again times when you feel nature is actually indifferent to people. Most of his films seem to focus on the limits of human behaviour, people who deliberately take themselves over the edge (Badlands, Days of Heaven), or who are driven there by circumstance (Thin Red Line, New World); and all but Days of Heaven are based on real events, although even Days of Heaven is historically specific and the moment before the Great War shapes its background. Malick's films need an essay, and this isn't it, but I look forward to The Tree of Life, although I expect it will disappear soon after its release, but will be on dvd.

Watched Frozen River which is somewhat reminiscent of Winter's Bone- excellent movie. And currently watching Days of Heaven which - aside from the cinematography and music score - isn't as impressive as I thought it would be. Maybe it's the Sam Shepard connection: his 'masterpiece' screenplay Paris, Texas was such a disappointment that I'm now prejudiced towards him.

Next will be Gods and Men.
