Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Dark Knight Rises...
Anne Hathaway's performance paled in comparison to MIchelle Pfeiffer's (and Michael Keaton was wayyy cuter anyway LOL) ...
but this was a great film!

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I’ve watched again the original “The Mechanic”, by Michael Winner, with Charles Bronson. Much better than the recent remake which, in my opinion, completely misses the mark. This story of a contract killer who just can’t bear the loneliness of his own life anymore. The music, the atmosphere, everything is better than in the remake.
The trailer doesn’t give the right idea of what the movie is. This “Killer of killers” subtitle was never used, to my knowledge, and doesn’t either have much to do with the story line of the film.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I had never seen the whole of True Romance before, and was not disappointed. There are weaknesses, the voice over at the start is a steal from Badlands, and not carried over into the rest of the film, and Arquette is not very good. The Tarantino dialogue for the most part fizzes along and the comic book overlay is very well done.
The Ides of March (George Clooney, 2011)
The main problem with this film is that we are no longer shocked to discover that politicians are ruthless; the film turns on an event about which most people would say 'so what'? Or the moment when Stephen tells the Governor that a President can start wars and bankrupt the country, but 'he can't fuck an intern'. Even though this may be true, it is not going to make a film, and as I now think even Ryan Gosling sends himself to sleep the word 'laconic' probably needs re-defining. Clooney does what he does in every film; the female interest is superficial and badly handled; Philip Seymour Hoffman effortless in what he does, but he is also repeating himself these days. The 'ides of March', the date on which Caesar was murdered, is ironic in this context -but it doesn't matter because the film is little better than a one-hour tv drama.

True Romance is a good one. Ever see Killing Zoe? Tarantino was just Executive Producer but it's still a good heist film in Paris. I remember the line, "In Paris it's good to smell like you've been fucking."

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Shame (Steve McQueen, 2011)
There have not been many serious and compelling films about sex -rather than films with a lot of sex in them, not the same. This study works because the two main characters seem to have emerged from a disturbed childhood, one is exuberant the other composed to the point of being emotionally arid -both have failed in relationships and engage in casual sex -or rather, the sister does: for him the sex is anything but casual, it is a manic compulsion that he uses to temporarily forget whatever it is that is eating away at him. The use of interiors reinforces the absence of depth in his life -with the one exception of the lush night club where his sister sings a melancholy version of the song New York, New York, and the only moment in the film when her brother shows any emotion and thus, temporarily, connects. Even the choice of Glenn Gould murdering Bach is apt as Gould strips out all the feeling and depth in Bach to impose his own meaningless indifference on the music. Brilliantly done.

Shadow Dancer - a new film about the IRA with the wonderful Andrea Risborough. It's a good film but not outstanding. Worth 90 minutes of your time though.
