Both of those were also good anti-war films Dan... but I still hold All Quiet' to be a pinnacle achievement.
I remember being very impressed by the Erich Maria Remarque novel, many years ago. I’ve only seen the old Lewis Milestone cinematic version of 1930. I think there was another in the 70s, but I assume you’re talking about the most recent one? the one from this year, by Mimi Leder? Is it that good? I’ll check it out!
Nope - I'm talking about the Lewis Milestone. Okay it shows its age - and in the end the book is finer - but it is magnificent. But I've not seen the more recent one.
The trouble with modern war films is that - by and large - they cannot resist the sentimental. Look at Finding Private Ryan or Warhorse. The last was nauseatingly sweet. (There are honourable exceptions - The Thin Red line and Platoon for instance).
It is a great movie. It’s remarkable how the unspeakable horror of the trench war has inspired only the little few to express it, and especially in literature, I find, but in such cases so pathetically and vividly (Celine’s “Journey to the end of the night” for instance, or Blaise Cendrars’ “The Cut hand”). And there’s much less historical accounts on it also compared to what was published on WW2. As if the men who had seen it were hardly able to even talk about it…
There are the great English poets of world war one of course (Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg, Siegfried Sassoon, Edward Thomas, Rupert Brook, Robert Graves etc) - and many fine novels including Pat Baker's powerful Regeneration trilogy. (Will check out the Cendrars' poem - thanks)
Fracture (2007)
I saw this on tv last night; the story is great for a film, or would be if it let the killer go loose, just to rub it in. The film is let down by another truly dismal performance from Ryan Gosling, so laid back he falls over his eyelashes, and someone should have told him to stop using his hands in so melodramatic a fashion in the trial scene. What his reputation is based on I do not know. I am not sure if Anthony Hopkins has left Hannibal Lecter behind, his 'evil' persona is by now repetitive and boring. And why a Maori actor is pretending to be American I don't know, his accent was wooden. Major disappointment.

From Gaspar Noe, who did Irreversible, one of my other favorite flicks.
Dino,
I love Irreversible. Enter the Void is on Netflix streaming, or if you need the physical media, I can highly recommend. If I'm wrong, I owe you a shot.
Couldn’t agree more. It does have a bit of suspense to it and it could have made a good film. Yet it is disappointing and leaves nonetheless as a whole an irrepressible impression of “déjà vu”… The characters seems like a bunch of unrealistic, ridiculous “show off”, like in so many more films.
A big, artificial, fastidious and bit pretentious movie that misses the target.
Don't quote me on this:
One of my teachers from school told us about a Latin phrase that roughly means cheap trick or stunt. It was coined by some ancient Roman Playrights about one of their own who in their eyes cheapened the art of penning plays, which were the old versions of TV and movies. Seems there was a custom in the Military that said when a General lost a battle and many Roman soldiers died the Commander also had to be executed, even if he behaved honorably. The play featured a scene where the General was being led away leaving his young son crying "where is my Father?
Now of course the audience was greatly moved, some to tears, and the writer of the Play was lauded as a genius, which really pissed off the other guys who took their Playwright real serious.
Now every ten years they survey the top 100 important critics and directors and ask them what they consider to be the greatest hits ever in the medium of film-making. This time Vertigo edged out Citizen Kaine. Most all of the movies chosen were pre-1969, except for Tarantino, whose movies were like all in the seventies. Even Bad News Bears!!! I really liked that movie.

How to Marry A Millionaire - Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall. A goofy old film but great fun.
Also The Millionairess - Peter Sellers and Sophia Lauren. A goofy film and not so much fun. Loren looks terrific.
This beautiful picture of the Golden Gate bridge, posted by Buttslinger, reminded me of a documentary I watched for a second time not too long ago, entitled “The Bridge”. Incredible and chilling at the same time. It’s not without any complaisance, but still very decently done, and quite respectfully. The director, Eric Steel captured a frightening number of suicides in one of the most dramatic film, in its quiet narrative, that I have ever seen. Not for the faint of heart. As I write these lines, I’m questioning myself as to the propriety of even mentioning it on such a public site. Maybe I shouldn’t. That’s how powerful I feel this is…

God forbid I bring any class to this forum, but curiosity makes me want to see what Directors consider the best film ever made.

Well I watched the Godfather Trilogy simply amazing.
Good one, Buttslinger. Here’s the trailer of another great Japanese film, Masaki Kobayashi’s “Seppuku”. Intense!

Not sure if there will be a different presentation in the hard copy of Sight and Sound in September, but there is no separate Directors list on the website.

Bourne Legacy.
Stupid movie.
Dark Knight Rises...
Anne Hathaway's performance paled in comparison to MIchelle Pfeiffer's (and Michael Keaton was wayyy cuter anyway LOL) ...
but this was a great film!
Not as good as the first but still some fun and bloody Italian Horror.

I’ve watched again the original “The Mechanic”, by Michael Winner, with Charles Bronson. Much better than the recent remake which, in my opinion, completely misses the mark. This story of a contract killer who just can’t bear the loneliness of his own life anymore. The music, the atmosphere, everything is better than in the remake.
The trailer doesn’t give the right idea of what the movie is. This “Killer of killers” subtitle was never used, to my knowledge, and doesn’t either have much to do with the story line of the film.

I had never seen the whole of True Romance before, and was not disappointed. There are weaknesses, the voice over at the start is a steal from Badlands, and not carried over into the rest of the film, and Arquette is not very good. The Tarantino dialogue for the most part fizzes along and the comic book overlay is very well done.

The Ides of March (George Clooney, 2011)
The main problem with this film is that we are no longer shocked to discover that politicians are ruthless; the film turns on an event about which most people would say 'so what'? Or the moment when Stephen tells the Governor that a President can start wars and bankrupt the country, but 'he can't fuck an intern'. Even though this may be true, it is not going to make a film, and as I now think even Ryan Gosling sends himself to sleep the word 'laconic' probably needs re-defining. Clooney does what he does in every film; the female interest is superficial and badly handled; Philip Seymour Hoffman effortless in what he does, but he is also repeating himself these days. The 'ides of March', the date on which Caesar was murdered, is ironic in this context -but it doesn't matter because the film is little better than a one-hour tv drama.

True Romance is a good one. Ever see Killing Zoe? Tarantino was just Executive Producer but it's still a good heist film in Paris. I remember the line, "In Paris it's good to smell like you've been fucking."

There have not been many serious and compelling films about sex -rather than films with a lot of sex in them, not the same. This study works because the two main characters seem to have emerged from a disturbed childhood, one is exuberant the other composed to the point of being emotionally arid -both have failed in relationships and engage in casual sex -or rather, the sister does: for him the sex is anything but casual, it is a manic compulsion that he uses to temporarily forget whatever it is that is eating away at him. The use of interiors reinforces the absence of depth in his life -with the one exception of the lush night club where his sister sings a melancholy version of the song New York, New York, and the only moment in the film when her brother shows any emotion and thus, temporarily, connects. Even the choice of Glenn Gould murdering Bach is apt as Gould strips out all the feeling and depth in Bach to impose his own meaningless indifference on the music. Brilliantly done.

Shadow Dancer - a new film about the IRA with the wonderful Andrea Risborough. It's a good film but not outstanding. Worth 90 minutes of your time though.

My wife got me to watch "Howard the Duck" with her last night. She is one of the handful of people who somehow enjoy this movie. I didn't think it could possibly be as bad as I had heard it was all these years, but I was wrong. It was MUCH worse than the already low expectations I had for it. This movie is so bad, it makes "Freddy Got Fingered" look like "Citizen Kane" in comparison.
my friends and i just completed and alien quadrilogy friday night...all in a row. wow..Alien 3 and 4 sucked compared to the others.
Today- king of new York. How much would that cast cost now?

Someone gave me a copy of Mongol (2007) a film which claims to tell the early life of one the world's most effective mass murderers, Genghiz Khan. The film is mainly notable as a superb advert for Mongolia, should anyone want to go there on holiday. The story, insofar as there is one, is of no importance. Mind you, at two hours or so, it seems a but much to say 'sit back and enjoy the scenery'. The battle scenes, as usual, are no different from every battle scene shot for films since the silent era, I don't know why anyone bothers to do them.
