I hope you don't the UK is all like that movie Yvonne.
I kinda liked that movie. A bit unrealistic but it's nice to see a movie where the tough guys are white and have silly accents. I don't think the UK is all like that movie,, I believe Canterbury is quite nice.
I think the UK is portrayed more like Midsomer Murders, a bit boring,,,lol
Midsomer Murders... lol.... one of the most silly programmes on UK TV. And yes Canterbury is lovely, You should make a pilgrimage there sometime. Great cathedral. its where thomas a'becket was killed at the order of the king.
A propos this site--"Road To Perdition"

This week I watched Source Code, and Inglourious Basterds.
I can't vouch for the science of Source Code and worked out before the end what Jake Gyllenhall's status was, but I thought it was well done if not as good as Vantage Point as far this genre goes where the narrative is spliced into several different sequences which range back and forth through time from different perspectives. An entertaining film that gets 8/10.
Tarantino hasn't made a truly good film since Pulp Fiction, this particular film is incoherent and lacking in depth. Entertainment value 4/10, Christoph Waltz makes this, otherwise its of little interest.
The Descendants - George Clooney's latest showcase...........was brilliant.....maybe a little over-wrought at times but beautiful to see and to hear. Not a lot of flash or wasted scenes. Not much more you can ask for in a movie IMO.
J. Edgar - If Eastwood was trying to convey the atmosphere that Hoover created and that created him then he succeeded (based on what I read about Hoover). Lots of shadows, darkness, and muted colours created a definite air of oppression and single-mindedness. A good movie and - I think - at times very good performance by Leonardo DiCaprio but far from enjoyable.
Smurfs
On the wkend: The Green Hornet. Unwatchable. To me Seth Rogen was all wrong for the part. He was terrible. Cameron Diaz [who I like] was merely going through the motions. So, I wouldn't recommend it. Read a book instead -- ha ha! Or: watch the show from the 60s with the legendary Bruce Lee.

Outstanding story about the great Brazilian Grand Prix driver. Recommended even if you are not a F1 fan.

A few minutes of Human centipede after the praise lavished here by others. No No No No No. Just plan vile
Has anyone seen The Artist? It has rave reviews.
Yes I saw it a few months ago. Best I can say is the dog is cute. Otherwise i found it rather pointless.
I just saw The Help. The costumes were amazing.
Actually, recommending a film: Margin Call....

Raging Bull, haven't seen it for years; is this de Niro's greatest performance? The weakness of the film is typical of the biographical film that suddenly leaps forward in years, particularly after La Motta's retirement and move to Floida. Overall, ranks with Mean Streets as Scorsese's best film.
:wink:PRIEST not to bad but not enough blood and guts and any great film must have blood and guts
J Edgar - directed by Clint Eastwood. A noble attempt to show the powerfully inhibiting affections of suppressed feelings in the life of one of the oddest and most powerful Americans of the last century. Filmed in crepuscular shades and ploddingly acted. All in all an effort to sit through to the end - and as a bio pic burdened by terrible prosthetics.
i saw both mission impossible 4 and sherlock holmes 2 this weekend.
i didn't care to see either movie....i just had to see the IMAX promo and new trailer for the dark knight rises.
"Moneyball" - a career defining performance by Brad Pitt. As a Brit I know virtually nothing about baseball so some of the fine detail of this film was completely incomprehensible to me. But it was nevertheless compelling and brilliantly played and paced.
i am sorry to say that if you saw moneyball and that's your impression, it must have been a terrible movie because matt damon wasn't in it. it starred brad pitt.
the problem is that i've read billy beane's book and as a baseball fan, reject the idea of sabermetrics as the main way to run a team, so i couldn't bring myself to pay $13 for this movie.
Whoops!!!! I meant Brad Pitt. Thanks Rally. It was early when i posted that lol
no problem.
fyi...though not a film for everyone...i went to a screening of extremely loud and incredibly close last night.
it isn't a great movie because ultimately, the kid really is just on a meaningless treasure hunt but is good wholesome entertainment if you don't like movies with guns, boobs and comedy. i'd recommend it for any older forum browsers for a discount afternoon matinee. The price of a movie ticket in nyc is $13 now...I wouldn't pay that to see it.
I have a preview DVD of it. So might watch it tonight. Isn't setting it around 9/11 a bit offensive/ It's based on a book by Jonathan Safran Foer isn't it.
soul surfer it was based on a true story and i balled my eyes out. Soul Surfer Official Trailer - YouTube
well, it is based on a book that got mixed reviews...but more for his lack of character depth and thin plot than the subject matter.
as a new yorker, born and bred, who had 2 cousins and a close friend get out of the towers on 9/11, i'm not offended. this movie/book basically tells the story of a kid that lost his father on 9/11 and then deals with it. its been 10 years...its ok to make a movie like this now. it is afterall, just a family movie.
that said, i also am in the boat of people that are a bit tired of all the crap surrounding the towers...yes, people died but at some point, we have to be able to admit that it is just part of our history and we are free to use it in film/books as backdrops for stories.
High Sierra last night, as I am working through a box of Bogart films. What I like about this is the way in which Roy Earle is released from one prison at the start, and effectively ends up in another at the end; and his inability to control either of his two immediate environments -the respectable family from Ohio trying to make it in California, and the crooks he does the job with. The dog, however, was a major weakness; it serve a purpose in the story, but is an overlay and for that reason unnecessary.
