Always aUnicorn... you can thumbs down any music you like!
Better still why not create a new metal only music thread for you and Dino and the few folk who really enjoy that music in which no one else will post? Just a suggestion.

Yep - lots of it. Once as a guest of honour of some big people in Bahrain i was invited an evening of music and comedy. The music was great. The comedy - which went on and on and on (in Arabic )- was unendurable. Some if involved throwing dwarves around.

Does this qualify as "world music"? Julie Fowlis's glorious version of the Beatles' Blackbird sung in Scots gaelic. And I'm pleased to say that Julie is every bit as nice as she sounds. A lovely person.

Paul Robeson was shamefully persecuted in the US by the authorities and especially Hoover's FBI for daring to stand up for the rights of blacks and workers. Thankfully he was accepted and applauded by working people in the UK and especially in Wales, where he appeared somewhat improbably as a miner in a film about the Welsh coalfields and then made a tour of the region, during which he often expressed common cause with the miners.
My dear friend Martyn Joseph wrote a great song about Robeson's visits to Wales. Here it is, apologies for the poor quality recording, but it's the best I could find. Hopefully the passion of Martyn's performance will explain why over here we call him the Welsh Springsteen! And he and I play the same model of Lowden guitar.

I recently spent some time discovering Eartha Kitt: her story and her talents. Wonderful woman who tried to speak out for Americans against the Vietnam War and for her efforts was similarly ostracized, publicly shamed and driven in to exile in the UK where she was apparently welcomed with open arms. In those days I assume the UK public was less inclined to be blind followers of American political doctrine? Canada too used to welcome 'dissident' Americans but these days they are quickly wrapped and shipped back.
Here's some Eartha!

I certainly agree about Eartha - and she was pretty much an honorary Brit!
Harold Wilson who was the Labour Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 famously and very courageously stood down fierce pressure from LBJ for the UK to send troops into Vietnam.
Can't imagine that happening now, sadly.

Thank you! I LOVE Bruce Cockburn. He followed me one year on Stage 2 at Cambridge and we had a drink and a great chat afterwards. Wonderful guy.
You and I know that this is arguably his best-known song, but most folks here won't have heard of him let alone the song. Seriously powerful. I love his guitar style, especially the explosively percussive right-hand work.

Glad to hear that about Bruce - that the man reflects the music. When I first heard his music back in the 80s I can't say I was enthralled but with age comes wisdom and the ability to distill the finer things out of life and his music turns out to be one of those things. Such powerful lyrics, balanced voiced, and yes that guitar work is sweet. Would love to chat with him - what a life you lead my friend!

Here's the man who's been my inspiration right from the start. People know him mostly for one song, then hopefully move on to the wonderful colours in his songs, but not many know him for his guitar skills. This is a pretty good illustration. The one and only Ralph McTell - and again one of the nicest and most unassuming guys you could ever hope to meet. Hoping to make his 70th birthday concert at the end of this year.

Spectacular album! I bought this on CD back in 1990 and couldn't really get into some of the tracks at that time - thought the Dylan and Sam Cooke covers were stellar - but over the years i have grown to appreciate each and every song. Something new to discover every time I listen to it.

Dino...I can't quite see why you want to post that music here (much of which is great) when there is an existing music thread for any type of music Iin which you post lots of stuff) and a new one i just made for you to post any music you want. The whole idea of this thread, created by our mutual friend Robert Louis, is music which is not cranked up loud guitar based stuff. So much as I love hendrix and Clapton and even some of the harder stuff you've posted (Reveren Horton Heat for instance) this is not the strand for it. There are plenty of places for that. it's like someone posting pictures of girls with big hard-ons in a thread which is what was the most recent movie you saw? What is the whole point of having a thread defined as being one thing if people just post anything. Sorry to be a pain.

in fairness I think Dino was trying to post stuff that in his view is non-metal. Had never heard of Joe Bonamassa and glad to have had had a listen so it's appreciated. I have to admit that if he had posted it in the "what are you listening to now" thread I might not have listened only because he tends to post a lot of really hard stuff in there and I don't listen to much of that stuff (funny how our subconcious prejudices kick in as easily as they do). I for one would appreciate some more of Dino recommendations as it pertains to this thread.

Well, there's been a largely good-natured spat on this thread today.
When I started it the intention was to create a place on HA where those of us who like music, but specifically don't like metal, could post anything else that they wanted to share. I didn't want to be prescriptive beyond that general intent, so we've had everything from Miles Davis to Beethoven to Alban Berg to Pete Seeger to BB King and back again. It's been a good ride.
As it happens, I really like Joe Bonamassa and enjoyed the tracks that Dino posted; he's an innovator and a superb musical technician who is seeking to redefine the possibilities of the electric guitar. I admire him for that. He's not Hendrix but he's pretty good.
And there's been lots of electric music here. I've posted lots of my favourite era, west coast rock from the late 60s. It was the move into increasingly pompous prog rock in the 70s and then the umpteen subdivisions of metal that I've never enjoyed.
So this thread is and should remain a broad church for folks to post what they like.
Except thrash metal, please.
That is all.
Now, to show you what I mean, here's Tiny Tim.

Absolutely. I'll never dislike ole Prospie no matter how many soap boxes he tries to prop himself up on. At his age his prospie is probably tougher than a two dollar steak anyway.
Glad you liked some of the tunes, Robert. I like to share. I found Bonamassa by mistake checking out some Glenn Hughes and wanted to pass it on. His stuff is a slam dunk that everyone seems to like. All the fuss was worth it then.
Honestly, if I was invading this thread I would do it while you all sleep and be thoroughly hardcore.

Meanwhile this isn't vey good but it is interesting. Anyone who has listened to Bob Dylan's newest album "Tempest" will know that the title tack is a 14 minute long song all about the Titanic. (Bob specialises in very long songs - ever since "Sad Eyed lady of The Lowlands") from Blonde On Blonde. I like Dylan's Titanic song. But then i came across this - from 2008. (The Carter Family's own recording doesn't seem to be on Youtube)

What a horrible recording! Not only does the Concertgebouw sound crabbed and cold, the boy soprano is at times ragged, the voice doesn't have any depth. Although Mahler did consider using a boy soprano, because of the innocence implied in the verse, it doesn't work. If you must have the real thing with Bernstein, and in general his Mahler is good but not rich in subtlety then his recording with Reri Grist works, as she was a spinto with a light refreshing voice and does Mahler proud. I saw her a few times in the 1970s and she remains one of my favourite singers.
Mahler - Symphony n°4 - NYP / Bernstein - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAkrnXNrvKA)
Mahler completed the work at his summer home in Meiernigg ion the Worthersee n 1901 and conducted the premiere in Munich in November of that year, where it was booed with much enthusiasm; in Frankfurt they hissed so loud during the performance it sounded like wind.
Wilhelm Ritter, writing of the premiere in Munich said:
"I felt as if I had been reveling in an unavowable way in a sort of musical Black Mass...indeed Satan and all his pomps and works have never chosen a better home in an orchestra"...
Mahler used to rise just before dawn on his summer break to begin composing in his lakeside hut; the maid was not allowed to enter but had to leave his breakfast outside, after which work he would join Alma and the children in the lake. He was a strong swimmer.

I wanted to post a recording with a boy soprano but couldn't find the version that I have on youtube - it's a Slovenian orchestra with an excellent treble, certainly better than the Concertgebouw version. And I tend to agree with your views on Bernstein and Mahler. After his fine recording of the 1st it's all downhill.
After amassing a mongrel set of Mahler's symphonies, amongst which Rattle features prominently and favourably, I bought a boxed set of Gerghiev's recordings last year. While it has some of his usual eccentric tics, as a consistent representation of Mahler's intense musicality it's rather good.

Heard a stunning rendition of it at the Barbican in York last month. It's stirring to say the least.
Here's another well-known piece by the Finnish genius, whose seven symphonies, imh, are as fine a body of work as any of the post-romantic composers. While he remained steadfastly within the confines of traditional notation, he forms an accessible bridge towards the modernists.

Thank you. This one, imo, is even better. My old pal Steve Knightley of Show of Hands introduced me to the song a few years back, and although I very rarely play covers these days, I've made an exception for this one, it's one of those songs where you get a pause before the applause.

Second, the incomparable Barbara, singing from the edge of reason...(and apologies for the dire adverts that get stuck onto these clips)...

“Beware Of The Beautiful Stranger” by Pete Atkin. Atkin wrote the music with words by the Australian born Clive James, the poet, author, TV presenter and critic. The duo wrote a large number of songs together when they both lived in Cambridge which were collected on a series of albums issued in the 1970s and 80s. Atkin then quit music to work as a radio producer with the BBC.

Eddi is lucky, not only a great voice, but two of the greatest songwriters working with her. One is Boo Hewerdine, the other?
Robert Burns.

Though not great, I am a member of the British public who has never heard this song before, and certainly hope never to hear it again.
As for counter-tenors singing Bach -not in the Passions, please. But this secular cantata -the Trauerode BWV 198 does have this aria which requires amazing breath control, exquisitely sung by Damien Guillon.

This is a song called “A ittle lamb Has Commenced Bleating’ by a Bulgarian singer called Nadka Karadzhova, who died two years ago. A truly remarkable sound –it is known as open-throatsinging. Since then the choral version of this type of singing has been introduced to a wider audience by the recordings of Bulgarian choirs released under the “Le Mystere Voix de Bulgares” label. I’ve also included one of their first recordings. This form of singing is unique to Bulgaria

Thanks ,Prospero , that was especially apt for Memorial Day holiday .
I also enjoyed hearing the 'Bulgarian Voices" again.
In the 1980's I happened into a subway station in lower Manhattan ,late at night, and was lucky enough to come upon a group taking advantage of the acoustics to practice their overtone chanting. I was transported! It could have been a cathedral rather than a subway tunnel.
As you may know ,'throat singing' and overtone chanting came to the publics attention here in the States in the 70's and 80's in part due to the efforts of Nobel Prize physicist Richard Feynman. He struggled to get permission to visit Tuva ,in Inner Mongolia ,which was then part of the Soviet Union. Due to the Cold War , however , it was very difficult.
"Tuva or Bust" became his motto. The letter , finally granting him permission to visit Tuva , arrived in the mail the day after he died in 1988.
Fortunately , his friend Ralph Leighton ,and other Caltech associates were able to bring Tuvan throat singers here to the US and they took the music world by storm including Carnegie Hall . I was lucky enough to meet them all here , in person ,when Ralph Leighton arranged an event at Caltech in Feynman's honor.
