Another much-covered Dylan song. This is my favourite version except for one by a mate who frustratingly has never recorded it.

Nanci Griffith from the Transatlantic Sessions. And what a band, Danny Thompson and Jerry Douglas.

I used to sing this when I was just starting out. Pick out the prettiest girl in the room, sing it just for her, and chances were always 50/50 or better....

Love it then and love it now. And studying JT's guitar style gave me all I needed to know about slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs. Met him once too, but that's a tale for another day.

Very old and very well known one.
A few years ago, Gordon Lightfoot participated to a huge rock concert that regrouped dozens of rock bands. It was heavy and swinging, with loud instruments and crazy guitar. When his turn came, the old guy started by saying: "And now, for a brief musical interlude", before starting to sing... :)

I worship Gordon Lightfoot. A brilliant songwriter with a simply beautiful voice and perfect diction. Don't know what you think as a Canadian, Dan, but while there are many wonderful songwriters from the Great White North - Joni, Neil, Ian Tyson, Bruce Cockburn, K D Lang and all the rest - none sums up the spirit of your nation quite as well as GL, with the possible exception of Stan Rodgers.

Here's the best example I can think of. I used to do it solo on the 12-string, bit of a show-stopper!

I love this song! Yes, I like every one of them! But I don't know them as much as I wish I did. You know, here in Canada we have what we call a situation of "Two solitudes", as Hugh MacLennan expressed it in a novel he entitled this way. You have great, great poet singers on one side, and a whole different range on the other, in French. I won't post any such songs on this thread, as hardly anyone could appreciate, but if you will, I'll pm you a few sample, knowing that you can understand French.

So, I'm going to try to give some good samples of the other music from Canada, from French culture in the country. It's very different. Sometimes the melody is almost neglected to favour the lyrics. It's generally very poetic, often very dramatic and intense, melancholic and sad, and some other times full of hope and joy. I'm sorry for those of you who do not understand French; I suggest you try listening to the tone and let yourself be carried by the melodies.
I'll start with a little hymn by a poet, Raymond Lvesque, who put this one in music. It's simple, both in the lyrics and in the melody, but it's designed to be candid and to go right to the emotion.
Quand les hommes vivront d'amour par Raymond Levesque - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb_4tQ90Muk)

Next, another simple but magnificent song by George D'Or; it's the poem of a man who was gone to work on one of these dams we have here, very, very far up North, where men were leaving to work for months.
Then the same song interpreted by another great, great and beloved singer from Montreal, Leonard Cohen.

Another poet song writer, singer, Richard Desjardins. He not only writes lyrics that are emotionally charged, but he mannages to deliver these songs in a unique way. One of the most intense singer I know. Pretty simple but also very beautiful melodies.
Now, Desjardins is a guy from way up there is the north and his accent is quite strong though.

A Hopi word - it means the world is out of shape... is disordered.
Astute people The Hopi.

According to Hopi Dictionary: Hopikwa Lavytutuveni, the Hopi word koyaanisqatsi (Hopi pronunciation: [kojɑːnisˈkɑtsi])[21] is defined as "life of moral corruption and turmoil" or "life out of balance".[22] The prefix koyaanis– means "corrupted" or "chaotic", and the word qatsi means "life" or "existence",[23] literally translating koyaanisqatsi as "chaotic life".[22] The film also defines the word as "crazy life", "life in turmoil", "life disintegrating", and "a state of life that calls for another way of living".[24]

Great track from Warren Zevon, Dream. Very under-rated and died too soon.

Here's the perfect marriage - Sondheim's unique way with a lyric, and Judy Collins' crystalline delivery.

By the way Shadowland was written by Dick Hyman, the amazing jazz musician who scored most of Woody Allen's films. Laing added the lyrics - and Dick had to sue her when her album came out to get his dues. he is a personal friend.

I wonder what the backstory is to not paying royalties for the music. K.D. a;ways portrays as an ethical person so it's surprising to hear she cheated someone. Unlike let's say Clapton stealing from Bob Marley, Muddy Waters, and the rest!

Before there was K.D. there was Ferron
