John Stewart... saw him once at the Bluebird cafe in Nashville. Terrific gig.
This song is a sort of reference, for me, to all the nonsense in the Politics strand.

Great song. He's sadly underrated and of course he's no longer with us either.

No Way!
I know the Stones were infatuated with the FBB and yeah their music (at least what I listened to) was innovative for the times but something in their delivery just doesn't do it for me.
I think Jagger's vocals were stronger than Gram Parsons and this song really highlights that difference.

We'll just have to agree to differ on that one, Dream. I always felt that Gram had a plaintive, keening quality to his vocal work that marked him out as really special. I love Mick's vocals generally, but he never works for me on the slower and more gentle songs.
In the meantime, perhaps we can agree that this band of four Canadians and one son of Arkansas made music just about as fine as you can get.

You were talking about covers. A lot of Robbie's songs work really well solo on acoustic, like Rockin' Chair, Lonesome Susie, even Cripple Creek. There's never been any group like The Band for me. The best ever. And Robbie is a brilliant songwriter with a terrific grasp of history.
But I haven't done a cover except as an encore for about ten years now.

Robbie is a great songwriter. I find that the guys who focus on the content of the song, the lyrics, seem to create music that stands well as solo performances. Neil Young is another and of course all the great folk/rock musicians like John Prine, Townes van Zandt, Steve Earle, etc.

I agree - can't listen if a song lyric is just cliches or without purpose, which is why 99% of the popular stuff leaves me cold. And that means speak clearly too. I earnestly hope that people get that from my music.
A few great Brit acoustic writers for you to Google - Ralph McTell, Richard Thompson, Steve Knightley, Martyn Joseph..... It could be a very long list!

This song is something of a heartbreaker if you know the story behind the tune. Will Jennings wrote the song about Valerie Carter, who was a fellow songwriter and a backup singer, who fell into drugs and had her life pretty much ruined. that makes the song pretty much a plea for her to turn her life around.

It is always a mistake to perform Rachmaninov songs with orchestra, they lose their delicacy and subtlety, but most of all, lose the bell-like tone of the piano which was so hugely important to Rachmaninov, in whose music whom bells are symbolic as well as musical. By contrast, consider Richter and his wife in one of Rachmaninov's most exquisite songs with as rich a postlude as you are likely to hear in a song.

Thank you for that Rachmaninov Stavros...one of the most perfect of his songs I think, setting the Pushkin in a heartbreaking way. I am afraid i still cleave to the Anna Netrebko recording of it - with orchestra. (I will see if I can post it - if I didn't already) But this is deeply wonderful too.

A couple of fine performances of two of my favourite piano concertos to start the week.
And yes, that is Rachmaninov's Third piano concerto, not the much better known and much overplayed Second. Altogether sprightlier and more mature imho.

Metal, in its various guises, swamps every other genre in the What Are You Listening To Now thread.
I'd be up for a thread which caters for music which depends slightly less on volume, guitar pyrotechnics and satanism, and more on melody and intelligible lyrics.
I really hope I'm just overreacting here because I'm new, but it that really how you feel about metal?
I would really love the opportunity to open your ears to some music that is, while still 100% metal, very melodic, perfectly intelligible, and contains 0% satan. I understand that's not the point of this thread, so I'm just going to quietly leave these here in the corner

I really hope I'm just overreacting here because I'm new, but it that really how you feel about metal?

Thanks for your sensitivity! I started this thread because the other music thread here was about 99% metal, and mostly of the death/thrash/WTF kind.
As a self-employed musician myself in the acoustic singer-songwriter style, I just felt that we needed a bit of balance, so we've had everything here from jazz to classical to blues to acoustic and round again.
So, in the spirit of your offering, I'll certainly give those songs a listen.
And thanks for the Stan Rogers clip. Love his songs. I suppose you know North West Passage? Goosebump time!
And above all, enjoy the forum! :)

Stan Rogers was altogether awesome. Such a tragic loss and so young.
And WHAT a voice. One of the very best.
I have a couple of his albums and one that his brother Garnett did with an old pal of mine from Scotland, Archie Fisher, showcasing Stan's songs. Terrific, stirring songwriter with a great ear for melody too.
As you're in Canada, Derek, seek out David Francey. You won't regret it!

Anecdote time: This song was originally meant to be a comedic piss-take of the whole Rocker scene, but in fact the Rockers adopted it as a sort of anthem, and it could be heard blaring from juke boxes in all the caffs in the land, from the Ace in London to the Busy Bee in Watford, and all points in between!

This is a fantastic version of "The House Of The Rising Sun" by Dave van Ronk. He heard it from an unnacompanied Appalachian singer and came up with the chord sequece which is now famous. Bob Dylan heard him singing it in a New York coffee house and stole it for his first album. But Dave van Vonk's version is better I think. Van Ronk inspired the new Coen brother's movie "Inside Llewyn Davis."

This is sung by a Turkish born Jewish singer called Yasmin Levy - not Natascha Atlas as the label suggests. it is in Ladino, medieval Jewish Sephardic language from Spain.

P, I strongly recommend that you read "Andalus" by Jason Webster. Gets into the soul of modern Spain and its paradoxical desire to shake of its moorish roots while continuing to embrace them.
He also wrote "Duende", a stunning account of the lives of the real flamenco singers and dancers - it was serialised on Radio 4.
And I'm currently reading "Guerro", his book about the Spanish Civil War and Spain's continuing inability to come to terms with the horrors of the Franco regime. So far, it's every bit as good as Giles Tremlett's "Ghosts of Spain."

Here's my friend Joe Solo from his album of Spanish Civil War songs "No Pasaran", about a Brit and a Russian fighting for the Republicans, whose only common language was backgammon. Terrific lyrics.

Tremlett's book was very good.
Oddly Boris Johnson, of all people, did a good TV documentary a few years ago which dealt, in part, with the Spanish refusal to own their Moorish heritage while using it still to make tourist dollars.

I'm a sucker for a beautiful woman who can make beautiful music. And Aziza Mustafa Zadeh certainly does that. Hardly a household name the Azerbaijani/Azeri jazz musician is very popular in France and Germany. I've never managed to see her in concert (I'm not sure if she has ever played in the UK). Music from Azerbaijan is rare but this might prompt you to listen to more.

That was certainly beautiful music. One of the few times I've actually bothered to listen to a recommended song from beginning to end.
Music from central Asia intrigues me - the influences are so diverse just like the people themselves.
I was recently introduced to the music of an Uzbek singer - Sevara Nazarkhan - by an Uzbek friend of mine. Hope you enjoy.

Glad to have provided you with some new music. I know Severa Nazarkhan's music slightly but not heard that track before. Aziza is actually the daughter of a notable Azeri composer and what i love about her music is the blend of eastern and western modes to produce something beautiful and strange.
There is a lot of her stuff on Youtube and i have all her recordings - about six CDs in all.
