at the risk of taking a shallow look at a very deep and complex issue here is my take on much of this:

as someone who grew up in the 60's and 70's, and who has been involved in this kind of abuse them self as a teen and 20-something, and who has lost so many friends to this kind of behavior, i have tried to explain to many of them that they are not going to like the end results and they will have long-term effects on their lives. most look at me as if i am lying and simply patronizing them and the rest just tell me what i perceive to be their problem is not, they are on the straight and narrow and simply("just tired" or "a bit off" for the day) and that i should not meddle in their lives. it is so easy to spot who is and on which substance that they might as well have signs hanging around their necks.

i know that when someone is doing these things you can not do much but point out to them that you can see their problem, you relate to their life as it is at the moment, you are their to help if they want to make that move/choice and that you hope they find their way back to who they were. some do, most do not.

i married a genetic who had worked in Patpong for years and one day she went back to visit her friends in the bar and got into this behavior pattern. the way i found out about it was that a Thai friend of mine had a brother in the Ban Rak Police department who had seen my wife's name on a list of users who were going to be squeezed for information about the supply chain in Patpong. luckily i was able to get her to stop seeing these girls and stay home long enough to kick. she had only been hanging with them and chipping for about a week, so it was not so hard to do. the hard part was convincing her that despite being a peon she was going to get pinched and tossed. luckily when all was said and done she never went back and has been clean for 10 years now.

most are not smart enough, aware enough or care about themselves enough to make that change. their social status, perceived or otherwise, makes it hard for them to care and all they want, and all they keep perusing with this sort of behavior is to forget about their situation which only gets worse and keeps them in that cycle.

all anyone can do is try to be a friend and help them to help themselves, then if they reject that help, leave them to their own devices to discover the low point of their life in order to pick themselves up again, if they can, and start over.

in the old days it was booze and pills and now this generation has more powerful substances to deal with. but regardless of all that, they all still think they are the strong one who can control it all, and in reality, they can not.

it is too bad that the age of youth is wasted on the young ...

but this is all just my opinion.

The security issue is for the hotel not for the occupant. If she or he takes something from the hotel or damages something. The hotel will call the police and the police will persue the matter. If you have been ripped off however the police will do nothing. I know of a couple of cases where a person had traceable items stolen (cellphone, camera, watch) and the person noticed shortly after the girl left. They called the police. The police had the girls name and a copy of her ID and where she worked on the street. They did nothing. He saw her the next night on the same spot.

This is another reason to stay away from street walkers. You have a little more pull if you take her out of a bar. You can go back to the bar with tourist police. You might or might not get your stuff back, but the bar hates to have police scrutiny. The girl might loose her job or be suspended.

i do not think you can paint all situations with that brush, and my 20 years in this country prowling the streets and working in hotels, in all major tourist destinations except Chiang Mai, tells me it helps more often than not. but that would only be my experience. it is also my experience that what ever happens, it is typical to most places in regard to this issue. some you win, and some you lose.

IMHO: BKK is number 1 nationwide for variety and "professionalism", lots of good, clean and cheap short-time hotels and good food. easy to get around and easy to find the girls.

for me Pattaya is OK, but they are much more aggressive (my opinion) and the scene is not as centralized. Pattaya is fun during the day however and there are many activities to take part in. food is OK and lodging is priced a bit higher than it used to be but OK.

further, Pattaya is a 2 hour trek from BKK and that is also a pain if time is of the essence. bus is about 200 baht and taxi is about 1500+.

but, as i said, these are only my opinions of what is out there.

well i have now been to Guess Bar 4 or 5 times and i must say it is one of the best in regard to girls with great attitudes, fine legs, and that ever twinkling eye i find so alluring.

most of the girls on team Guess are emotionally mature (yet in their early 20's), smart, talkative and tons of fun. it would also seem that the going rate as quoted by everyone is always the same, 1,500 baht short time plus the 500 baht bar fine. very reasonable and it also leaves room for you to tip for good behavior, not go broke, and score some points if you intend on going back.

no idea why i like to take pictures of their shoes, because it really has nothing to do with a sexual reference to feet for me (although some find feet and shoes to be quite erotic). i just like the looking at the pictures. makes my mind conjure up scenarios of all sorts. at least in my mind that happens.

Hi bkkldby - I be sure that it was nice evening there in Suhkumvit Soi 4 last night. Still I was never in Guess bar on there new place, only in the former place from Jay`s bar.
About the contest there I had read some days before, but had forgotten the date.
But yesterday I had phoned with my LB-friend in BKK and there she told me that she sitting with some friends in her condo and watching the contest. Then she switched on her webcam and I could see a little bit simular like you when they posing and so in front of the tv.

due to the fact that Guess Bar is set back from the road and stuck in the corner of a large parking area i figured some folks might be able to use this "guide post" (see picture below post). when coming from nana plaza or the sukhumvit road side enter the parking lot when you see this sign, walk to your left, then turn right and guess bar is on the left.

if anyone likes to sauna the best place i have found is on Sukhumvit Soi 22 and it is called silom sauna. this may be a bit confusing to those who know BKK's streets because silom is a main avenue far from Sukhumvit Soi 22. the reason being the original sauna was on silom. even the silom sauna branch in pattaya, on soi 4 near Sabailand , is called silom sauna.

these are not gay establishments, on the contrary, the clientèle in BKK is predominantly thai businessmen, koreans, a few japanese, arabs, indians, and europeans. it is not fancy but it is an awesome sauna. also a great herbal steam room, a killer polar plunge pool and a small lap pool. they also have some aerobic machines and weight machines. massages are available from the women out front, and most will offer you some hanky panky too.

the sauna is open from 12 to 12 and the rate is 160 baht for 12 hours of use. that's right $5.50 USD. they provide towels, suits, fresh fruit, ice tea and herbal drinks, all the necessary toiletries and a "lounge" area where you can watch TV and videos or crash for an hour or two. yup, all that for $5.50.

i mention this because if you are staying in a smaller hotel that has no gym or sauna, and you wish to use this sort of facility, it is centrally located, CHEAP, and a good relaxing time. it is barebones, old and delapitated, but if you like to sweat, enjoy a bit of local color, this is the place. at times you will be sitting in the sauna with yakuza, or korean and thai mafia dudes who are there, interesting people to hang with when you are naked and sweaty. :shock:

if you opt for the massage be aware that whatever the flat rate is for the style of massage you request, any hanky panky will cost you 1,000 baht in tip. but i think when you see these women who offer these services most will only go for a massage and save the hanky panky for a much better venue. after my one and only massage there i opt for going to a massage only joint after the sauna, there are many good ones on soi for in nana, and there is one directly across the street form guess bar.

a typical saturday or sunday for me is 1st sauna, 2nd massage, then 3rd guess ... they open at 5 or 6 pm on weekends so that works out just fine.

if you are taking the BTS Skytrain get off at Phrom Phong station (E5), exit through the Onut end on the even side of the street, go down and tell the motorcycle taxi dude to take you to silom sauna, this costs 20 Baht only, or 66 cents.

BTW: they also serve standard coffee shop food at silom if you really are hungry after you sweat and cannot wait to go elsewhere.

well, i was out on Sukhumvit road about a block from nana plaza when i spied a girl i have always been curious about but never had approached, Nadia form Cascade bar.

the law stipulates 1, and they were staying open until 2, but now the local precinct has allowed 5 am closing. i do not know how long that will last, but hopefully for awhile.

the girls have mixed feelings abut this, needless to say, because now they must be in-house and dancing for 3 hours more for the same pay.

this could boost the entire neighborhood as all Soi Cowboy and Patpong punters will start to gravitate to Nana and the Sukhumvit area late at night. the street scene should also get a boost if this influx actually happens from other areas and if it is sustained.

i also heard that tonight, at 4 am, all the girls and service staff form all three areas will be marching in protest of the 1 am statute. this is to take place on Silom, which is where Patpong is located.

the idea is to tell the govt. that if the law states 1 am, and this oh so strict administration feels they must enforce the law, then why not change it, make it later like most international cities, and then no one is in violation and business improves overall.

the obvious point that is never discussed however is the fact that all the baksheesh associated with the 1 am closing would evaporate. so little chance the march will do anything but make the news.

If you insist screwing with street-girls rather than the girls out of the clubs, a few tips:

1. Lock everything you don't want stolen in the hotels safety deposit box. (The boxes are down in the lobby and only you have a key.)

2. When you and her get back to your room, have only as much money on you as you want stolen from you.

The girls from the clubs are a better bet, even though you'll have to kick in an extra $8 - $15 "bar-fine" to the bar. If you have trouble with a club girl you can go back to the club and have the problem taken care of. One club girl stole my camera, I complained, and I got it back. That was the only time I ever had any problem with a club girl.

Now street girls? I don't usually have them come up. The things is, of maybe eight times, I was nuked on two of them. The first one stole a little bit over what I would've given her. The second one stupidly got our beers mixed up, and we both ended up nuked.

yes, playing it safe, with a safe is recommended - especially for your travel documents and your plane ticket, but i beg to differ on your take about street girls vs. bar girls and the ability to go back and get things rectified.

IMHO, i think you were lucky. most bars will not help you, that is a myth. they will feign helping, but that's it. they will stall and run you ragged till you give up or acquiesce (especially if they know when you are leaving. they may even ask when you are leaving to misdirect you into thinking they are trying to expedite the resolution of your problem, BUT they just want to know how long they will have to wait you out).

so always cover your ass on everything of value (but do that politely, no one likes to be 'called' a thief, even thieves).

after you leave a bar for complaining, they will 'beat' the girl for bringing a hassle to the bar (and possibly cut her pay or take money from her, or both), that is my experience. and, if someone does 'attempt' to help you in a bar, just like the police, they will want a tip for helping you despite being the injured party. go figure, TIT (this is Thailand).

i have been here 20 years and i have only been robbed once, and she took my cell phone. I WAS STUPID. i was a bit tired and fell asleep, really is my fault. like leaving candy out near a child. by chance i ran into her the next day at a mall, she said she was sorry she was high, and she gave me the money she got for selling it. not that it made up for the total loss, but it taught us both a lesson.

but these are only one person's opinions based on their experiences, others will have something else to say

I agree, Cascade is great. People badmouth it alot and I can't understand it, I never had anything go wrong in all my visits there. But then again all of the bars get complaints for one thing or another (it's my opinion that a lot of the time it's unjustified). I get the feeling that a lot of the time these complaints come from whiney people who just can't adapat to a situation or don't know how to play things from the hip, so to speak, save from the legitimate instances of course.

Everyone there is on the make from the hookers to the taxix to the cops.
The reason why its so popular is everything is conveniently located on the "walking street",a Disney Main St. for adults....
Pattaya also has more "bar beers" per capita then BKK.

Pattaya,due to it nefarious rep attracts many soccer goons,sex tourists,world class drunks,thieves and worse! This fact doesnt go unnoticed by the girls who work the streets and bars of Pattaya,where quick cons blackmails and getting slipped tranqs and the like are common place.
My advice is stick w/ BKK for a few days,get your feet wet,see how the Thai operate and do business.If you feel like after a few days that you have Thailand figured out and your ready for the big leagues give Pattaya a day in court.It is a great place to get stupid blind hammered,pick up a girl,get into a fight or 2,get robbed....but hey you only live once

Yes I agree Thailand is a fairly safe place to be,except for the Russian's head they found swinging from an overpass last week,its safe in comparison to say Brasil or St.Louis.

That being said however one needs to understand the dynamics of the Thai/Farang interaction.We have $$ and the Thai's want it,and will do what it takes to get those chips out your wallet.Thais are great people,and get outside of BKK,Pattaya,Phuket,Samui etc.. you will be hard pressed to find nicer folks,but in the above forementioned places the people are professional con artists.I've lived and worked here for over 4 years and have seen and heard it all.Bangkok has a ton of scams,from the jewlery shops,to the dual pricing(1 price for Thais and another for everyone else)to the street walkers and bargirls to the cops...but trust me BKK is the minor leagues compared to Pattaya.
Nobody knows Pattaya unless you've been here before or know someone who has.Everybody knows BKK...the International airport is here and thats where most folks go.The foreigners who end up in Pattaya are the hardcore...they've graduated from BKK and are ready for more....and thats the spirit of my original post.

i think you learn pretty quick to be sharp, i learned the hard way by telling some yaba head to fuck off after him harrassing me all night to check out a pingpong show, saw him about 8 times in the night, my first night n BKK mind you. i had strayed off from my mate, wasted looking for some cool shit to take photos of, but really, theres nothing cool to take photos of around khao san road haha. he approached me in some alley way so i told him to fuck off, next thing i knew i had 5 little junkies laying in kicks to my thighs and groin trying to drop me on the ground, but i couldnt really feel it, i just stood my ground and didnt fight back, when they realised they couldnt put me on the ground they brought out those little battons and started cracking me over the head, took 2 hits to the forehead, then one jumped up over the top of my and smashed it over the back of my head, i instantly felt a bit dizzy, then something warm dripping down the back of my neck, so i figuired i had better get out of there before i took another one of those hits, and i just walked off muttering about how weak they were haha, but they managed to nab my camera filled with photos from japan and my passport..
i walked to the end of the street and sat down in the gutter i was so concussed i didnt know how to get back to the room, then i had a gg take me to get a room and shower me off, then we made a hell of a mess of the bed, i feel sorry for the person who had to clean up the blood.
