Bin Laden shot in the head - US official
Bin Laden shot in the head - US official
Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was killed with a bullet to the head in an fight that lasted less than 40 minutes, a US official says.
The operation was watched real-time by intelligence officials in a conference room at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, the official, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters.
It was reported that applause followed the news that the operation in north Pakistan earlier today was a success.
The US strike force was reportedly on the ground for under 40 minutes and that the attack took place at a mansion with security gates, high walls with barbed wire but that there was no internet running into the property.
September 11 mastermind bin Laden, who was said to have shown resistance during a gun battle, was shot in the head. The official also said that DNA testing of bin Laden had been undertaken.
Bin Laden's adult was believed to have also been killed.
President Barack Obama made the announcement of bin Laden's death this afternoon.
He said bin Laden, 54, was killed in Abbottabad, a town about two hours' drive north of Islamabad and that his body had been "taken into custody".
Obama said he authorised the operation last week and that it was undertaken today in cooperation with Pakistan.

History Made: Fox News Credits Obama for Killing Osama Bin Laden
You know when Fox News is singing President Obama's praises something serious has gone right in America. I mean, everybody else on every single news channel was saying that Obama -- in concert with our heroic military troops who carried out a daring attack -- pulled off one of the gutsiest, bravest operations in years.
But Fox News?
They were actually saying the same thing.
I half expected Fox News to blame Obama for not killing Bin Laden twice. Or not killing him with the right weapon. But no, Fox News actually gave the president credit.
I know, scary stuff. The anti-Obama network used words like "historic" and a "very great success," which has my head spinning.
You know, maybe the Fox spinmeisters didn't show up to work on Sunday -- maybe they'll arrive at work on Monday morning and say, "Wait a second, we gave Obama an ounce of credit?! Who authorized that?"
Then, get this, at 1:38 a.m. they actually quoted NPR -- in a positive manner.
The world has been turned on its head.

In the rush to report the news of Osama Bin Laden's death, a FOX News affiliate in Sacramento should have taken a moment to check its spelling.
Running along the bottom of FOX40's report on the event, the chyron read: "Reports: Obama Bin Laden Dead."
Apparently, some people issued complaints and accusations that it did it on purpose. After all, FOX News has some obvious conservative leanings in its coverage with Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly over at the mother ship.
FOX40 issued an apology (kind of), but not before they defended its mistake by pointing out how easily it could be made and that other news organizations made similar mistakes, including CNN and the Modesto Bee newspaper.
They even threw a fellow FOX affiliate in San Diego under the bus for its anchor actually saying "President Obama" instead of "Osama Bin Laden" was dead.

Re: Usama bin Laden is dead
My experience with you, is that you are the one that makes the assumption that any criticism of Republican policies is an attack on every single person, identified with that party.
Despite my overwhelming support of Obama, I disagreed with him continuing the policy of drone attacks, within Pakistan. I think it creates more enemies than it killed. However, in the case of Bin Laden, I think it was the right choice. I notice Obama did say that taking innocent lives was minimized. That says then, there were, possibly bystanders killed. This is the one case, I think was worth it, but not in the cases of other unrecognized names, who could be more easily replaced.
One additional thing, I noticed he did not say that Bin Laden planned 9/11. He said that he was the leader of the organiztion that carried out 9/11. Even on official government wnated posters of him, he was not accused of masterminding 9/11. It spoke directlly of the embassy bombings in Africa, and said, 'various other attacks'.

Re: Usama bin Laden is dead
The manner in which Osama bin Laden has died will suit him most of all, after 9/11 he was most commonly photographed holding a gun, not the Qu'ran, and made it known he would 'never be taken alive' -to his fanatical supporters, he died as he lived, fighting the Americans to his last breath. It would have been better had he been arrested in his pyjamas, not for the public humiliation, but as evidence of the man's vulnerability, just as the 'invincible' Saddam Hussein was arrested in a hole in the ground and looked defeated notwithstanding his dishevelled hair and appearance. Fanatics will be preparing their 'revenge', and most likely in Pakistan where they live and breathe, and possibly using targets in India in the medium-term.
The death of bin Laden does not shut down as-Qaeda, but it does burst the balloon of invincibility, and it comes at a time when, across the Arab world, ordinary people are fighting against the same kind of one-eyed, one-party politics that produced bin Laden. Since 1918, the Arabs have been defeated on the battlefield, even Suez was merely a hollow victory because the British left the field rather than being beaten. The Arabs have had enough of family firms, brutal dictators, false promises, fixed economies, fanatical dead-end politics: if bin Laden's death is well-timed, one hopes that for the majority of Arabs, it is one more step towards a different kind of politics, and one that we should support.
My thoughts are with the victims, 'thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears'...
