Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I should check it out, I guess. To compare it.
The latest craze in Hollywood is the remake. Whether it's Halloween or The Fog or whatever.
It's kinda annoying when they mess around, as it were, with the original. But then again Hollywood isn't motivated by art -- ha! ha!

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Watched the final instalment of Stieg Larsson's brilliant Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest on DVD.
Please see the original before Hollywood totally fucks it up. It amazes me that Noomi Rapace in the title role of Lisbeth Salander has been overlooked for acting awards - she lived in the character for more than two years while they shot the books back to back. As a piece of brilliantly sustained characterisation of an individual on the edge it'w without parallel imho.

I haven't seen any of those, but I really want to! By the way, have you seen the Swedish film Let The Right One In? I've seen the remake Let Me In, and I was really blown away by the acting and the subtext of the movie, and was wondering if, as they usually are, the original is better.

I've seen both versions too. The Hollywood one is not that bad, to be fair, but it lacks the subtlety and intimacy of the original, and the kids are just not in the same ball park as actors. The other thing is that the original has no special effects whatsoever - the suspense and strangeness of the movie is all about the atmosphere; the lighting, editing and also the slow pace add to that.
When it comes to subtle suspense the Asians and the Europeans know how to do it. All too often Hollywood substitutes special effects, loud bangs and extra gore. They just don't get it.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
In the original the kids are just extraordinary. You hardly notice the adults - they are almost incidental.
Let the Right One In was the best film I saw in all of 2010.
Best so far this year has to be the Argentinian thriller The Secret in their Eyes which won the best foreign film oscar last year.
You guys should get over the subtitles hurdle - you miss some great movies otherwise.
I'm lucky that there's a great independent cinema in Cambridge where the best foreign movies come. Otherwise they never make the multiplexes and you have to wait for the DVD.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I personally don't mind subtitles. I enjoyed Apocalypto and The Downfall, which are completely in subtitles. I thought The Passion of The Christ had amazing cinematography, but the dialogue was somewhat incidental to that film, it was much more of a visual experience.

Hey, it's not like subtitles are all that accurate either. A lot of the Asian films have awful subtitles...however, at least you get to hear the emotion in the performers voices instead of some added on dubbing...I prefer subtitles also.
...but it does make me sleepy to have to read when I'm stoned...lol.
