The DA will classify this attack as a hate crime which initiates a more robust NYPD response than a routine assault case. Once the perps are caught the prosecution has wide latitude in using new federal and state charges that weren't on the books as recently as 10 years ago. Manhattan has a very successful track record for winning convictions in the short time the statutes have been on the books. These knuckle heads chose the wrong location to beat up a transgendered person. Good chance they'll do serious time.

Which you know is the angle their lawyers are going to use. That's not as compelling an argument for a 'hate crime'. She wasn't followed down the street by a bunch of hooligans who attacked he because she was a TG. If he arrived by himself, and she was up in the room, instead of them arriving together, it'll look like he was ok with her being TG, he might even claim he was a huge fan, and it was just a dispute over the amount of money. Is it a 'hate crime' if a gay client and a gay provider have a fight? Or is it just a crime, which doesn't get the additional jail time for the 'hate' part?

Why are so many people determined to make this a race issue. This poor girl was attacked and it is said sexually assaulted. That's the bottom line. Three vicious men attack. Who cares if they are black or white, muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or christian, Chinese or french etc etc... it is the crime and them being caught and punished that matters.
