Trans girl beaten to death

Last week a young woman named Islan Nettles was viciously assaulted in Harlem when a man attacked her upon realization she was transgendered. She just died from her injuries. Unlike the recent LA tragedy, the motive was not robbery, simply psychotic hate.
Some elitist New Yorkers like to think of their city as the mecca of diversity acceptance..... WRONG

To clarify: ms Nettles was NOT involved in the sex trade. She was specifically targeted for her trans status when she got clocked. Her crime was hanging out with her friends on a street corner flirting with boys, like a million other kids on a Saturday nite.

Maybe….maybe if every man who has ever hired a trans escort, if every boy who has ever beat off to trans porn, if all the guys I and thousands of others have hooked up with via Craig’s List, if the millions who fetishize our bodies, who enjoy us on our knees in bathrooms, who press us against hotel windows, who lay with us in our beds, if the men who adore me and my sisters, but only behind closed doors, would STAND THE FUCK UP AND SPEAK OUT…maybe 21 year old women just enjoying an evening out with friends wouldn’t be beat to death.

Maybe if all of you who read this, our allies and friends and colleagues and family, would call out when others make jokes at our expense, even when we’re not around, if you’d tell advertisers and producers and journalists and writers and comics that you’re not okay with them making trans women nothing but the punchline of jokes or tragic tossaways, that you know us, that we’re not disposable….maybe groups of people would stop feeling so free to harass me and my sisters, maybe crowds wouldn’t just laugh when a man spits at me, or just watch when two young men chase me down the street yelling “shemale”…maybe if you ALL stood up and said enough, maybe a young woman just being herself wouldn’t be beat to death in the streets of the supposedly best place on earth to just be yourself.


Maybe if all the gay men who act as if equality means marriage, if all the white feminists who only serve those that look like them, if all the queers who drop “TWOC” like a shibboleth but don’t know or talk to or walk beside any actual trans women of color…maybe if all of you saw what was happening here and how your actions allow it, how every moment of silence, of waiting for people of color to start the conversation about race …maybe this child could have enjoyed a few more years of being beautiful among us.

A 21 year old was beat to death in our streets. It happened because she is a woman, and of color, and transgender. It happened because our men won’t admit they love us, because our friends aren’t speaking out against the thousand little dehumanizing actions of others, because our own “LGBT” community isn’t comfortable talking about race and class.

This has to change. Now.

Playing devil's advocate, there was a group of men involved in the beating. Maybe the police didn't catch all of them, and they need to do that first. Maybe this guy wasn't the one who threw the worst of the blows. This happened in front of a police station so I think there was plenty of closed circuit video recorded.

I doubt this murder will be swept under the rug, especially with a lesbian leading the polls to be the next mayor of the City. NYC is very LGBT friendly. When Eva Lin was attacked a few months ago, the police didn't sweep it under the rug. It took a few days, or a few weeks, but they caught all the punks involved.

Here's an update on the circumstances surrounding the killing of Islan Nettles.

According to the article, the killer and Islan met and became "friends" on FB. Islan's page did not reveal her transgender status, and she also kept a separate page in her male persona.

NYPD procedures should also be investigated because after finding Islan “unconscious on the ground with a swollen shut eye and blood on her face,” they arrested Wilson on a misdemeanor assault charge after Nettles’ friend identified him.

How the fuck after a witness identifies an attacker who leaves a victim in the condition Islan was found in gets charged only with a misdemeanor is absurd...even worse is that as a result, bond was set at only $2000 and the attacker is now free despite the fact that Islan is dead.

Another tragedy... RIP

RIP Islan Nettles The guy that murdered her needs too go to jail for life. This needs to stop. It looks like every week or two a transgender woman is getting murdered. I was surprised by all the positive comments on the news paper article with the story.

Now that she died he will be re arrested and charged with a hate crime and manslaughter at the least, should be murder.

Should have been handled as a Hate crime - pure and simple - and a couple more zeros added onto the bond to keep them sitting in a cell till they could be tried for the true nature of the crime.

If they started putting these fools in jail for life for these hate crimes, it might send the message that NO you cannot beat a transgendered woman to DEATH after finding out her status. Or for whatever reason.
No way you could randomly beat a casual non-transgendered acquaintance to death on a city street and be released on bail.

Still happening way too often.

They ought to start making hate crimes like this subject to automatic Capitol punishment or life sentence without parole in the worst prison possible.
