The ad isn't racist. When white people say something good about black people then there is always an idiot who screams racism. When white people say bad things about blacks then of course someone will scream racism.
I thought this ad was very cute and sweet.
Could use a lot more commercials like that. A lot more.
I actually seen it many times and never seen wrong. Then news came out about peep mad at commercial. Funny I never noticed it was interracial. Shows how much it's normal to me!
Same here. The only thing that was on my mind was that it was a Cheerios commercial.
I guess that's just how some people are wired. Take this old Volkswagen commercial from back in the day. There were people getting up in arms about it. Can any of you figure out why?
90's Commercials - VW Golf 1997 - Sunny Afternoon (Song by Trio (Da Da Da)) - YouTube
Yea, I've heard allot of weird things about interracial couples and mixed children
The simple fact that this cute ad would be put in question by some is revolting. Then indeed, you don't see that much opening from Hollywood productions either. I think media have a huge responsibility they don't always show they're up to: they should simply say "The hell with racists! let's just do what's right! and moreover, let's adjust our message (and ad) to the tendencies society is taking, if just that!" If they were to do so, things would change rapidly, I suppose, although I must say I am not from the US, and I can only judge things from the outside.
It's just sad that something as innocuous as this can still stir up controversy in the 21st century. Racism is a curse.
Let's hope that the advertisers stand firm - it wasn't that long ago that they would drop an entire show if it upset racists.
They've already stated they're not going to pull the commercial. The only thing they did was disable the comments on their YouTube page.

Case in point, someone else re-uploaded it...and kept the comments section open. Check it out.
'Just Checking': Cheerios' New Commercial [HD] - YouTube
Marketing, period. The wrongs or rights and feelings about interracial marriage arent really important for to the people that made the ad. The fact that its getting people to talk about their product is.
personally, i really hate it when people try and shove down "messages" like these (interracial couple) down my throat in such an obvious way- so i can understand where most of the hate is coming from- even though i don't approve of it.
also, the whole interracial debate has overshadowed the whole health aspect that cheerios are trying to shilling- so it doesn't even work in that aspect.
but people aren't talking about cheerios. they're talking about the interracial couple. it's like if i made an ad where a black guy is robbing someone to advertise shoes then say "hey, at least people are talking about my product now"
How is that shoving it down your throat?!?! There was no emphasis on race in the commercial AT ALL.
every time i see white people on tv should i start screaming aryan propaganda smdh.
So do only white traditional couples and black traditional couples have a right to be shown on TV.get the fuck out of here
What do you mean indeed, by “shove it down your throat in such an obvious way”? Do you mean to say that there always should only be “white” couples in ads or else there would be some kind of insidious message conveyed to you?? What the fuck are you talking about? I know I can’t claim the sole privilege of drunkenness here but man! get off the bottle already! It’s precisely what it’s all about! this precise type of narrowness of mind which poisons the lives of everybody! Do you live on Mars? or on some remote island where only rednecks and retards have gathered to escape the world? Don’t you see how this world is changing? Why would this couple be something wrong or out of the ordinary or particular if it’s not precisely YOU, YOURSELF who sees something out of the ordinary with it! And you claim that then, you “can understand where most of the hate is coming from”? The hatred? the violence? the bullshit some people have to go through just because of skin pigment or culture? Really?! This cute little ad makes you understand that!!!!!!! You got to be fucking kidding me!!
Christ man! what the fuck is so wrong with your life that you have to carry around here your misery and your frustration like that all the time? Don’t you realize that it’s all what’s coming out of any of your intervention? Try to bare your name a little, would you, Bluesoul? and stop being such a fucking Asssoul!
this ad is about cheerios right? so why not make it about cheerios and not the couples ethnicity? to me, this ad seemed like it was more about saying "hey, we're cheerios and we support diversity, so we're definitely not racist"
also, am not sure why you thought i meant to say that "there always should only be “white” couples in ads". why didn't you think i meant to say there should only be "black" couples in ads? why did you automatically assume i was trying to say "white" couples?
oh and btw: "Asssoul!" i actually like that. i know i should be insulted, but for some weird reason i'm not. not sure why either, but you had to say it, and i'm glad you did
What I always find odd is if the mum was black and the dad was white you would see a lot less hate. I could care less that Ice T's wife is blonde but it stresses some people out but when a french guy dates Halle Berry nobody bats an eye.
Can you not even follow your own logic? Should we think that you can’t even understand what you are writing or the logic of what you’re writing? If you imply that by putting in the ad an “interracial” couple they are conveying a particular message (which is in itself narrow minded and incredibly stupid), you OF COURSE, by logical consequence, mean that if they don’t present a couple “representing” the majority or the average, they will always do the same. There’s no way around that logic! and it’s yours! The formulation of your very sentence implies that. Can’t you even see it? (Can narrow-mindedness and racism be even partly caused by such stupidity? I’m baffled!) The worst in this, is that in your reply, you repeat the same thing differently! The same thing and the same logic! Why are they saying, to you, that they are supporting diversity and “shoving it down your throat” just by the fact that there is an “interracial” couple there? First, it means once again that anything out of the average conveys a particular message! Second, YOU ARE THE ONE TO SEE A PROBLEM WITH THIS!! or something particular!
You find “Asssoul” to your liking? I suggest you adopt it. It suits you much better.
And yes! of course, the publicity is about Cherios! Then why do YOU make it about something else??
what about this one?
I love it!
Borderline Racist 1960's Jell-O Ad - YouTube
Yeah! Indeed borderline, like they say on the tittle. I remember that Jello, back then, used to make a whole lot on the fact that their product was shaking, or trembling. They would always show a chunk of trembling Jello as if it was some funny dish to gobble! Of course, those publicity targetted moms and kids. So in this case, the idea is of course that you can't eat this shaking substance with sticks.
One more note on this: in the 60's, it's incredible how little we knew of Asia! Japanese elements started to enter western culture along that decade, with both bad manufactured products and cartoons. Before, Asia was still surrounded by a cloud of mystery. But from then on, everything changed...
Awwww... Poor downtrodden klan/nazis got their feelings hurt by the big bad meanies who think they're full of shit & just don't care about mixing the gene pool. Boo hoo hoo... Well, I'm fresh out of sympathy for insecure fools & their irrational fears.
LMAO!!
Absolutely right, Hippifried!
Disgrace!:(
There seems to be a special category of moron that hangs around YouTube making the stupidest comments imaginable. Maybe the same ones who spend the rest of their loser lives on Yahoo Answers trying to make the world believe they actually knew something once...
What I find interesting is that I can actually think of a number of interracial couples I've seen on TV shows but virtually none on ads. It's funny that there would be such a discrepancy from advertisements and general television. I also think it's funny that the same sex couples I see on TV are very often interracial.
Once again people here need to get out of attack mode and try to THINK about other peoples points of view!! The "shoved down my throat" guy picked a poor choice of words, but I get the sentiment. I don't have problem with interracial couples-- hell i ALWAYS date outside my race, BUT you have to wonder what the ACTUAL purpose of the ad was. It really does seem they had an agenda beyond selling Cheerios. There was no mistake or accident in casting---they chose to portray an interracial relationship for a reason and it's hard to believe that reason was to sell cereal... unless interracial families have a propensity to buy more cereal than anyone else. As a thinker, I wonder why they did it.
I also think the negative reaction is a non-story, like 95% of the stuff reported these days. Yes there were negative comments, but there always is on YouTube. People do it for shits and giggles. I don't think the PERCENTAGE of people saying negative things compared to those who were supportive is out of whack and is fairly representative of society. I think there's an entire generation of "new hippies" that live in a fantasy world of rainbows and cotton candy, but the truth is you can't please everybody and that should be ok.
Why would this even be a question if you weren’t narrow minded in the first place? That’s the question. If you didn’t think in the first place: “interracial couple? there’s something suspicious there! they want to convince me of something”, why would you even make anything of the skin pigment of the people in the ad? You really don’t even see your own attitude about this? Why would you suspect Cherios to “have an agenda beyond selling” cereals just because the actors don’t have the skin pigment you think they should have? You’re implying that “unless interracial families have a propensity to buy more cereal than anyone else”, they should not have put an “interracial” couple in the ad. Why? Why would their skin pigment make any difference?
Now, I'm sorry but there’s no justification to think like that, man! None. Your own reaction to this is not much better than that of those who are making these shitty comments on Youtube. An attitude such as yours is precisely what creates the situation in wish such people feel justified to make these comments. How can you not see that?
first time I saw the commercial I remember being annoyed that a dumb kid would pour cereal on her dad when he's snoozing on the couch. I'm not a fan of using cutsie children in TV ads.
maybe I'm truly enlightened. I never noticed the family was multiracial til I saw this thread.
No no and NO! I never even noticed the commercial, but I'm old enough to know nobody, especially corporations, does things on a whim. If you think there wasn't a meeting where someone pitched this idea, you're a bit naive. The question is why??? That's the guys point about being spoon fed ideals. It's a cereal ad, but they are trying to suggests things that have nothing to do with cereal. I can see taking offense to that. It would be no different if they had gun toting republicans with carefully placed NRA stickers everywhere. I would ask why? Sorry that you just accept everything at face value and sorry that you can't understand that everybody is not like you.
Just peeped the commercial, on the real it's the cutest shit ever. Cheerios did it right. Unlike McDonalds and other companies insensitive fucking commercials. Any Black/White/etc.. person that has an issue with this commercial is either an asshole or a racist (or both which means the person prob works for FoxNews).
I would have appreciated more if it wasn't for Cheerio's but for those chocolate rice krispies which they advertise "turns the milk brown".
THAT would have been more my style of marketing.
Are interracial couples really that controversial?? I mean, does a commercial featuring a BM/WW as a couple mean someone is shoving an 'agenda' down your throat?? Jeez man.
You would think since the POTUS is a half-frican, people wouldn't get so bent about seeing IR couples on TV.
Goes to show you what I know.
First time I saw the commercial I didn't even realize they were an IR couple because he and his wife weren't even shown in the same room!!
I'll watch out more for that hidden secret lib 'agenda'.
Where is the racism in this advert? I cannot see it. It's jus cute. Love the punchline
I had never seen this ad untill it appeared on the net as a controversy. It's a a great scene and very cute. Whomever keeps screaming racism on anything and everything should watch their step. People get numb after a while and then when you really need them they will just be sick and tired of responding, this coming from someone who is 100% for interracial relationships.
