On Transexual Films Like

A Soldiers Girl - I liked the story of course and what it stood for, but I did not like the actor they chose he looked nothing like her and definitely doesn't sound like her. To me it was an embarassment, and they should of just let her do her own part. She's an actress right.

TransAmerica - Another Good Message and empowering of course! However for someone to of had all the work done she said in the beginning what transexual is going to try to hide themselves with the hat, glasses, etc like shes in disguise. Also the overexagerrated female expressions and walk. No transexual I know does that. That offended me when people laughed and they made sure to make her less attractive - Why couldn't they of had a girl like Candis Cayne or a looker to be the transexual thats all I am saying.

The Pat Arujio Story - The same complaint as Soldiers girl, she was totally passable clearly or she wouldn't of tricked so many people for such a long time. The actor they chose wasn't they could of picked someone that resembled her more and didn't sound so masculine, a sad story that needed to be heard yes, but I just hate how the media views us or makes us out to be less than attractive and sound like men.


Thats my stance on it I wish for once they'd put a beautiful transexual in a film someone to be a role model that is all!

Kelly, have you met other transexuals in Louisville? I'm curious as to where.
I live in a city of over a half mil, and if they're here they're stealthy. I would imagine it would be at a club, right?

My understanding of the word stealthy means living as a woman, so they're not hanging out with other transexuals. Am I right? So, my question was, if you know a lot of TS, and they're local, whether that means you meet them at some particular club, meetings, whatever, or that there really are a lot of TS women everywhere and you meet them at the grocery store or wherever.

By the way. Last night's pics were just an attempt to get you and harajuku to lighten up. That was just over the top for two strangers.
Oh and I'm in Oregon, I'm not asking for specific places to hunt for TS, just general observations.

Haven't (Yet) seen any of the above. I'll eventually catch TransAmerica at Blockbuster. Tried to find the Gwen Arujo story on torrent, but it wouldn't take.

One that I highly recommend is Hillary Swank's breakout film: Boys Don't Cry. It's a very good adaptation of the Brandon Teena story (I also recommend the documentary to give people the complete picture of what went on towards the end of Teena's life). The story of Brandon Teena and that of Gwen Arujo are frighteningly similar, while being mirror opposites in gender identity. Swank, though not TG, was an excellent choice to play the role.

Stealth means to me someone thats passable and can live among society with out being clocked much thats what stealth means to me not someone living in a dreamstate that they are stealth

Kelly, I agree with your observation about the movies. One one hand, America is opening up to the stories of TS lives as real people. But on the other hand they are not ready to relate to a real TS yet. Some of it it just marketing, I think. The "To Wong Foo ...." movie was probably more successful because name box office people were playing the drag queens.

I heard about a movie which Candis Cayne plays a TS who dates a mobster, but it's not a major movie, or at least I have not heard of it playing around here, or on cable.

But a positive way to look at it is that there remains an opportinity for a TS to have a breakthrough role in film. A producer could be talked into having a TS play a GG. I think that that would generate publicity for a film. Another is have a major supporting part for a TS as part of the story
line but revolving around their sexual status. It would have the same publicity benefit.

You all seem to have a lot of drama in your lives. Next step; take it to the screen, while your still young and beautiful!

They were good as far as Hollywood productions go. I thought, within the limits of the direction and storyline (which were quite limited as you say), that Felicia Huffman did a fine job acting the role of Bree, though that role should have been stronger.

I quite enjoyed Kinky Boots. Great little comedy.

My two favorite transsexual feature films so far have been Princessa (very realistic, well done for the most part, though very sad) and Beautiful Boxer, which is my top pick by far. It was made with great sensitivity to the plight of a kathoey in Thailand AND--this point should not be missed--to the sport of Muay Thai boxing. Although the actor was not a transsexual, he was cast firstly because he was a champion boxer, which Nong Toom was (nearly undefeated)--she has gone on to break Thai tradition yet again by training young girls to box, something previously restricted to boys. Anyway, I found the movie very uplifting and, according to my Thai friends, quite accurate in its portrayal.

A Soldiers Girl - who knows maybe Calpernia didnt want to play the part or didnt want a bunch of horny fucks knockin on her door every day from the exposure from the movie, could have been a number of reasons why she didnt play the part, as for the movie it was good it did show the true hatred of bigots. i didnt care for the movie to much i saw it as more of a chic flic :shrug

TransAmerica - I never saw the movie but i did see a shit load of previews when i was going to LGBT youth, even though i did see the main character it did piss me off because of how hollywood portrays TS, not all TS look that way and or need that much surgery, but the movie got under my skin because of how hollywood see's TS today and has now shown the world a bad version of US Transsexuals. :? :angry

The Pat Arujio Story - :?: mmmmm i had no clue they turned it into movie hmmm, but ive read the story, **Paul Merel’s girlfriend, Nicole Brown, said that Araujo’s gender was called into question by the suspects. When Araujo didn’t answer whether she was a man or a woman, Brown said she encouraged the others to find out.** guess she wasnt so passable after all. but its just sad to see the hatred of those who cant deal with transsexuals.

i remember when Soldiers Girl came out on cable...i was in LA on vacation with my gf.....we saw a huge billboard for that movie on our way to magic mountain...

Transamerica just rubbed me the wrong way. Yet another TS movie where I can identify with little the subject went through. The other two were ok.

Best depiction of a young kid who may well become a TS has to be "Ma vie en Rose". I like the Irony pointed out in the end. Irony about how girls and boys are treated differenly.

As far as america and what it has heard /seen of transsexuals. 9/10 times a TS on TV or any media here in the USA was the whitebread married father pillar of the community before being a TS. That is the way the "transgender (activist) community" wants it. So that is the way it is.

I think they don't use more passable and attractive girls because it almost kills the story of what they are trying to push. People not exposed to the trans issue won't see a passable attrcative TS in the same way. Her story becomes less tragic, less dramatic.

I don't think people would relate to a pretty girl that looks like a girl as being anything but a female. They might as well hire a female which I'm sure it would be easier to find.

The fact that the trans portrayed in the movie looks a bit masculine tells a large part of the story without actually telling the story. The same with the stories of people who transition later in life from husband/father.

I was interested to see Transamerica at first but when I saw trailers I thought why have they chose a genetic female actress to play a Transexual? There are many, many Transexual women far more "passable" Felicity Huffman. It seems the reasons for choosing her were
A: hollywood movies NEED a big name star to get interest, distribution,
a "green light" and there aren't any Tgirls mainstream enough
B: They chose a woman who could be convincing as a man turned woman.
In my opinion she looks more like a TV than a realistic TS
Now I think there are probably many post operative Transexuals out there who could play such a part in a mainstream film, its just that no one knows who they are! There must be loads of actresses, pre and post op who would shine if given the chance. I know performers like Vaniity want to break into mainstream and there is no reason why not as long as she does her acting classes or whatever. Is the mainsteam media ready to allow it however with all its connection to big business, big religion. I think people have a problem with porn actresses doing straight acting. They can't separate the two characters in their mindsw.

They didn't want anyone passable in that role. That is why they made her look the way that she did. She looks like a lot of transwomen that transition later in life. If they wanted passable they would have left her as she was.

A great deal of those TS women that transition later in life do appear more like TVs then what we see here on HA or in porn.

No offense to the girls that you mentioned, although they may have desire to act or maybe even have acted before. They are not on the level of mainstream ready, not because of the porn but because they aren't anywhere near the acting talent of a Felicity Huffman or Hilary Swank.

I feel the same about all three films. It's just like the show Ugly Betty. Why not use one of you lovely ladies? Rebbeca-Romjin Stamos is fine but she's not a TS.

I saw all three of those movies, and I thought they were all great. As far as the actresses go, it doesn't really matter to me who plays the part as long as the movie is beliveable and well acted. I thought all the leading actresses (or actors... depending on how you look at it) did a very good job in all three movies.

By the way, I loved the catch phrase that they used in A Soldiers Girl. I think it was something like "She was the only man he ever loved" GREAT!!!

There are also a lot of other great Transgendered movies out there. I have rented many from netflix (not porn movies, just good Transgendered movies both foreign and domestic).

I don't know about that Kelly. I have seen some people, older Transitioning TS's who after FFS BAS SRS and thousands of hours of electrolysis still look like Fred Flintsone in a dress. Age, Testosterone, and a hard hypermasculine life of trying to "hide it" will do that to you.

I think the point in TransAmerica of not having someone really hot, was to emphasize the vulnerability of the character.

I hate to bump this old thread but I just saw the Gwen Arujio movie A Girl Like Me for the first time it was very sad how homophobic people can be. I watched the movie with my transgirlfriend and she cried at the end. The real life person was very beautiful I goggle her pictures. I never saw the other two movies.

I still think one of the better depictions of a transsexual on film is Terrence Stamps turn as Bernadette in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I thought it was a beautifully nuanced performance. It's a comedy but there is some genuine depth behind much of that film.

1. Soldier's Girl
Lee Pace did not look like Calpurina Addams but I believe they cast relatively unknown actors (or actors who are def not a-listers) because it was a made for tv movie AND it, in 2003, was a controversial topic. moreover, lee pace is not very feminine, and far less feminine in drag than calpernia therefore it helped sell the image of the "risque" nature of a regular relationship. Given the 2003 climate, the military angle and that it is based on calpernia's own account, i think this film did a fine job with portraying a love denied and i am fine with lee pace's look and job in the role.

2. Transamerica
this movie, i feel got completely too much attention for its subject matter over its performances. it isn't a good movie. it isn't well produced, acted, written, etc. it, like brokeback and many other movies, it was just covered heavily in the media because it was different. Huffman was ok in her role but ultimately, i don't think it was really that challenging for her to play a woman on the road to self discovery.

3. didn't see it


I don't think mainstream society has evolved to the point where larger producers would risk transwoman actors in main roles. having roles go to relatively unknown actors in indie films and having established stars in gender bending roles seems far more palatable and profitable. change is slow...but its happening.

After watching Soldiers Girl and thinkng about it a bit, I think Lee Pace did a good job and was cast well, despite not looking as good as Calpernia Adams.

I think it was important for the story that Lee Pace's character was clockable but still pretty and appealing enough to see the attraction and the risk involved in the relationship. If she was too passable the drama would not work.

There are films which are about the transgendered experience, and films in which transexuals are characters -I tend to prefer the latter.

Nevertheless,
Beautiful Boxer (2004), about a transexual in Thailand who becomes a kick-boxer is based on a true story. The actor doesn't really convince as a woman but its a good film within its limitations.

The Crying Game (1992) -Jaye Davidson looks good but the film is hysterical nonsense with an overlay of spurious Irish Republican politics.

Saint Jack (1979) was shot in Singapore and includes a scene in which ladyboys from the (now defunct) Bugis St market are taken back to a hotel for sex.

Gozu (Takshi Miike 2003) includes transexual characters in a hallucinogenic cafe in Japan.

Zatoichi (2003) includes a transgendered character; great film by the way.

Gun Hill Road (Rashad Green, 2011)
May be the most serious film involving a transexual since Boys Don't Cry; unfortunately it is not available in the UK so I haven't seen it.
