The empirical evidence is there, it simply isn't the conspiracy theory that Solitary makes it out to be. Look at the facts:
The passage and continued use of the Patriot Act, the federal wiretaps act and the Bush's continued insistence on the need to step up domestic security in order to combat external threats have given local, state and federal authorities enormous leeway and power in dealing with ANYTHING they fell may constitute a 'threat to national security' or a 'threat to public welfare and safety.
Consider the fact that the recession we are in is due, at least in part, to the surging use of outsourced labor and huge increases in the use of imported products. This means less need for domestic industry, which in turn means less employment. This affects all areas of employment, from retail to construction to manufacturing.
Consider our continued war in Iraq. This conflict has produced only a single desirable result: the death of Hussein. Other than that, Iraq remains an area completely contaminated by chaos and disorder. It is plainly obvious that while we were once welcomed, we are no longer. This conflict has dragged on longer than any foreign conflict we have even been involved in, cost into the hundreds of billions of dollars, cost thousands of lives on both sides and we are no closer to any resolution now than we were five years ago. Yet the Bush administration continued to pour more money and manpower into this useless conflict.
Consider that CA is now talking about issuing IOU's in place of State Tax Refunds. If CA, which is supposedly wealthier than many countries, can't meet their tax refunds, what does that say about other states? Will they follow suit?
The issues here isn't about some long ranging conspiracy...there is NO conspiracy because it's all out in the open. You might ask what is the point...simple: control. Political and economic agendas, like those above, have been around for centuries and they all focus on tightening a government's control over it's populace. By controlling how much money is flowing, what information is flowing and even on what is deemed right and wrong, a government will seek to create as much of a static, predictable society as it can...all for the purpose of control. Like I said, this isn't like anything of what we see in the movies or read about in thrillers....most governments have played at this since time immemorial. The only change now is the scale at which these agendas operate.
