You're right about Asian films - around 20 years ago it was as if they deliberately set out to make the subtitles and translation really funny. Did you get the Japanese series Monkey in the US? It was a classic of that type.

However, with European films the translation is pretty faithful - I speak German and French fluently, and the English versions are usually excellent.
