The late Kevin Ayers who died a few days ago - probably by his own hand - was a founder member of the 1960s British Psychedelic group The Soft Machine and then for decades a solo performer. He never really made much of an impact, but was one of those British singers whose sense of whimsy captured one of the essential qualities of the british Psychedelic moment which distinguished it from the harder US version (others were Syd Barrett of The Pink Floyd and Donovan).
