From a Thai Buddhist temple in south London... a notion of hell
There is a great description of the impact of such a vision of hell on the medieval mind in "The Name Of The Rose' by Umberto Eco, but the very best literary evocation of the Christian terror of hellfire is, surely, in "A Portrait of The Artist As a Young man" by James Joyce.
Danthepoetman, what is the picture of these buildings lost in / covered by jungle you posted some posts above ? Fake or truth ?

Oh! my good God!! that girl is a peach! That's my favourite fruit in summer... ;)
The pic of vegetation covered buildings is fake, Cedric. Do you know a show entitled "Life After People"? It shows what would happen with what humans have built if we were all to disapear suddenly. And the answer is, in the end, just about nothing after a few thousand years tops. I've always found this strangely reassuring, for some reason I have a hard time explaining. This picture made me think of that... :)

This pic of a species of primate that was only recently discovered by non-Africans somehow makes me feel less human.
