Ahhh, the old mullerian duct gag. I should have know. Typically, I'm all for knowing more rather than knowing less. However, this thoughtful and informative post made me a little squeemish about two body parts I love dearly. Therefore my own personal conclusion is; Fuck Science. There are various degrees on intersex people. I think people have a lot of misconceptions, because in most its portrayed or believed to be a person with too function organs and that is super rare. Being born with 2 genitals is what determines a intersex person, so does not depend on whether it is functioning. If the sex organ can be undeveloped, but as long as it is there a person is classified as intersex. I remember reading a whole thing on it. It is rare to see at least both functioning parts. In fact a women had male testicles, but in reality they were inside her body and you would never know unless you asked. Another man had a labia folds on his skin to indicate he had reproductive organs, but there was no entry way for penetration. The female genitals where not developed fully, but where present in the body. In one case a man after many years became a women after learning in adulthood she was intersex. Its something people rarely researched and not many people are aware of it. I hope this sheds some clarity on the issue.

You do not need two sets of genitalia to be an intersex individual. There are a number of ways a person can be in between the male and female norm in terms of their biological sex. It can be based on having a specific genotype (see Klinefelter's), it can be based on having genitalia that are between the male and female norm in size (micro-penis), or having a mix of attributes that do not correlate with one another. For instance, someone with 5 alpha reductase deficiency may have male genitalia but will not convert testosterone into dht and therefore will not have male secondary sex characteristics. If you look at all of the related factors, there are probably many more ways in which this can occur.
