btw. I find Portuguese pretty easy to learn, I already knew French and German, but as a native English speaker the Brazilian Portuguese pronounciations were tricky at first but once you memorize the rules it became a cinch to pronounce.

i have been in Thailand for a long time and i can vouch for the fact that knowing the local language opens doors that would never even present themselves otherwise.

having linguistic skills cuts right through the BS, lets the locals know you care about communicating with them directly, you can be user friendly, but are not to be messed with.

i will assume it must be the same anywhere.
