A Canadian I know has told me ruefully that he thinks Ice Hockey has been ruined by a near-theatrical need for bust-ups and barney, mostly for the tv audience. I think when he was younger he was a serious follower and believes it has gone downhill as a sport and become a form of ghoulish entertainment, except maybe at the Olympics where the players actually try to win something. I tried watching it on tv in the last Olympics but most of the time you cant see the -puck is it?- which makes it all rather pointless.
when can we have a baseball / rounders poll
I choose football ("soccer") anytime, it's a sport for gentlemen...
Quite. I agree, Sammi. It wasn't for gents when I played it. How many times did a coach say to me "That winger of theirslooks tasty. Can you let him know early that you're there and if you can do it permanently even better." lol
Not surprising that I moved on to rugby....
Hockey is what came out when, in a February of some year, in the 19th century, at 10 degrees under the sun, in an immense country of forests and wildness, with practically nothing to do but freeze to death, some Scots with their curling met outside on the canal some French and English on their skates, and with some native playing their lacrosse, probably all drunken at this point, terribly mixed all of that and invented a game that is for that reason quite rough, drama prone, very fast, overly complicated and a little weird. The exploit, to tell everything, is to have and to still be able to this day, to attract more and more people yet to play with them.
I think the prejudice against the super skilled game of soccer simply represents the preponderance of Americans on this forum. They got lumbered - early on in their history - with a strange thing that purports to be sport and which they call football involving armoured hulks jumping on top of each other and fighting, instead of the skilled game most of the world enjoys. As for Hockey - in the UK it is mainly a girl's game.
