And maybe it was time to go back an re-check some of the initial assumptions. Abandon this illusion that they'd somehow transcended ancient, outdated, primitive notions of sex and sexuality and join the rest of the world in that place called - "Reality." If the overwhelming majority of tranny admirers are self-described hetero men, I think the definition of what is a gay and hetero by necessity needs to be broadened.

Your little story only takes into account people who want to be females. There are people out there who think they should've been born female, have a female soul, but realize they will never be that. So they stay in that "tweener" stage-- not completely male, not completely female, but Trans in the truest sense because they are a cross between both genders. This is why it's not a matter of coming up with a new way to call something old. It is indeed something new that deserves it's own terminology! Just saying you are either gay or straight is not enough. There is a neither.
