You missed my point entirely. As a straight married man, you will get thousands of dollars in State and Federal benefits that are denied to almost all transsexuals. You get to order your social, legal and financial affairs with a simple marriage certificate, whereas a transsexual and her partner will need to spend countless dollars on powers of attorney, living wills, and other documents to try to achieve parity. You will never be fired, barred from a club or excommunicated from a church simply because of who you are.

You are free to smoke and drink, overeat, not exercise, do drugs, partake in extreme sports, ride motorcycles without a helmet, drive your classic car (the one without airbags) without wearing a seatbelt, and Medicare will take care you. Those things cost the health care system many millions of dollars. Yet you reserve your ire for a transsexual just trying to improve herself. And the ironic thing is that the care you are concerned about would be considered cosmetic and probably be excluded. But Viagra, even for convicted sex offenders would not be.

Excellent points, Felicia. Even here in Massachusetts--the only state in the union to find same sex marriages legal and a constitutional right--things are very difficult for same sex couples. For instance, will state law allows same sex spouses to file income tax as a married couple (in fact, requires it, as either jointly or filing separately), federal law does not recognize their marriage and thus requires them to file separately. This creates a nearly endless confusion of paperwork and conflicting forms depending upon the couple's financial situation. And that's just a small part of the whole.

But then we know the system is inherently unfair. At least some states are taking measures to try to correct the issue. At least those of use involved in this community--at whatever level--should try to support our brethren and sistren (is that a word?) and not sow dissent where unity is needed.
