That same site says 42 percent of inmates are black, 40 percent are white.
Problem there is that whites in 2006 made up 74% of our population (over 220 million people), blacks made up a mere 13.4% (slightly over 40 million).
Since the population white versus black is so unbalanced, then one would expect when "everything else is equal," 74% of ceos would be white, 13.4% would be black. 74% of inmates would be white, 13.4% would be black. 74% of students would be white, 13.4% would be black. Time and time again the white group will have a larger population (more ceos, more teachers, more lawyers) because as a group- the white population has 180,000,000 more people!
But since there are really 40% of the inmates who are black, and not a small 13.4%- then it's clear that blacks are disproportionately more likely to be in prison. Which is, beyond debate- a major indicator that something is wrong.
I found the 2000 year stats on college enrollment in the US, the 2000 census says 14.38 million attended undergrad, 3.11 attended grad school (I rounded both #s for simplicity).
The way this breaks down by race is:
For whites:
18-24: 6,756,030
25+: 5,699,882
Total: 12,455,912
/17,490,000= ~71.2% of the (college) student body are white
For blacks:
18-24: 1,024,774
25+: 1,187,829
Total: 2,212,603
/17,490,000= ~12.7% of the (college) student body are black.
That said:
-If there are only ~846,735 black inmates, then there are MORE black college students than there are black inmates. In fact there is more than twice as many black college students, than there are inmates.
-The amount of whites in college, and blacks in college, DOES NOT SHOW the gross imbalance found in our prison system. Could there be improvement? Absolutely, but the #'s don't show a massive disparagy... at least back in 2000. That was almost 10 years ago, who knows what has changed since.
