Live and Let Die
Back to the future III
Katalin Varga, a film made in Hungarian and filmed in Romania by a British director. It was shown on BBC4 tonight, so no ad breaks.
A relentless, enigmatic chase thriller in glorious countryside and beautifully shot. Highly recommended.
"Slutty bitches like to get fisted, like cum whores"
The Rite for about 30 minutes then I changed to family guy reruns.
The Poseidon Adventure remake. OMG, that movie sucks eggs!!! Include 2103: The Deadly Wake!
I would have rather watched Godzilla with Matthew Broderick.
Il Y A Longtemps Que Je T'aime (I've Loved You So Long, 2008 ) - long drawn out movie about a woman who is trying to reconnect with her sister after 15 years in prison for murder. Kristen Scott Thomas (5/10)
Spiral (Engrenages, 3 seasons) - engaging French cop series following one complex murder case per season. Great cast, superb acting
The Wave - Die Welle (German, 2008 ) - high school teacher tries to teach students the power of a dictatorship through example, but it takes a wrong turn.
Beautiful Boy (2010) - heavy movie about a couple about to separate when they find out their only child is responsible for a college killing spree. Slow, but the acting is sharp. I watched this right after Il Y A Longtemps Que Je T'aime. Bad idea....
Hostel (2005) - had seen it before but got a better copy. Meh. Standard horror flick set in Eastern Europe
I've loved you so Long is.............long....BUT..........how can you not love seeing Kristin Scott Thomas as she reveals layer after layer of her character?! The woman is sublime on screen and who cares about the rest of the movie!
I thought Die Welle was better than average. It got tighter as it moved along and the ending though somewhat predictable (for me) was still powerful.
Agreed on Hostel....it was average except for the cinematography which I thought was really nice.
For a another Eastern European horror - have you seen Transsiberian?
I agree with you on all counts. In the Kristin Scott Thomas movie, the clues came out too slowly; the pace was sluggish. Due to that it was tough to support the character. I was getting restless and impatient waiting for her to open up. Ms Thomas did a great job looking like shit throughout the entire movie. I liked her relationship with the man who was courting her.
In the movie's defense, I had just finished watching a fast-paced French police drama, so I was on a different speed to begin with.
Transsiberian was more of a suspense than horror, no? with Ben Kingsley & Woody Harrelson? If so, no I didn't like it. Too formulaic for me. I liked the concept but bad execution, imo.
I want to recommend something for you.....
Hesher (2010) - wild HS kid squats in a family's home after a death and shakes things up
Half Nelson (2008 ) - about a HS teacher who befriends a student but is addicted to crack
Midnight in Paris (2011) - Woody Allen - guy goes into a time-warp into 1920's Paris and meets writers, painters, etc
The Lives of Others (2006) - German, secret police stuff
Carlos (2010) - 4 hour movie or mini-series about an int'l terrorist from the 70's through the early-90's. based on a true person
I've Loved you So Long is definitely worth seeing, but I wonder if the denouement is believable -? It rests on an assumption that only one person understood the medical data in question, and that doesn't ring true to me, and its not like its a small point given that someone spends 15 years in prison as a result.
As I said in my earlier post on the film version of Carlos, it is historically inaccurate, and I think that even the tv series chooses to avoid the early part of Carlos's career when he was in Jordan during 'White September', but I would consider watching all 4 hours if and when I can get it on dvd.
Agreed that Transsiberian had a good concept but execution could have been better. Really liked Woody Harrelson though and the atmosphere created was superb. Maybe it's because I spent a night on trains through Poland and Romania and could relate....
Thanks for the recommendations: the first three were on my list and I've seen Lives of Others which was very good but - I think - over-hyped and somewhat corny.
Interested in the Carlos flick - along similar theme watch The Baader-Meinhof Complex which I found to informative and enjoyable.
Cheers!
Hostel II (2007) - same as the original only the main characters are girls. Not a gory or scary as the first. Almost seems like it spoof if the original. Not worth your time unless its free AND you're curious
The Exterminator (1980) - a vigilante takes things into his own hands after his Ex-Vietnam military buddy gets assaulted on the dirty streets of NYC. some great one-liners, but a B-movie nonetheless
The Hound of Baskervilles (1939) - Nigel Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes in a classic who-dun-it case. Simple but amusing.
Angel Heart (1987) - Mickey Rourke & De Niro in a 50's detective caper. Not as fun as it sounds, sadly, but you do get to see Lisa Bonet's tits! She's in her prime in this movie.
El Juego de la Verdad (2004) - Spanish comedy about 2 couples. One of the guys is (mis)diagnosed with a terminal disease and his dying wish is to sleep with his best friend's girl. Great light comedy. Enjoyable
Le Valet (France, 2006) - A valet has to pretend to be the boyfriend of a supermodel so she can continue an affair with a married man. Very funny and well paced. Good acting throughout
The Education of Charlie Banks (2007) - Two kids in college have a deviant childhood friend who comes to visit and shakes things up. Not an Eisenberg fan at all, but the movie doesn't hold water - little character development and denouement. 5/10
Gangs of New York. watched it for the first time last night. Wow, what a film. Daniel Day Lewis is brilliant.
Red Riding Trilogy. Pretty good. The 2nd and 3rd episodes were the best.
Fell asleep to the Captain America Movie. Last movie I saw and liked (a lot) was 127 hours. I love crazy hiker shit.
Have returned from the cinema where I saw Anonymous, in which it is shown that Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford wrote the plays commonly attributed to someone called William Shakespeare.
The film: the interiors are superb; the costumes are -superb, at times the acting is -superb, truly. I didn't know Rhys Ifans before this but he is outstanding, as is Edward Hogg as Lord Robert Cecil.
As an historical film, it is, quite simpy, daft and inaccurate, as most historical films seem to be (Carlos, of recent vintage is typical of this pseudo-history on film).
Just to give a few examples: 1) there is no evidence that it was Edward who arranged for the Globe Theatre to perform Richard III to arouse the mob against Lord Robert Cecil -the Essex Rebellion of 1601 was motivated by other reasons, which may be why the Globe did arrange a play by Shakespeare to arouse the MOB, but it was Richard II.
2) In the film de Vere tells Ben Jonson that a nobleman such as he cannot be seen to write plays or have anything to do with the theatre, even though de Vere was in fact well-known as the leaseholder of the Blackfriars Theatre, and published poems under his own name in 1576.
3) Most bizarre of all, it is suggested that Queen Elizabeth had been knocked up several times since she was 16, that one of her bastard children was none other than Edward de Vere (she was 17 when he was born)...who then went on to have an affair with her producing: the Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley (pronounced Risley)...the dedicatee of the Sonnets....
Oh dear, what a farrago of nonsense and historical drivel. The music, as usual in these things, is orchestral soup and spinets; there are pistols which fire more than one shot without having to be re-loaded, and some bloke called William Shakespeare who has come down from darkest Warwickshire without a trace of anything other than a South London accent, and who is an illiterate twit with a love of money....
Revolution Summer (2007) - a hipster movie filmed & written by a hipster. The story says nothing but was that the point of the film? Is the film mocking the characters or are they that banal? BAD BAD BAD
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) - a John Carpenter movie about a gang that steal a bunch of guns and holds an defunct police station hostage. I don't recommend it.
Red State (2011) - 3 HS teens get caught up in a Christian cult's fanaticism. ATF arrives and it's all out war. Good acting, casting, plot, dialogue and pace; all around good movie. Thumbs up!!
Night Hawks (1981) - Sly Stallone vs Rutger Hauer in this 80's terrorist caper set in NYC.
The Robber (2010) - Austrian movie about an ex-con but amateur marathoner who has a craving for bank robberies. Not much character development and a bit slow and disconnected.
The Local (2008) - unsuccessful drug dealer getting the hit kick out of him everyday is propositioned by a rich guy to find his addicted daughter. Boring, underdeveloped, unimaginative. I fell alseep...
The Underneath (1995) - a gambler comes home for his mother's wedding and decides to stay in town. Gets a job as an armored car security guard and wants to hatch a job involving his ex-wife & her new boyfriend. Could have been good but the cast & crew just phoned it in
To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) - classic 80's LA flick about the Secret Service and a counterfeiter who killed his partner. Good acting - Willem Dafoe & William Petersen
Ceremony (2010) - two childhood friends go to the country to catch up, but run into an engagement party organized by a friend. One flames re-hatch and things get deep & wierd. You would normally find this theme in French/Danish movies. I really enjoyed the acting, plot and character development. Very good movie with a Great Gatsby influence
Crikey Bobby, you watch a lot. Is it just a hobby or is it tied in with your work?
I've only seen two off that list, Assault on Precinct 13 and To Live and Die in LA. Both were on tv and both passed the time pleasantly enough, but neither outstanding.
I've said elsewhere that I rarely seek out mainstream Hollywood fare as it seems to be mostly aimed at the lowest common denominator - that isn't being snobbish in any way, that's what the studios admit to - so it's either US indie, the occasional above average UK film, but mostly from the rest of Europe, with an emphasis on France, Spain and Germany. I'm currently waiting for two DVD's: Julia's Eyes, from Spain, and The Silence from Germany.
And most of all, the second series of the fantastic Danish police thriller The Killing which starts later this month on BBC4.
Shit, how did you see that? Did it ever get a US theatrical release? I remember there being some sort of to-do about this film getting released after it was shown at Sundance. Kevin Smith was auctioning it off or something? I can't remember. Is it on DVD already? Did it go straight to video? I really want to see it.
Just saw the movie In Time.
I watched 'Bad Teacher" with my cutie Cameron Diaz. I have never seen a bad movie from her yet. Bad Teacher is funny. And she still has a sweet little ass.
Madness.
Low budget, hillbilly, torture porn...From Sweden!
Nah, his SOP seems to be "act like a jackass and put those who call me out on ignore". Doubt he'll see half the stuff if any.
But does it work with thread titles? There seems to be a campaign resurrecting the worst of KIR from the last time around. Now back ro the movies:
I saw ""In Time" this weekend. If you like chicks with legs like that (and I do) you'll like the film. Otherwise there isn't much to recommend it- the metaphor is a bit too pat, and a bit too labored to really be interesting in this socio-political climate.
Just watched Bamboozled. Typical Spike Lee; good idea but way too long, points hammered over and over way too much.
Oh, on Halloween I watched the remake of Friday the 13th. It isn't too bad. Overall, well, the acting isn't great. But, well, it's a horror flick -- ha ha! :)
Jason is more deviant than ever.... Surprise! Surprise! -- ha ha!
I'd only recommend it if you're a horror fan. Otherwise give it a pass.
Friday The 13th (2009) - New Awesome HD Quality Movie Trailer - YouTube
I just got back from "The Skin I'm In". Anyone seen it?
Banderas is always kinda creepy but this takes the cake-
Eyes Wide Shut
