Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
The French Connection I, still an amazing film after all these years; everything about it works -the dialogue is sharp, the music is unobtrusive and often absent giving scenes more tension; the car chase remains one of the best on screen; and the lighting too gives the night scenes an edge. Friedkin made films the way Michael Mann does today. Brilliant.

The Dead.
A halfway decent zombie flick set in Africa.
-
Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I am watching The Day After Tomorrow right now as I make this post. I watched for the first time Quantum of Solace earlier.
-
Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
John Huston's final movie was also called The Dead - based on the Dubliners by James Joyce. Wonderful and I confess more my speed than a zombie film.

Totally valid, of course; I'm still laughing, though. Now watch this thread take a turn....

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
The Graduate. That film has a very special place in my heart because it comes painfully close to how I lost my virginity in my teens. Unfortunately I didn't end up with Katharine Ross though.

I'm thinking you'd not be into the last film I watched, either.
Some old skool violence with Robert De Nero, Jason Statham, Clive Owen (didn't recognize him at first) and Dominic Purcell.
Killer Elite
Very satisfying.
Though i think De Nero did it for the money! :shrug

Looking forward to seeing it on DVD. Directed by the brother of the guy who made In Bruges a couple of years ago, also starring Brendan Gleeson, and which was one of the quirkiest, funniest and darkest comedies of the last few years.
You would enjoy it too, I'm sure, Trish.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
In Bruges is a feeble excuse for a film, throughout the first half if not all of it the dim character walks around saying Fuck! and Bruges! presumably because he was intellectually challenged. The climax of the plot -insofar as there is a plot- is also unoriginal -I don't know when the trick was first used but it marks the climactic ending to Pinter's play The Dumb Waiter (1960). Another film with Gary Oldman that was so bad I wanted my money back. But then, if you rate another piece of 60s trash -The Graduate- then I guess our differences are unlikely to be breached on these two turkeys.

Um, Gary Oldman does not appear in In Bruges.

Ralph Fiennes was the actor imitating a block of wood, my mistake -like it makes any difference!

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Moon (2009) - one of the best sci-fi movies in the last 15 years. One character, Sam Rockwell, is ready to return home after spending 3 years on the Moon. The wheels begin to fall off the bus thereafter. Amazing acting & great suspense!!! Kevin Spacey is the computer voice, a 2001-Space Odyssey-HAL imitation. OUTSTANDING!!!!!
Solaris (2002) - self-revelation on a spaceship. Not convincing & drawn out. It's a shame because there are very good actors - George Clooney, Natascha McElhone. 3 hours of boredom.
The Hunted (2003) - complete shit. Similar cat & mouse a la Fugitive. Terrible
The Notebook (2004) - not as sappy as I presumed. decent love story and I'm a sucker for period pieces. Total chick flick but even if you eat nails for breakfast a dude could handle it. Don't understand why it was called The Notebook, I get it but the movie made one/two references
Pride & Glory (2008) - nuts & bolts NYC corrupt cop movie. This film opens nothing new (Colin Farrell, Ed Norton)
Spiral "Engrenages" Season 1 (2005) - French weekly police drama follows on case that includes politicos, pedophilia, prostitution. Each episode has a good pace and maintains high level of suspense
Submarine (2010) - coming-of-age story about a boy who wants to love his virginity & break up his mother's affair. The director makes bold decisions to make this genre stand apart
Traitor (2008) - Don Cheadle plays a bomb-making Muslim terrorist being pursued by FBI & CIA. Formulaic but watchable

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Bobby did you see the original Russian version of Solaris by Tarkovsky? At one time it was marketed as a Russian 2001 which was mainly because it was set on a space ship (!). Tarkovsky's film is a meditation on time, the space ship serves to detach the characters from 'normal time' and enables them to move forwards and backwards. It is not Tarkovsky's most successful film, but it is worth watching several times -I haven't seen the American version so I don't know how it compares.

Stavros, no I haven't but I will get it. Yes, the 2002 version is a remake. I kept falling asleep and could never get into the movie. I still have it on my computer so I won't delete it until I see Tarkovskiy's version. Steven Soderbergh directed this one, that's why I thought it couldn't be all bad.

But the vertically challenged actor had the only real character to play in the film, the rest were barking stereotypes of thick/wily Irishmen. You know really, this film should have been made in Luton, Macclesfield or Northampton but to name a film In Luton would not have done much for its box office appeal.

Yes, I should retract that. He was played by Peter Dinklage, who played the lead in one of the most beguiling films of the last decade, The Station Agent.
I suspect that at one end of the spectrum, Stavros, our views on movies would be fairly congruent, but at the other end, I'm quite happy to settle down with some relatively mainstream fare from time to time and don't judge it by the same standards that I would a Tarkovsky or Truffaut.
-
Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
The Station Agent -never a great film, but everything about it worked -script, acting, photography -I could happily watch that again. Its not that I demand art and/or high standards all the time, for entertainment I like the Bourne films, and thought the Oceans films were good examples of that kind of genre, for example -I react badly to laziness, feeble or non-existent characters, poor acting and so on. In Bruges from the moment it began was a pain, and it never relented, and let's be brutal, Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes are lucky to have careers in film.

I'm a fan of John Carpenter's earlier work. So I was curious to watch this fright flick.
It's okay. But his great work was done in the late 70s and early 80s.
