Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
TrollHunter - ok Norwegian mockumentary, not very exciting, nice scenic shots
Tokyo Gore Police - Japanese blood & guts exploitation, second half is better than first half
Story of a Junkie - follows an junkie life in mid-80's LES Manhattan. Shitty quality, but love the shots from the old neighborhood
Death Valley - MTV episode (Reno 911 plus zombies, vampires & werewolves) funny

Stavros - I cannot compare the TV series with the new fim (Tinker Tailor etc) because i never saw the TV show. This new film is grey and grave and lugubrious and sinister and intelligent.

A Serbian Film (uncut) - I fell asleep for the 3rd time watching this flick. I need to watch it a 4th time. All I can say is "Newborn Porn!!!!" I have some questions for Dino, if he sees this...

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Machete.... It was OK. I was curious to see it.
I wish they'd hire, say, Bailey Jay in the flick instead of Jessica Alba. But our country isn't, well, that left leaning yet. Sad to say....

PŘEŽÍT SVŮJ ŽIVOT (Surviving Life) - a wonderful new Czech animation film by the great animator Jan Svanmajer. Not released in the UK or US yet, but its a moving and funny and weird film about sleep, dreams and the oedipus complex.

European 21 -thanks for the link to Svankmajer -he is a brilliant satirist -I ended up watching the football film whose name I forget, and The Death of Stalinism in Bohemia, which is wickedly funny, if grim at the end...

Closely Observed Trains is one of my favourite films of all time. A brilliant satire on the sclerotic nature of Czech/Soviet bureaucracy, carefully disguised as a loyal polemic about the nazis. I saw it many years ago in the old Glasgow Film Theatre, and when I bought it recently on DVD was delighted to find that it is still every bit as fresh, sharp and relevant as when it was first released.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
A new French production called "The Artist" - black and white and silent! It's all about the moment when the silent movies gave way to the talkies at the end of the 920s. A very novel and rather cute film which references the style and approach of the romantic melodramas of the era. It's actually "in English"(ie the captions are in English). Really original.

Aliens yesterday... and i am about to watch it again today for the 200th time :)
-
Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Two days running... wow. Is the alien bursting out of John Hurt's chest the bit that makes you keep coming back? For me the best thing about the whole series of Alien films was Sigourney Weavers role. Good to see a really strong female character in sci fi.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Sleepaway Camp - pretty awesome. I haven't seen a, kitchy, low-budget, early-80's thriller in a while.
Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS Poster - erotic, silly, TITTIES!!!

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Last night watched a new French thriller on DVD, A Bout Portant, Point Blank in English, and NOT a remake of John Boorman's excellent US thriller of the same name from 1967.
Directed by Fred Cavaye, who made the equally gripping Anything for Her, badly remade in the US as The Next Three Days, it is a taut, relentless thriller in the mode of Tell No One, and I can't offer higher praise than that. It starts as a kidnap and develops with various twists into a police corruption thriller. I don't think I drew breath in the entire 80 minutes. It's yet another demonstration that in addition to the arthouse and leftfield aspects, French mainstream cinema remains the best in the world.
Watch the original before Hollywood fucks it up again.

The French make great movies......Tell No One, La Haine, Cache, I've Loved You So Long, L'Appartement, Manon des Sources, Vatel, Inspector Bellamy are a few that I have watched recently. They really seem to understand storytelling is an art.....

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I watched Green Lantern for the first time last night. I have to say, people were wayyyy to harsh on that movie! Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a work of art or anything, but I truly enjoyed the movie! Ryan Reynolds did a great job as Green Lantern, and hopefully will do an even better job as Deadpool!

Watched 'Fast Five' against my better jugement,a crass, bombastic, imperialistic load of crap.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I tend to agree with Bobby Domino and RobertLouis re French films of recent vintage, I like Jacques Audiard -A Prophet, in particular. I also recently watched those Chris Marker films on one dvd: La Jetee, and Sans Soleil -Marker (named after the pen!) must be one of the most original film-makers in the last 50 years, I failed to see most of the ones the NFT showed in the 1980s and that was a mistake as they are rarely shown and I dont think they are on dvd.

A Prophet was a wonderful surprise!!! I literally fell upon that movie. One of the best threads, imo. I've seen so many new movies as a result. Cheers, all!!!

Have you seen Mesrine, Bobby? Vincent Cassel has never been better.

You know what's funny, I watch so many movies, one after the other, I had to go back to my library of "viewed films" to confirm. And yes, I have seen it, but I vaguely remember anything, except Cassel's 70's mustache.
There is a movie I'd like to recommend in the same light as Mesrine. It's called, Carlos (2010), a biopic of the Venezuelan global terrorist all the way through the mid-90's.
I believe it's a 3-part movie/episode similar to Mesrine. The actor, Édgar Ramírez, is incredible!! He speaks 5 languages fluently throughout and the filming is outstanding.
I smoked many cigarettes watching that one, lol
However, I'm a big fan of Dobermann (1997), a bank job à la francaise, Natural Born Killer/Pulp Fiction-style of movie, with Cassel and Bellucci. I believe that movie is what got them together. It's really well done.
Also Killing Zoe, with Eric Stoltz & Jean-Hugues Anglade (from Betty Blue) but then I could go forever......

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Mesrine was certainly a tour de force for Vincent Cassell, but i loathed that film. it seemed to have no real point apart from being a grim catalogue of one man's deeply unpleasant rampage through the world. Far better was last year's little seen six hour film on Carlos the jackal. It had political human and moral points to make as well as a cracking story.
-
Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
I agree with Prospero, the perennial problem with biographical films is they leave stuff out -in the end, Mesrine was a criminal who sought self-glorification and justification he didn't deserve.
Went last night to see Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy -made up of approximately 60 three-minute scenes which prevent any character development, the 'spies' are stereotypes: the suave, laid-back ladies man; the excitable and ambitious shorty; the immigrant who wears bow-ties; and the other one (Ciaran Hinds) who doesn't do anything. There are aso the obligatory queers, and the sex-driven field agent who, guess what, falls for a blonde Russian on the other side. John Hurt plays John Hurt, as he has now become the go-to guy if you need end-of-career wise-but-worn-out; the dress-code is 1950s-60s even though it claims to be 1973; there is a phone-booth with stickers even though these didn't appear until the 1980s, and so on. The shock that there is a mole at the top of the intelligence service lacks credibility even in 1973 given that it had already happened with Burgess and Maclean in the 1940s-50s; much of the film is shot in half-light; the story is thin, the characters thinner, it is a complete waste of time and had it been possible, I would have asked for my money back, but the box office was closed.

Re: What is The Last Movie You Watched?
Lisa do you see many Filipino films? I wanted to see a film called Lola by Brillante Mendoza, esp after his earlier film Kinatay won an award at Cannes a few years ago...I can't get hold of The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela...None of these films ever make it to the Uk.
