There is no photographic or video evidence/confirmation of bin laden's body. Also it was stated he was buried at sea within hours of his death. So no physical evidence. Why couldnt they arrest him, use tear gas or sleeping gas etc?

Some will now argue it is a publicity stunt and he was not even captured

There will be pictures. Besides, what did people expect?? We were going to fly his body back to the U.S. and drag him through the streets??

His body was never going to be formally shown to the public anyway.

It doesn't make us any safer. Aymoun al Zawhiri the "deputy leader" while, not having Bin Laden's mystique, was always a more intelligent strategist than Osama himself - and he is alive and well. Besides al-Queda is not a centralised organisation - it is an idea, a franchise.... and al-Queda globally is horribley alive and well. So the war will surely go on (and on and on and on)

Is there a tradition of burial at sea within Islam though? I understand all the rationale for the US forces doing so, just hope that it has been done in strict accordance with the appropriate ritual.

And for anyone who says it doesn't matter, I've been listening to radio reports from Pakistan, which was already a powder keg and may now simply be waiting to explode.

Not sure if there is a burial at sea tradition but at least the US observed the need for a swift internment. No parading of his corpse in the way that US bodies are often displayed such as in iran or Somaiia. That is a lot of respect for a man hugely instrumental in the mass murder of 9/11.

On June 5, 2006, the Muckraker Report contacted the FBI Headquarters, (202) 324-3000, to learn why Bin Laden’s Most Wanted poster did not indicate that Usama was also wanted in connection with 9/11. The Muckraker Report spoke with Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI. He was found in what's been described as a "luxury compound", near a city in what has been described as Pakistan's main holiday playground for the wealthy. That's hardly the portrait of the ascetic living a holy and subsistence life that's always been painted in the past.

So there's a hope, however slight, that some of the kids all over the world who have been fanaticised into following his example might now see him as a hypocrite living in comfort and reconsider their stance.

I agree with your regional assessment, but the world danger is the US going into Pakistan in that event, especially if an Islamist regime has already been installed. And with the Islamist party deeply invested in the ISI and the military establishment, this could be just the excuse needed for another military coup, but this time with a dedicated Islamist direction.

That's true - but I think a regional war with india might kick-off sooner. What China might do in that event (bearing in mind their own little Islamist problem ) is intriguing.

Sadly it isn't. While the presence of large numbers of US and other nato forces in Afghanistan serves two purposes - one to attempt to stabilise a country that has successfully resisted every previous attempt to do so, so good luck with that one, and secondly it means that there are forces available in the region should the situation in Pakistan fall into anarchy or worse. In my view this event potentially changes all the political undertakings to withdraw by 2014.

McLaurin tells the story of a slave girl named Celia. We only know her as Celia, she has no other name. Robert Newsom, a plantation owner in Callaway, Missouri, purchased her at age 14. Newsom was recently widowed and it seems he purchased Celia with a sexual motive. As he brought her back to the farm, he raped her. From then on, Newsom "visited" Celia often in a cabin he provided for her which was very close to the main household. Over the years, Celia had two children with Newsom, which he considered "his property".

There were four other slaves on the plantation, but they were all men, so it was hard for Celia to confide in anyone. Soon, however, Celia formed a relationship with the slave George. By this time, the girl is 19 years old and is pregnant again. George is aware of what Newsom is doing and gives Celia an ultimatum - either she tell Newsom to leave her alone, or he would leave her.

When Newsom came to her cabin, Celia told him she wouldn't allow him to come anymore. However, Newsom didn't care since HE was HER master. He proceeded to rape her again. However, Celia hit him over the head with a club with intentions to wound him, but it was a fatal blow instead. Thus, the trial of Celia begins.

The rest of the story is history; wonderful history. The author combines a great story with historical facts. This makes the book very interesting. It's not like you're reading a history book, which is just plain facts. This book makes it fun and easy to learn. The information about the trial is factual, but since McLaurin put it in a story-like form, it is very interesting.

This is a great book to read if you are interested in what it was like to be a slave, or even if you need to do some kind of report. The author touches on so many aspects of a slaves' life. Taking place in the 1850's. McLaurin discusses the Dred Scott Case, tensions between bordering states, and regional/national elections. A huge part of this story focuses on the different laws of the time. For example:

-Is a slave 3/5 of a person?
-Does a slave have rights?
-Is a slave considered property?
-Is a slave considered a man or woman?

Celia is assigned lawyers, since a slave isn't allowed to testify in court - Can you believe the ridiculous laws back then? If a slave can't testify, how is he/she supposed to state his/her side of the story?

I don't want to give away all of the details of the trial, but there is one crucial element that I want to discuss a little bit. The issue is discussed of whether Celia is considered a woman. White women had the right to defend themselves against a man who was forcing himself upon her. Celia is a woman, so this law should apply to her as well. After all, she was only defending herself from this man. This discussion was a huge turning point during the trial. The jury and judge had to decide whether or not Celia had this right. It was such a big issue because it would totally change the law around. If she was a woman, she would have this right and it would make slave women more equal with white women. This would, in turn, take away some of the powers of the slave holder. If she did not have this right, things would remain the same and Celia would be hung.

By the end of the book, after much fighting and debating, Celia is pronounced guilty. The story illustrates just how terrible the life of a slave could be. The author put so much into this piece and made it so thorough that you don't just learn about the history while the trial is going on. Instead, he dedicated a couple of chapters to give you some background on the subject and to show the reader what is influencing the judge and jury's decision. (That is the part of the book that gets a little bit boring, because it really isn't in a story format, but just fact after fact on paper). Also, some parts of the book are a little bit hard to understand, this is not an extremely easy reader.

"Celia, A Slave" is a great historical book that is well written and actually fun to read. I really didn't think I would like the book when I first got it, I was actually a little bit hesitant, but it turned out just fine in the end.

I believe Hitler said something similar folowing Jesse Owens winning 4 golds at the Berlin Olympics, he claimed the black man had an in built advantage over white runners. When it later came out that the Nazis practiced eugenics and strived to create a new 'pure aryan race', which failed anyway, creative writers after the war started writing about slave breeding plantations in the US.

Another point which shoots the 'breeding' myth to bits, is that other sports like cycling has sprinting and long distance aspects to it, which would favour black athletes. However no black cyclists has ever won the tour de france. That sport is dominated by white athletes also skiing, swimming, rowing, weight lifting etc. Yet no one asks questions whether white athletes are better equipped at them like blacks are supposed to be in sprinting.

1753 Etienne Broyard, Bliss Broyard's fourth great grandfather, arrives in New Orleans from La Rochelle, France, a white soldier in the French Royal Army. Approximately half of the 3,000 people living in New Orleans at this time are slaves.

1855 Henry Antoine Broyard and Marie Pauline Bonnet, Bliss Broyard's great, great grandparents, marry in 1855. Pauline is a free person of color, and because marriage between blacks and whites is prohibited, Henry lists himself as "FPC," a free person of color, on the marriage license. Marie Pauline's family is among the 10,000 refugees from Saint Domingue, later renamed Haiti, who came to New Orleans after the colony's fight for independence.

1862 Henry Broyard's regiment, the First Louisiana Native Guard Infantry, is the first black regiment in the Union Army to enter the Civil War in September, 1862.

1920 Anatole Broyard is born in 1920. In 1927, Paul and Edna Broyard abandon New Orleans for Brooklyn, N.Y., bringing Anatole and his two sisters with them.

1990 New York Times critic and essayist Anatole Broyard dies of cancer. His wife, Alexandra, tells his daughter Bliss and son Todd that their father is part black, descended from Creoles in New Orleans.

Race is an old concept that should probably be discarded. It was

created by people who had a very limited knowledge of their world. If you

look at any genetic map (mitochondrial or Y chromosome DNA), you can

see there is no biological basis for the idea of a white or black or asian

race.

According to a former CIA guy interviewed on the BBC today Clinton didn't really want to catch Bin Laden out of concern for US image at the time. Bush couldn't - though they say that the US Government knew about this location four years ago, but the operation to kill him took a long time to plan in detail.

I thought in a Clinton interview with someone from Fox News that he wanted to capture/kill bin Laden. He had intel on bin Laden, but just couldn't do it.

Unfortunately, despite my earlier post, I am aware of that. In fact, it is quite possible that if we had stayed around after semi-covertly helping them push the Soviets out of there, bin Laden and his merry band would never have even existed. I am well aware that we are going to be stuck in the region for the foreseeable future if for no other reason then to prevent a disastrous war between Pakistan and India.

Then again if Mayans are correct, withdrawal by 2014 becomes a moot point.:)

The Mayans didn't predict their own demise, so their record as forecasters is shaky to say the least lol.

It is strange this thread has taken on a different tone. From Osama to Politics to Race to future predictions.

Personally, I feel some redemption over his death. Having deployed 4 times (twice to Iraq) it is as if all that hard work is now justified. Actually, I had given up hope he would ever be caught/found. However, I just continued to do my duty because that is what soldiers do.

I am not sure what will become of this. Do I feel safer? I never felt unsafe anyway.

As for politics, my boss is the Commander and Chief, whoever that may be, and my job is to carry out his orders. I have no political leanings, just that the guy in charge do a good job. And I am happy Bin Laden is dead.

Obama will get the credit for this operation for sure, and so he should. He is the one who authorized the operation.

On a humorous note, I too cannot believe that I found out about Bin Laden's death on Hung Angles. To me that is kind of crazy.
