The corollary to cognitive dissonance is denial--either that, or coming to terms with a hard, hated and feared truth.

In other words, people who have supported the U.S. government, or at least who have believed that it isn't possible that the U.S. government could commit mass-murder against its own citizens via staged attacks in order to obtain more funding, power and control, and who thus cannot come to terms with that fact, suffer from cognitive dissonance, since to come to terms with that fact would mean that they would have to come to terms with having lived a lie. Hence, in order to avoid coming to terms with this hard, hated and feared truth, said peope go into denial, caused by their cognitive dissonance (i.e., their state of uneasiness at the thought of having lived a lie).
