I saw all three of those movies, and I thought they were all great. As far as the actresses go, it doesn't really matter to me who plays the part as long as the movie is beliveable and well acted. I thought all the leading actresses (or actors... depending on how you look at it) did a very good job in all three movies.
By the way, I loved the catch phrase that they used in A Soldiers Girl. I think it was something like "She was the only man he ever loved" GREAT!!!
There are also a lot of other great Transgendered movies out there. I have rented many from netflix (not porn movies, just good Transgendered movies both foreign and domestic).
I don't know about that Kelly. I have seen some people, older Transitioning TS's who after FFS BAS SRS and thousands of hours of electrolysis still look like Fred Flintsone in a dress. Age, Testosterone, and a hard hypermasculine life of trying to "hide it" will do that to you.
I think the point in TransAmerica of not having someone really hot, was to emphasize the vulnerability of the character.Quote:

I still think one of the better depictions of a transsexual on film is Terrence Stamps turn as Bernadette in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. I thought it was a beautifully nuanced performance. It's a comedy but there is some genuine depth behind much of that film.
1. Soldier's Girl
Lee Pace did not look like Calpurina Addams but I believe they cast relatively unknown actors (or actors who are def not a-listers) because it was a made for tv movie AND it, in 2003, was a controversial topic. moreover, lee pace is not very feminine, and far less feminine in drag than calpernia therefore it helped sell the image of the "risque" nature of a regular relationship. Given the 2003 climate, the military angle and that it is based on calpernia's own account, i think this film did a fine job with portraying a love denied and i am fine with lee pace's look and job in the role.
2. Transamerica
this movie, i feel got completely too much attention for its subject matter over its performances. it isn't a good movie. it isn't well produced, acted, written, etc. it, like brokeback and many other movies, it was just covered heavily in the media because it was different. Huffman was ok in her role but ultimately, i don't think it was really that challenging for her to play a woman on the road to self discovery.
3. didn't see it
I don't think mainstream society has evolved to the point where larger producers would risk transwoman actors in main roles. having roles go to relatively unknown actors in indie films and having established stars in gender bending roles seems far more palatable and profitable. change is slow...but its happening.
After watching Soldiers Girl and thinkng about it a bit, I think Lee Pace did a good job and was cast well, despite not looking as good as Calpernia Adams.
I think it was important for the story that Lee Pace's character was clockable but still pretty and appealing enough to see the attraction and the risk involved in the relationship. If she was too passable the drama would not work.
There are films which are about the transgendered experience, and films in which transexuals are characters -I tend to prefer the latter.
Nevertheless,
Beautiful Boxer (2004), about a transexual in Thailand who becomes a kick-boxer is based on a true story. The actor doesn't really convince as a woman but its a good film within its limitations.
The Crying Game (1992) -Jaye Davidson looks good but the film is hysterical nonsense with an overlay of spurious Irish Republican politics.
Saint Jack (1979) was shot in Singapore and includes a scene in which ladyboys from the (now defunct) Bugis St market are taken back to a hotel for sex.
Gozu (Takshi Miike 2003) includes transexual characters in a hallucinogenic cafe in Japan.
Zatoichi (2003) includes a transgendered character; great film by the way.
Gun Hill Road (Rashad Green, 2011)
May be the most serious film involving a transexual since Boys Don't Cry; unfortunately it is not available in the UK so I haven't seen it.
