I imagine pulling it out would have escalated the situation but I have to wonder what happened to her gun or was this the one time she just forgot it, seems like that would have been an easy case of self defense.

Sounds like there were several robbers. One gun against two doesn't sound like good odds with two unarmed friends in the room.

Yes, but I don't think that's really an issue here. Most people will carry a gun when outside, they won't physically have it on them when at home because being robbed at home isn't something you'd expect.
And as you later said, it would have made things far far worse anyway.
