A Smiths mood sounds like a total downer to me...

It's Morrissey who is the driving force behind them. His solo work is equally gloomy.

Thanks for posting the Dick and Mimi material, Prospero! It's a shame they are largely forgotten now. Their second (and last whilst Dick was alive) album, Reflections in a Crystal Wind, is one of my all-time favorite albums, a masterpiece from opening chord to closing notes.
Right now I'm listening to another classic, Boss Guitar, by one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time, the incomparable Wes Montgomery. It's a thing of beauty.
For those who associate Steve Hackett exclusively with Genesis and rock music, here's his other side. Excerpts from a tone poem he composed, based on A Midsummer Night's Dream. I was privileged to be at some of the recording sessions for this in a church in Belsize Park with full orchestra. Just a little bit emotional at the brass crescendo as the sun burst through the stained glass!

All to often rock musicians who reach out to try and compose "serious" music end up with a ludicrous pastiche. McCartney's classical work for instance is largely embarassing. Hackett seems to have hacked it somehow - at least on the strength of the clip RL posted. Lovely guitar work. And what sounds like a real grand organ.
Modern extended 'serious" music is in a dilemma right now though - and while this piece by Hackett is very enjoyable it is scarcely hugely innovative.
Tonight i am going to hear one of the late masters of modern classical music (classical is an inadequate term) The Turangalila Symphony by Olivier Messiaen - his orchestral masterwork.
