As for being naive... It isn't naive to have some compassion for people every once in a while. It is being human. With a "donation" link in her signature, asking for rent help just seems over the top. I am glad no one was hurt though.

If $550 was taken, and was supposed to be used for rent, I imagine that there is more money around, I don't believe for a minute that was the last $550 the three ladies have. People usually ask for help when they don't have any other outs. If you have the money, then you have options, to ask for help in those situations makes it known that you don't have any concern for the people that would be helping you.

I never contested your second point but one doesn't have anything to do with the other. Unless of course, you're stating that we should withhold understanding and compassion from all people based upon the foolish things they may say at any given time.
