Flame wars are sort of like a colonic irrigation for the board. They can help to clear the air just as a colonic clears your rectum and colon (or so I've been told- I've never had one). The problem is that even when you wash the shit away, it gets back in there somewhere sooner or later.
Or you could say that flaming is like a family vendetta. Fortunately, flaming does not usually involve guns or high explosives. Not yet, but Vicki has been talking to some people about changing that, apparently.
Or you could say that flaming is good, because it all allows us to get things out in the open, kind of like skinny dipping. It refreshes parts that cannot usually be reached (in this case our thirst for using four letter words at our place of work or home without losing our job or friends).
Flaming is all about equal opportunities too. Everybody gets flamed. Abuse is an equal-opportunity benefit.
Often, flame wars make us laugh. Personally, I thought it was very funny when I told TFan that I didn't think he was stupid but that he merely gave a very good impression of being very stupid. It is nice to use expressions like "if a cannibal cracked your head open, he wouldn't find enough to spread on a small water biscuit" or "my mother told me not to argue with assholes" or "I can't talk any more- I'm allergic to morons". Thus flaming can be fun, especially if you are arguing against someone without brains. But entering a flaming war may be enough proof that you're somewhat lacking in the brain department too.
So flaming is bad. Really, really bad. Stop it. Like now. Immediately. Bad, bad thing. Okay?
Here's where I stand on this matter:
I personally think Flame wars doesnt do anyone any good. No benefits to it whatsoever!
However, some flame wars are good in a sense that It puts things back in perspective (for the benefit of those who didnt knew any better) to get a much clearer picture of an issue/ies and or character and credibility of a person!
That's all! :P

But, like the Eagle scout, I will fight, I am a warrior, though I prefer
to fight for peace.
Eagle Scout is a positive, constructive Warrior who endeavors to
submit original articles which contain useful content and relevant
information with supporting citations and links, thus initiating meaningful
discussion threads. Eagle Scout regards the internet as an uplifting,
egalitarian, worldwide arena for the exchange of ideas among intelligent,
thinking individuals.
He does not openly attack, but will (ever tactfully) chastise disruptive
comments, gratuitous insults and cretinous insipidity. He is always kind
and helpful to Newbie, and will shrug off even the most egregious insults.
Eagle Scout is loathed with a poisonous intensity by Evil Clown, Jerk,
Enfant Provocateur and Ego.
CAUTION: Sometimes Imposter, Evil Clown or Troller will masquerade
as Eagle Scout. There have also been reports of Eagle Scout becoming
Jekyl and Hyde.
Diplomat butts into hot disputes, presuming that the combatants
will welcome and appreciate his even-handed and eminently reasonable
mediation. Frankly, he gets what he deserves.
This all goes back to the days of Usenet Newsgroups when they were really bad. Thankfully they haven't got their guns out on here yet..

Agreed... If you put two people in a room, at some point they will disagree. Put three people in a room and at some point, there will be a clique (at least on an issue) and an outsider. From that point on, it's a numbers game.
Rather than looking at how other folks behave, it's often in one's own best interest to look at how you yourself behave. Having been the victim of my own hubris in the past, I've learned not to take myself too seriously. Being Icaurus ain't all it's cracked up to be.
That said, you can debate until the cows come home as to whether there are benefits in a forum to a flame war... regardless of what you believe, they ARE going to happen, even in the most rigidly moderated forums.
I've only been a member here for a short while, and frankly, was kind of surprised to see this eruption. (Granted, I spend most of my posting time in Politics and Religion and flames in there are no real surprise... but in here, man!!) Take a look at what the source of conflict is - the issue of what's real and what's not.
It's the INTERNET, f'chrissakes!!! Anyone can be anyone or anything at any time. Currently, I'm a My Little Pony figurine made out of Mallomars. Tomorrow I could be a blue iguana wearing spats.
Reality took a backseat in cyberland a long time ago, folks. At best, look at it as an interactive novel to avoid any undue stress.
There's a lot of things I COULD say regarding the participants in the current hullygully going on here, but they wouldn't be constructive, would only fan the flames higher and probably taste like alum by bedtime.
At some point, if I hang around here long enough, I'll get piled on. If it's due to something boneheaded I've done, I hope I have the strength of character to acknowledge that I fucked up. Doing that tends to stop things in their tracks. If I'm chicken scratched over something specious, hopefully I'll have the strength of character to remember it's just a friggin' forum on the internet, let it roll and go off to ogle some party pics or something.
After all, iguanas are known for their thick skins.
How bizarre. We both came up with the same thing. :)Quote:

It's very rare, and subject to a lot of negative prodding or some passionate opinion on an issue, that I will poke someone in the eye. On the flip-side, if I am poked (As I have been from time to time, here on HA) I tend to take some time off before posting a response, if any.
I was even flamed on an Ebay forum, by someone aptly named 'ignorantpuppy', but took a day before responding (And then never did) while voicing my thoughts to friends and co-workers (Who stroked my ego to no end by giving me a thumbs up and saying "Sweeeeeet" as regards my considered responses).
Granted, there are a few that I could trounce with some skilled parries with big words, but I was taught to be kind to dumb animals.
From an economic standpoint, are flame wars good?
Do they get more feet under the seats. Do more people come to
the board, and perhaps make purchases, etc?
Or is is more like a bunch of people looking at car accidents, with many
of them being turned off by the gore and carnage.
Botton line, are flame wars, good for the bottom line?
