You guys are so pessimistic. Life on Earth is advertising itself all the time. The song of birds, the peacock’s plumage, the croaking of frogs, the bright wings of butterflies. Surely if we put our ad in the cosmic-craigslist, we’ll attract some hot green babes who’ll want to mate with us. Or maybe some shy, rich daddies to spend their money on us.
The problem is we have no idea what the risk is in comparison to other risks we take. Take the family out for a Sunday drive and you might get them all killed. Spend all day Sunday cooped up with them, and you might all kill each other. I will admit, risking the lives of everyone on the planet takes more balls than merely risking the lives of everyone in your immediate family; but what with all our nuclear weapons and secret biological weapons labs, someone on this planet must already have quite pair.
Should we discover and contact a technological civilization light-years beyond our system, I would like to think the rarity and wonder of each other’s existence would set the tone of our relationship. But that’s only what I would like to think. The hardwired, reptilian part of my brain, the basal ganglia, is more cautious...more suspicious. Not only instinct but reason pushes me toward caution: I’m inclined to think that both of us and them are living populations, prone to exponentially expand into all available niches, and have at our fingertips and pod-tips all the survival techniques developed by eons of evolution that allow us to exploit other life forms to fulfill our needs.
On the other hand, I would be so fucking excited should we ever make contact, I would be the first volunteer to be beamed up. But I’m not holding my breath. Certainly not bettin’ the ranch. I think there’s life all over the place out there (like the hollow little blue and green balls with an enduring love of Jesus that may inhabit Titan). But my uneducated guess is that the chances of contacting a technological civilization is the same order of magnitude as steppin’ off the curb in Swett, South Dekota and getting run over by a taxi.

It’s interesting to speculate on what a conversion would be like if each message sent traveled for fifty years before it was received. That would be a minimum of a century between each message and its reply. If the replies were composed by committees as dysfunctional as...say... the U.S. House of Congress, it may take an additional fifty years to get each message written. It would be a very slow conversation. We can’t even keep our language from mutating on us in those time scales. It might be easier to just play a long distance game of chess.
Someone must’ve thought about the strategies one might adopt to optimize the flow of such conversations. Perhaps the most effective format would be something like a cosmic Facebook. Each civilization keeps sending updates: pictures of our meals, the latest fads, fashions, music, stories, films, news, scientific advances etc. Every once in a while to spice things up we can have a flame war. But given the distances between us, they never escalate into anything physical.
...unless we reveal too much about our neurophysiology. The aliens might be able to embed a mind virus in one of their messages and convert the entire human race into mindless zombie slaves who willingly throw every single intragalactic chess match. Oh, the horror!

Actually, I was the one being pessimistic. Whereas there may be a hundred (at least 65 ) exoplanets within 50 light-years of us, there are some which are closer. Gliese 876 (only 15 light years away) is a red dwarf that is known to have a planetary system. Two super-Earths are now known to orbit Kapteyn’s Star only 12 light-years from us. The planets are known to us as Kapteyn a and b. ( http://arxiv.org/abs/1406.0818 )
A spacecraft raveling at one-tenth the speed of light (an expensive and hazardous speed), it would take 120 years to traverse the distance. Cosmic-Facebook communication would be somewhat less tedious. There would only be about half a century to wait between message and reply.

I think the nearest earth-like planet that is about the same environment as Venus is only about 20 ly away. Of course, any inhabitants would not be using Facebook, but MySpace! As we have all given up on our MySpace accounts we will never know about their existence.
Fifty years to get a "like" - I'd wait for that

YouTube is also a good source for a short film which shows that the Maya or ancient aliens had nothing to do with one or thirteen crystal skulls, which was, quite simply, a marketing campaign designed to make money for the people concerned...short film debunks this nonsense here-
