...for anyone else who may be bothered by this problem, here's the deal...if you right click the thumbnail and Open image in new tab you get the full sized image. If you then right click that full new tab image and click Save Image As, which is what I was doing....you get the generic bogus name every time. But, if you right click the thumbnail and save LINK as...bingo....you get the actual definitive filename and the image is saved as the full original size.
