Amazing, how Shostakovich wrote the 7th symphony during the horrible siege of Leningrad, as seemingly everybody was gradually dying from the bombing or hungerness. He insisted on having the “Leningrad”, as he entitled it, performed in the city in 1942. I remember witnesses telling how, as they were repeating for the representation, members of the orchestra kept disappearing one after another. Yet, in 1942, it was given to the public in the city under Shostakovich direction's himself, despite the horror.
It is estimated that close to 2 million people died during the siege.
