The problem isn't so much that they can't get real jobs, it's just difficult to turn down easy money. Anybody can get a job. I went to a temp agency a few months ago and had a job that same day. But I was loading heavy boxes into semi trucks for 8-12 hours a day for $8/hour.
I can't really blame someone for choosing a job that makes $200+/hour, but at the same time these girls can't say there's no way they can get a regular job.

I'm far from an expert on how many T-girls are escorts, or what percentage, etc. I've hung out in T-girl bars when traveling, talked to different girls, participated in forums like these, and I'd say that the majority are not escorts.
It seems to me that a lot of the t-girl escorts are foreign-born and I suspect are illegal immigrants. Just look at eros.com and see how many of the girls are latina or some other nationality. It's the same in many of the bars. Foreigners, who may not have job skills, may be from impoverished countries, may not have language skills, may be poorly educated don't have a lot of choices. So they turn to escorting or porn.
Also, some of the T-girls I've met seem to do hooking part-time. They might have another job, get disability, foodstamps, etc., and just supplement their income on the weekends by turning a trick or two. Most of them probably live pretty frugally. You probably won't see their pics on eros.com or porn sites, but they probably are a lot more prevalent than the higher-end escorts that you see on eros.com.
Some who are passable and live in stealth hold down regular jobs and no one even knows about their transitioning. Or maybe they aren't passable, but nobody cares. I used to go to a straight neighborhood bar where a t-girl was the bartender. Because of her voice, most people who went to the bar knew she was a t-girl, but nobody really cared. She was friendly, she was fun, and she flashed her tits every once in awhile when things got a little dull.
In the city I live in there are maybe a couple dozen t-girl escorts that advertise regularly. I'm sure that in a metro area of 2 million there are a lot more t-girls that simply live "normal" lives (i.e. working at non-sexual jobs). In fact, I see a lady every so often that appears to be a t-girl working in normal places, presumably leading "normal" lives.
I suspect that that category is the vast majority. Most t-girls can find some way to survive without escorting. Escorting is a tough way to live -- you have to worry about cops, disease, crazies, etc. Most people -- gg, tg, male -- couldn't handle it. I'm not sure if anyone's ever studied tg prostitutes, but gg prostitutes, strippers, and other sex workers have a much higher incidence of having been sexually abused as children. I suspect that the same is true of many tg sex workers. The ones who had more conventional upbringings aren't as likely to turn to escorting.

These individuals also are keenly aware of their rights/and or how to use the system to their benefit (just as gay males have done). The recent case of a local Florida government official fighting a public battle to keep her job and have the state/local area pay for her transitioning is a recent example, but there are others. There are pre and post op trannies in many walks of life, from LE to sanitation (no lie, there is a post op trannie garbarge person in NYC), less one thinks less of the latter example, you have no idea how good a job civil service can be especially when health and other benefits are factored in.
Now is picking up trash any where as glamourous as escorting? Probably not, but the later has a much more secure future than the former. I'm not saying many GLT people haven't at one time or another "dated", heck some very famous people have done so if rumours are to believed. The point is escorting rarely in of itself builds any sort of stable and secure future. Yes, one can earn vast sums of money, but that is not the same as building wealth, and in any event for a large percentage of those working that money goes as fast as it comes. In the end most end their productive careers with very little to show for the mental, physical and emotional toll escorting for years can take.
There is the other factor that while some people may dislike trannies, many more hate escorts/sex workers. Americans have this thing about sex and for some a greater thing about religion. Fallen women - those that would willing sell themselves just gets up these people's backs and they cannot get over it. First, I never said that all trannie escorts were foreign-born -- I said that a large percentage were. If you look on eros, which represents the higher echelon of escorts, there's a large percentage. If you look at Craigslist,
you'll see an even higher percentage of foreign-born or minority trannies. If you go to bars, clubs, or you look at streetwalkers, you'll see an even higher percentage, most likely. At least that's my observation.
I've travelled and been to tranny bars and clubs throughout the U.S., and I've run into numerous girls who don't speak English. When I speak to them in Spanish, I learn that they're foreign born. I suspect that if he had more lenient immigration laws, many of these girls would get normal jobs, rather than working in the underground economy (i.e. hooking, escorting, whatever you want to call it.)
I also doubt that there's this huge hidden underground of high-class tranny escorts who never advertise. There might be a few who only cater to the wealthy, but they still have to find their clients. Since most wealthy tranny-chasers keep their proclivities very confidential, they have to be able to find these girls somewhere.
I also said that most trannies were NOT sex workers. I agree with you that they are in all walks of life. Even though there's not a large visible transexual population in the city I live in, I run into them periodically in different types of occupations.
