New York city was part of the original 13 colonies, which all had slaves. Things changed a little after the War of Independence and split between the mason-dixon line. Didnt they find an ancient negro burial ground in NEwy York when they were building an office block a few years ago.

Secondly Were they victims of the segregation which was finally outlawed in the 1960s? I read that NY had has much segregation problems as the south. For instance in the nearby Pentagon building, when it was built it had double the number of toilets. That was because govenment or public buildings had to have seperate toilets for 'whites and coloureds'.

I also said in another post that my Grandparents were NOT that friendly with blacks. Well not at first. Yes New York is segregated. But most of the fighting was NOT black vs. white but Irish vs. Italians and Polish Jews. So my family never had any problems with blacks, and as they got older they learned to respect blacks and other people who had it hard in this country.

Funny that you should mention that. I too, make it a habit to make eye contact, but one particular week I decided make a conscious decision to greet people who passed me to see the reactions. Being black, I noticed other blacks (particularly men) were more apt to make eye contact and either nod or say "hey," while hispanics tended to look at me quizically while occasionally responding.

I also noticed people closer to my age range were more likely to respond, while often times people a generation or two ahead of me didn't bother looking at me much lol. I live near a transit station, by the way, so there's a lot of people around, in case you're wondering.

Like you, I didn't make any racial conclusions, I just thought it was kinda funny. There's no real point to this post, just felt like sharing. :P

Most of you conservative's want illegals here. But for 1 reason only. Cheap labor done by people who won't stand up for their rights. A lot of hispanic people say they will take a job that an american won't do. Well that sounds nice and everything, but most americans can't live on $5 and hour. Why? Because americans don't live like most working class spanish do. Most of them make it on very little pay by living sometimes up to 15 ADULTS to a house. So if every working adult is bringing in $5 an hour that is now $75 an hour. Most Americans in general don't live like this. Most of us live 2 adults and children so each person has to make more since there are only 2 working adults. I say to corporate sellouts pay an american wage and americans will be happy to fill those jobs. With all of these people coming here by the millions. Changing black and white american culture to the USM?

Illegals have to take the 5 dollar an hour job because they're stupid. They like the abuse as long as they have a roof and food. I'll say this (again) about TFan:
I don't always agree with what he has to say...in fact, often I disagree. But then again I haven't lived his life or gotten his perspective first hand. As he's pointed out, many if not practically all of my face-to-face encounters with hispanics have been with working-class folks. An impartial social scientist would conclude that the majority of these people are docile, work hard rather than smart, and have little ambition other than to keep their noses to the grindstone all their lives.
TFan to me represents a valuable alternative opinion. What I sometimes feel he could use a bit more of is a sense of humility or mercy towards the simpler folks. (You'll forgive me if I misinterpret, TFan.) I'm convinced that while it's technically possible to educate oneself or otherwise lift oneself up out of the 'rabble', there's a reason many never will. Call it spirit, inspiration, strength of character, good parenting or mentoring, one inspiring teacher, or what you will. But in all times, in all places, and within all cultures there are the aristocrats, the middle class, and the common folk. Are the commoners to be pitied, despised, helped, ignored, humiliated, annihilated or....?
I think about the poor at some point every day. Do I pretend they don't exist? Or do I give away all my possessions and become like Mother Teresa? Obviously, neither extreme is going to happen, at least not in this kid's case.
There's two kinds of activism, regardless of the 'cause.' The kind that makes the papers and the small everyday personal gesture. And they're both important. I've been led down some pretty cool roads because of a book or something someone suggested. And it's no trouble to make it a daily habit to be courteous to strangers that you meet.
At the very least you might help someone's mood that's having a crappy day. And you might just provide someone with a spark that desperately needs it. Someone recommended the book Rich Dad Poor Dad to me several years ago. I was able to see clearly for the first time the way my parents make fundamental mistakes in the way they deal with their money. And I've changed the way I think about it as well - all because someone casually suggested a book years ago.
I guess I'm a proponent of the variation of the idea of teaching a man to fish versus giving him a fish. My variation is "I don't have time to teach everyone to fish...but I can suggest a good fishing hole, and it's up to them to listen." But just saying 'fuck 'em' to me is morally wrong. And unnecessary.
