Gay leather park planned for San Francisco
New proposals pay homage to area's cultural ties to LGBTI and leather communities
16 February 2015
A 'gay leather' park is being planned for San Francisco.
The new mixed-use housing and retail development could be gracing the streets to pay homage to the area’s historic ties to both the LGBTI and leather communities.
The developed public space, currently taken up by a car park, would be transformed into a leather-themed pedestrian plaza under the new proposals.
'I am super excited about it. I think it is beautiful,' said one supporter of the proposals, as quoted by the Bay Area Reporter (http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=70382).
Eagle Plaza, as is it would be called, would fall within an area already designated by the city as an LGBTI cultural heritage district.
The neighbourhood has, since the 1950s, been home to gay bars and nightclubs, many of which catered to the leather scene.
The parklet has been designed with furnishings of blue, black, white and red - the colors of the leather flag.
