Since the 1970's he has worked to try to encourage more medical research into the use of psychedelics and marijuana in the treatment of alcoholism and psychiatric illness.
This is an area of medical research that has 'stalled' since the 70's due to restrictive laws making it very difficult to conduct research in this field. Bright young scientists shied away because it was considered 'career suicide' , given the restrictive laws and political attitudes.
However , all that is changing now. Pity "Sacha" Alexander Shulgin couldn't be around a bit longer.
He was 88.RIP

It is a shame that research on possibly therapeutic effects of these drugs has stalled. When I've smoked pot it was a very enjoyable experience, but I would not be able to function while using it. I remember not being able to follow conversations....etc. Of course, not everyone responds the same way to substances. If there were a study on the therapeutic effects of lsd I'd read it. If it showed promise in the treatment of depression and anxiety, had few side effects, and the potential for long-term efficacy, I'd drop some acid:). At this point though, I'd be a little afraid to.

Actually, I see you said psychedelics....acid being only one option. I'm a little bit drunk now. Alcohol. Now there's a substance that's a depressant, can cause lethal withdrawal, and is neurotoxic! And legal.
