Leonardo da Vinci died in France at the age of 67, leaving behind some of the most sublime paintings committed to canvas, and a diverse range of inventions and scientific ideas that took centuries to become reality. He was possibly the first person to design ocean going vessels with a double hull; he designed a diving suit which also had goggles and breathing apparatus; one of his concepts -the ball-bearing has been a fundamental component of machines with moving parts, and he may have been the first person to design what we now know as a helicopter. By any measure of human achievement, Leonardo was, and remains an extraordinary figure.
