Actually it occurred on the 20th of April 1914. Today is the 24th.

Yesterday -April 23rd- is traditionally recognised as the Birthday of William Shakespeare, the argument being that a birth was registered three days after the event, hence the parish record which dates it probably to the 23rd; it was also St George's Day, patron saint of the English even though George never made it to this sceptered isle. And today, 24th April, is a day of remembrance for Armenians although the genocidal slaughter that took place in Anatolia can be dated across several decades before its grisly climax in 1915.

But thanks for the reference, as I had not heard of the Ludlow incident before, and it bears no relation to Comus, a Masque given before Ludlow Castle (John Milton, 1634).

LOL... ONLY Stavros!!! "But thanks for the reference, as I had not heard of the Ludlow incident before, and it bears no relation to Comus, a Masque given before Ludlow Castle (John Milton, 1634)." (We had to study Comus at school. it was dull)

Not exactly Prospero is it, Prospero...?

Now to my charms,
And to my wily trains, I shall e're long
Be well stock't with as fair a herd as graz'd
About my Mother Circe. Thus I hurl
My dazling Spells into the spungy ayr,
Of power to cheat the eye with blear illusion,
And give it false presentments, lest the place
And my quaint habits breed astonishment,
And put the Damsel to suspicious flight,
Which must not be, for that's against my course...

And yet it is from Milton that we have:

'trip the light fantastic' (actually: 'trip it as ye go, on the light fantastic toe...'
Pandemonium
All hell breaks loose
Impassive, jubilant, obtrusive, loquacious, unconvincing,
Satanic
persona, fragrance, beleagured, sensuous, undesirable, disregard,
damp, criticise, irresponsible,
lovelorn, exhilarating, sectarian, unaccountable, incidental, and
cooking
yes, cooking.

Rest in peace, great heroes and patriots. You fought bravely against the brutal tyranny of the government, the police state and the corporate 1%.

And may Unions thrive again. (Note: it was the Colorado State Militia that partook in the slaughter and the Federal Government that intervened).

"Colorado State Militia" aka Colorado National Guard.

Thanks for the thread, Trish. It was states that had laws enforcing segregation, by race, and the national government that took powers to end it. Thanks to the Federal government, I, and any of my relatives can not be denied admittance to any school because of my race. And I can drink at any public water fountain, and use any public restroom . I was 15, when these rights were granted. It was the state national guard of Arkansas that deployed to keep Blacks out of Little Rock High School, and federal troops who were moved in to admit 9 Black students.

As for the subject of labor unions they greatly helped to bring prosperity to the average person. And this in turn fueled us to a great world economy. Certain conservatives claim that the marketplace will take care of anything. They are ignoring history. I can see why such events as the Ludlow Massacre is an important subject to be taught to our youth.

No problem Prospero. These boards are for all the members. And thank you yodajazz. That's precisely why I posted this thread. It seemed the right time for a reminder that ours is a government of, by and for the people.
