CNN to pull plug on Piers Morgan show

Washington (AFP) - CNN president Jeff Zucker has decided to end television host Piers Morgan's show after its ratings plunged, sources at the television network said.
The former British tabloid editor -- who irked conservative Americans after launching somewhat of a crusade for greater gun control measures -- struggled after stepping into the shoes of popular, down-to-earth host Larry King in the coveted 9:00 pm primetime slot.
King, an 80-year-old talk show star who now hosts a show broadcasting on Hulu, Ora TV and Russia's RT television, is known for his ability to connect immediately and easily with ordinary Americans. He hosted "Larry King Live" on CNN from 1985 to 2010, wearing his trademark wide-rimmed glasses, shirt with rolled-up sleeves and suspenders.
Morgan, in contrast, was inherently British and not just in his accent. In particular, he made repeated references to cricket, a sport with little US presence, and professed his ignorance about American football and preference for the round football, soccer.
"CNN confirms that 'Piers Morgan Live' is ending," CNN vice president of communications Barbara Levin told AFP. "The date of the final program is still to be determined."
US media reports said the show could end as early as next month but that Morgan may stay with CNN in another role.
In an interview with The New York Times, Morgan said the show had "run its course," adding that he and Zucker "have been talking for some time about different ways of using me."
He also acknowledged the show was underperforming.
"It's been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings," Morgan said, adding that the show suffered especially on slow news days.
"Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it," he added.http://citizen.co.za/wp-content/uploads/afp/2013/12/29/c9c44d6e1c86a6037583d82856e3c3b5da86a9d6.jpg

Can't understand why it took so long although anything that keeps him from the

Please, please, please, don't send him back to the UK.

On the other hand, maybe he'll end up in jail for his part in the phone-hacking scandal, maybe sharing a cell with Andy Coulson. Now that's a result!

Maybe he could get a network show on Afghan TV ?

Depending on what emerges from the trial of Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, Piers Morgan, who has been interviewed by the police 'under caution' could in theory be arrested. I suspect they want to see if Brooks and Coulson are found guilty. Last week we had to endure Brooks's sob story about what a hard life she has had being a woman in a man's world. Maybe this week the defence will actually address the real issues, and she will answer questions, under cross-examination, about phone hacking across Fleet St, including the Mirror when Morgan was editor.

Shame as he was one of the few who would relentlessly take the gun nuts to task - and it's probably them who got him forced out.

You are totally right steven... but sadly that was his only virtue.

And don't you think it was probably his dodgy association with phonetapping that made CNN decide to give him the big heave-ho?

maybe he could get a job working with Kim Jong un .. hear he likes to tap phones and spy on people etc :)

Personally think piers morgan is a prize bell end . Though some of his antics have been amusing to watch ..

Said it before, I'm one of the few Brits who mainly likes him. Great interviewer for GQ for years, great interviewer on TV. I don't think CNN give a shit about phone tapping, it's all to do with the US gun lobby and of course, ratings dropping because of his stance on this.

Don't know about the situation in the US, but picture quality of CNN sat transmissions is absolutely horrible compared to other stations here in Europe.
They always were way behind any other station here, but with HD really taking off now, it is becoming even harder to digest their offerings.

So, who wants to watch Piers Morgan anyway?

Prospero
02-24-2014, 09:55 PM
If as steven says and the news now seems to suggest it was his stand against the gun lobby that got him fired (excuse the pun) then this is a cowardly and disgusting act by CNN. I would suggest people boycott a station that is cowed by the gun lobby. Disgusting.

Boycott CNN? I think that's already occurring.

January 2014 was not a month to remember for CNN.
The network is in rebuilding mode, trying to push away (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/03/jeff-zucker-cnn-changes-2014_n_4376858.html) from its traditional reliance on breaking news. So it's perhaps not surprising that its ratings are not at their most robust. Even so, the numbers are stinging: as the Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-ratings-cnns-entire-lineup-674873?) and TVNewser noted (http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/january-2014-ratings-cnn-loses-a-quarter-of-its-audience_b211593), it was CNN's third-worst ratings month in its history. CNN lost 39% of its total primetime audience from the same month in 2013, and 35% of its primetime audience in the coveted A25-54 demo.
Arch-rival MSNBC also saw its ratings fall from 2013, but not nearly as much as CNN did. (It dropped just 2% in the primetime demo, for instance.) It landed in second place in all categories in both total day and primetime. Fox News, meanwhile, saw its ratings grow from January 2013, though they fell by 1% in the primetime demo category. As ever, it retained its comfortable first place lead.
One big winner for the month: Chris Matthews, whose move to 7 PM netted him his best-ever ratings in the demo.

The gun lobby didn't, and probably couldn't, get him fired. He had poor ratings. It's as simple as that.

You can prance around stage with a foam finger and pretend to have sex with a teddy bear. If people watch it, then you get ratings, and that's all that matters.

I'm not familiar with much of his work, started watching him during the George Zimmerman trial.

He may have been a good interviewer on other subjects, but on gun control, he was awful. It wasn't a discussion. Emotions took over and his interviews were just rants.

And the resume highlight that earned Morgan this CNN prime time job.........wait for it............He was a judge on the British version of American Idol. No wonder CNN's ratings are heading down the toilet.

Success seems so random in opinion news. I wonder if people didn't like watching Piers because they thought as a British expatriate he was an outsider...this only added to the gun culture clash.

CNN has trouble getting ratings to begin with, and the only reason Larry King lasted so long is because people were comfortable with what they were going to get with him: boring interviews of famous people.

I hardly watch opinion news because I find it easier and more convenient to get it in print form, but he seemed a lot more useful than the guys on Fox and MSNBC. But that's not really the barometer of success on these cult of personality type shows.

This thread is a brutal burial and pissing on a grave. Morgan's problem with me is he came off as a condescending unlikeable prick way even before the CNN show. He never gave me a reason to show any positive interest. He failed. No heart strings to pull or boogeymen to point at. Boo-Hoo-Freaking-Hoo and nuts to that noise while yer at it.

MSNBC has Al Sharpton so they hire bigots too. Even more opportunity for Morgan to be ignored.

Fox News was mentioned. The guy who needs to be fired is Greg Gutfeld. He's the most unfunny guy ever. He gives people nervous diarrhea with his elaborate joke set-ups that usually bomb then scans the table with his bulging eyes encouraging the panel to sell for him. He has his job because he's safe and controllable.

Norm MacDonald is a funny guy but he ended up being locked out of the building.

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_me9vrbqRXS1qkpz9f.gif

Norm here is funnier talking about being fired than Gutfeld is while he's being presently employed. Letterman was great setting him up too.
